For a mother who has spent her entire life loving and raising her child, being beaten and mercilessly thrown out onto the streets by her own son is too heartbreaking to overcome. But this is a common story among the elderly residents of the Guru Vishram Vridh Ashram. “I’ve seen mothers in old and torn clothes, their bodies smelling and their hands and feet rotting and covered in maggots,” shares Dr. G.P. Bhagat, founder of the ashram. These abandoned elderly men and women lay starving on the streets hoping for someone to rescue them from their suffering. “What will happen to them after me? I am 80+. I spend sleepless nights,” worries ex-Air Force officer, Group Captain AC Barua while talking about the future of the 28 destitute women under his care. “They have nobody in this world, sometimes they don’t remember their own names. They are absolutely alone,” he informs us as he goes from one room to the other meeting all the women who live at Seneh, the only home where they are loved and taken care of. After fighting for his country all his life, this octogenarian is now fighting to rescue homeless and abandoned women from dying on the streets. But he cannot do it alone. “Everyday I keep on getting calls from here and there. ‘Oh! there’s a woman lying here. Can you help?’ But I don’t dare to go and help because I don’t have the money. I don’t have the resources, our resources are very limited,” explains Gr. Capt. Many times these are women with mental health conditions and considered being a witch due to superstitious beliefs and beaten up as a result. They are victims of domestic abuse or widow mothers who are considered to be a burden on the family. Group Captain Barua has not only rescued them from critical conditions, he has provided them with urgent medical care, food and above all, a free safe shelter where they can live with love and care. Among these residents is Sarala Kalita who fled to save herself from the tortures of her alcoholic husband only to face neglect and trauma from her brothers- and sisters-in-law. “Both my brothers and their wives urged my father to leave me somewhere as they didn’t want to take care of me anymore. One day my brother’s wife didn’t even let me have food at home. She just wanted me to leave and go away. So that’s why, my father got in touch with Seneh through someone, and handed me over to Sir to take care of me,” says Sarita who has found joy in living at Seneh. “Coming to Seneh, it felt like I got a new life altogether. Sir has given me a harmonium. I love singing. It makes me forget everything and takes me to someplace else entirely,” she adds. More women like Sarala can find their way to a loving home like Seneh. All they need is a little bit of your kindness. “It is difficult to make both ends meet”To sustain their daily expenditure, Capt Barua needs approx ₹3 lakh a month and arranging the funds is a mammoth challenge for the NGO. “Our expenses are growing day by day. Residents are growing older, their sicknesses are increasing. At times we have to give them special food. They require more care so we have to get more employees. About half of them require leading around, 1-2 has to be fed also. India is reporting more than 1,20,000 new leprosy cases every year. Leprosy causes nerve damage to the persons affected, which leads to deformities and disabilities. Around 5% of the persons affected by leprosy are living with deformities in India. Leprosy is completely curable disease but one of the challenges faced by person affected by leprosy is stigma and discrimination due to deformities. Damien Foundation India Trust has been working for leprosy control in India since 1955. It has health facilities in 8 states for medical and social rehabilitation of persons affected by leprosy. Leprosy deformities can be corrected through specialized surgical procedures and reformed through intensive physiotherapy. Under this condition, people affected by leprosy with deformities will be assessed by a trained doctor and surgical correction will be done at leprosy referral hospitals. Patients need to be hospitalized for a period of 8 to 9 weeks. The poor leprosy deformity corrected persons, along with medical rehabilitation, are also economically rehabilitated by initiating them into a business of their choice. This enables them to financially support themselves as well as their dependents in their family. 
 Damien Foundation India Trust is working in 52 districts across 8 states in India. Nearly 23000 persons affected by leprosy with disabilities are supported through training on self care. Damien Foundation has identified more than 1200 persons with deformities who are waiting for surgical correction. Every year, Damien Foundation is able to carry out deformity correction surgery for around 400 persons.We strive to enable persons affected by leprosy with disabilities to earn their livelihoo,d promote their quality of living, educate children of the affected through medical and social rehabilitation. We also facilitate them to avail various government schemes. 
 Damien Foundation’s objective is to alleviate poverty, reducing stigma and discrimination and mainstreaming of persons affected by leprosy with deformities. Damien Foundation also aims at preventing the leprosy-affected from begging on streets and help them in leading a dignified life thorough its socio-economic rehabilitation support.Damien Foundation has rehabilitated more than 10000 leprosy deformed persons, both medically and socially since 1955. Also, it has identified surgeons in different locations and trained them in leprosy deformity correction surgery for sustainable medical rehabilitation.

Disability Correction through Reconstructive Surgeries 

Patients with drug-sensitive TB require 6-8 months of treatment with less toxic drugs. Studies have shown that patients with drug-sensitive TB face self-stigma within their family, neighborhood, and also in workplaces. Besides this, they face catastrophic health expenditures, loss of productive man-days, and they are further pushed into poverty. When a woman suffers from TB, the household loses the activities that the woman routinely performs. In some societies, TB patients are seen as damaged for life or unmarriageable, such discrimination may result in anxiety, depression, and reduction in the quality of life. The disease is most prevalent in the age group of 15 to 54 years, which is the highly economically productive period of an individual's life with important consequences for the household when the individual falls sick with TB.	A person who is diagnosed with MDR TB needs to undergo MDR TB treatment for 2 years. In this scenario, it is foreseen that the worst socioeconomic consequences among MDR TB patients, which cause enormous social and economic disruption and hampers the nation's health and development. Nearly 0.4 million are dying due to TB annually which translates to two deaths every three minutes.   
 	Damien Foundation will provide nutritional support to poor persons affected by TB who has lost his/her their job/man-days and livelihood due to TB and thereby support will be provided until he/she is recovered and able to go for work and sustain his/ her livelihood. Further, this will be like an incentive and will help in TB treatment adherence and completion. 
 The nutritional support during the course of treatment will help the poor TB patient to adhere to the TB treatment completion and support regular follow-up during the visit to the TB clinics. Secondly, the family will also take good care of TB patients as they are not a burden to the family besides they have lost their job or wages due to TB because support is received in the form of Nutritional support.
