We are a registered Section-8, the not-for-profit organization currently working in the Delhi-NCR region. Thematic Areas of Work: We work with families, caregivers, and local institutions, to co-create interventions that’ll enable parents to prioritize the need to care for their children &amp; their own well-being. We believe, the first 6 years of a child are crucial for the development of the brain, and lack of stimulative care and opportunities for play, in that period can severely impair their learning ability for as long as they live. So we conduct sessions with caregivers, school students, adolescents, and parents to spread awareness about Early Childhood Care and Education and upskill them to cater to a child’s developmental needs through Play activities. Our recent activities include working with children, and parents in and around Gautam-Nagar, Hauz-Khas Village, Begam-pur and Malviya Nagar in New Delhi.We spread awareness of the Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) and the consequences on their children’s growth to the parents of infants (~first 2000 days);- We enhance knowledge on children’s rights about various government schemes/ institutions that support the new parents as part of their objectives covered under the Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS) Scheme of the Ministry of Women and Child Development, Government of India (MWCD); and Right to Education (RTE);- We equip the new parents through awareness of feelings and needs for self-care and their well-being and empower them to communicate non-violently so that they can resolve conflicts and create safe spaces for dialogue within the family and with the outside world;- We support them to build a community of practice for parents who would support each other in creating stimulating experiences for future parents and also for future generations;- We train and encourage parents and all other stakeholders to use play methods or techniques to regulate and build routines to support the learning of children;Simply put we focus on providing Early Childhood care and Education to parents because each child deserves to be fearless and get a conducive atmosphere to thrive to their inherent potential.

Concern:This is a graph of human brain development over time, the most dramatic growth occurs before age 3 and goes on till age 6 when 90% of the brain is formed and the relationship of public spending on early childhood education is nearly inverse with less than 4% of funds invested by Age 3.Research shows that brain development is cumulative so the early years lay the foundation for future learning, and new studies at Harvard University show that genes implicated in learning are actually turned on or off based on a child's earliest experiences and yet there is an education void during the most formative time in a person's life because of numerous other reasons.One of the most important bridge between the child and their learning are parents and caregivers and we (Dawn Child Foundation) focus on how the ‘parents’ and ‘caregivers’ can address this education void during their child's most critical years.Scenario: ‘A mother is excited to give baby the best education from birth when the child arrives but then reality checks in and choices between diapers and feedings and sleep deprivation and work demands kick in and then the guilt makes the mother think that she couldn't keep up with her child’s developmental needs and feels like she is failing the child.’ Relatable, isn’t it?The reality is that parents who are by default the baby's first teachers are sorely under-supported to do that job, so they either leave their job or the baby is left alone. As per WHO - ‘Child maltreatment is the abuse and neglect that occurs to children under 18 years of age. It includes all types of physical and/ or emotional ill-treatment, sexual abuse, neglect, negligence and commercial or other exploitation, which results in actual or potential harm to the child’s health, survival, development or dignity in the context of a relationship of responsibility, trust or power. 
 What we do:We devote ourselves to empowering new parents in their role as educators because as a society we haven't been talking about education for babies assuming it might steal away from the ease and joy of babyhood. There’s already enough focus on health and nutrition but our focus is on ‘education’.The toy industry advertising has coloured our ideas of what babies should be learning, as decades ago marketers at some of the biggest toy companies added letters and numbers to baby toys against the advice of their learning experts simply because it sold more products.We are clear that education from birth to six is not about racing to academics like reading and maths and now is the time to draw from a compelling body of research and proven practices from infant and toddler classrooms to define what education for babies looks like. Beyond offering loving connection and responsive caregiving the most effective thing we can do for your baby's education is to thoughtfully prepare their environment.Babies are learning ‘how to learn’ so we make the most impact by helping them develop healthy learning habits such as concentration and focus, perseverance and problem solving, creativity and the love of learning. These habits are early building blocks in a set of skills, researchers call ‘Executive Function’. Executive function is what allows us to meet goals while managing our thoughts, emotions and behaviour. It is a better predictor of academic success than IQ and a predictor of long-term income, well-being and overall health.Preparing a learning environment for our baby at home, one that is beautiful, inviting and rich with experiences, does not have to be complicated. It starts with a low shelf and a few toys, in fact more toys do not equal more learning. Just like an adult who finds it hard to focus on work when their office and desk are a mess, a child feels overwhelmed by an overflowing play area. Research shows that adults function better in orderly environments and the same applies to children and we want to support how parents and caregivers can address this education void during their child's most critical years. 
 Actions (examples):We realised that the best way to encourage healthy and creative choices for parents is to support them build their environment beyond toys.  We can create numerous options for babies to exercise executive function skills like setting up a water pitcher (ghada) where a newly walking child can get a drink when they're thirsty, this not only allows them to practice their motor skills and independence it also allows them to build up their planning goal-setting skills and their self-control. Key elements in the development of executive function we can build similar skills by hanging low hooks for their clothes, caps, and providing a mirror at eye level so they can actively participate in dressing and caring for themselves.Observing the child in their environment allows us to present the appropriate level of challenge to stretch their skills, not so little that they are bored and not so much that they give up.  Research shows children thrive in this zone.  Teachers know that setting children up at this optimal level of challenge and offering help only when needed cultivates perseverance and problem-solving.  For example: when a baby is trying to grasp a ball that is just out of reach they are building both their gross motor skills and their perseverance. They might make noises similar to how adults sound when lifting heavy weights at the gym just as we would never take weights away from someone who was working hard to lift them unless they really needed help. We don't want to steal growth opportunities away from our child after we've prepared the environment.This is an example, an important one to view it not as our masterpiece but as a work in progress.  Observing our child closely will help us see when the environment must be adapted to meet their changing needs. The only way we can observe clearly is if we are approaching our child with curiosity rather than expectations which brings to the most important elements of a child's environment their caregivers. The most influential form of education is ‘modelling’ from adults.We need to show our babies what it means to be human.  If we want them to love learning, we can model our excitement to explore and discover with them.  If we want them to be confident, we can model by accepting ourselves, our mistakes, flaws and all the countless sacrifices we make for our children, but perhaps what they need even more is to see us being kind to ourselves so they grow up with permission to do the same.If we thoughtfully prepare these types of learning environments for babies, it will allow them not only to maximise their potential from birth to six but to expand their potential for the future.Personally we can't wait to see what the next generation will do with that potential.
