The extent of the struggles here was beyond my imagination. These villages had no connectivity to the outside world, and very limited access to healthcare and quality education”, says Bipin Dhane, founder of the school. Bipin, who grew up in the small town of Satara in Maharashtra, faced countless financial hardships. Despite his struggles, Bipin secured admission to the prestigious Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur, and then went on to take up a job in Singapore. Owing to his childhood experiences Bipin was always inclined towards helping the less fortunate, and he believed in the transformative power of education. It was in 2016 that Bipin left his lucrative career abroad and moved to Majuli, to provide the children from this inaccessible river island education they were deprived of.“Whatever little money I had saved, I gave it to my parents. I had no money to start the school. It was then that villagers came together to build bamboo huts. Each family donated bamboo, wood, and whatever little they could. Deepalaya is an ISO 9001:2015 certified non - government organisation that was started on July 16th 1979 by seven founding members with the aim of fostering self-reliance and helping underprivileged children rise above their societal limitations.We have been active in Delhi, Haryana, U.P. Uttarakhand, Maharashtra, Telangana, Kerala, Punjab and Andhra Pradesh. For the last 44 years, we have interacted with several community members. Through these interactions, we have found that it’s not only illiteracy, but several other related factors such as – discrimination towards the girl child, marginalization of the differently abled, oppression of women and lack of basic healthcare, that contributed towards the stagnation of a child’s overall development.To combat these emerging social issues we decided to diversify our involvement and address each factor with a separate programme. In short, our focus shifted from educating only the child to ensuring that the entire family becomes self reliant.Over the years, we have established several projects in the areas of Education (Formal/Non-Formal/Remedial), Women Empowerment (reproductive health, SHG, Micro-finance), Institutional care, Community health, Vocational training and Differently Abled.Till date, Deepalaya has reached out to more than 3,71,556 children, given vocational training to 23,545 adults and helped form more than 1616 Self Help Groups with 17892 women, supported 4766 differently abled children with community-based rehabilitation, served 1812 through the institutional-care programme and helped 13,68,192 through healthcare activities.

12-year old Reena suffers from speech and hearing impairment. After having been identified during one of our surveys in 2002, Reena joined Deepalaya. She was given a hearing aid and regular speech therapy sessions at the centre and her communication skills improved dramatically. When we felt that she was ready, we enrolled her into a formal government school.

 Sports are also strongly encouraged at Deepalaya. Having noticed that Reena took a keen interest in skating, Deepalaya decided to coach her. Not only has she won several medals at inter-school and national level but Reena was also selected for the World Winter Games 2009 in Idaho, USA for Alpine Skating. Her world-class skating abilities won her a bronze medal and proves that no impairment should ever discourage a child from being who they want to be.

It is now or never! Covid is once again creating panic all over India. 3,915 people died of COVID in India in the last 24 hours, the highest in a day since the beginning of this pandemic. With over 4.14 lakh new COVID cases in a single day, India's total number of COVID cases is 2.14 crore which is a huge burden on our healthcare system. As India is gasping for breath, our frontline workers are tirelessly working to rein this monstrous pandemic. India needs all of us in this battle against COVID-19.We cannot forget that along with Healthcare we also need to feed the hungry during these trying times. Deepalaya fed more than 22000 families by providing dry ration and essentials last year during the lockdown and provided a financial aid of Rs.7000 to more than 2500 families through Mission Salamati. Lockdown 2021 demands another Mission Salamati. Our beneficiaries are already raising concerns about food security during this regional lockdown in Delhi.  
 We wish to reach out another 22000 families and provide them with dry ration, sanitisation and immunity kits. One kit shall comprise essential items like Ata, Pulses (3 types), Rice, Oil, salt, Spices, tea, Masks, Surf, Soap, sanitary napkins &amp; Immunity kit

Deepalaya's Mission -- Food and sanitisation Kits for the needy

Center for Monitoring Indian Economy recently released the latest data for unemployment in both urban and rural areas. The figures present an alarming situation. The data shows that the unemployment rate has increased to 8.59 % and 10.69% in rural and urban areas respectively as on June 28. According to the International Labour Organisation, more than 90% of India's workforce is employed in the informal sector. Majority of these are daily wage workers having their source of income from various industries, construction sector etc. With the country wide lockdown, the worst affected in this Corona virus crisis are these daily wagers and labourers. The curfew has robbed them of their daily income. Millions of workers have migrated back to their hometowns. The halt in industrial activity has rendered them helpless. Moody’s, the world renowned rating agency, has estimated that corona pandemic will reduce the country’s growth rate to around 2.5 per cent. Considering the sudden slowdown, it may be difficult for all of them to find jobs 
  We plan to conduct short-term training with a view to provide livelihood opportunities to 150 people (one member from one family) so that they are self-reliant. These training opportunities will last 15 to 20 days with a view to support them in opening their micro-enterprises. After completion of training period, the project also intends to support them with a nominal working capital ranging from Rs. 10000 to Rs. 15000 (depending upon the enterprise) to start the work. In case, they need more funds to start, then these people will be linked to banks for credit linkages for sustaining their businesses. These enterprises shall be able to meet the local requirements and also bridge gap between demand and supply. The enterprises will also be linked with existing/new government schemes floated by the government for rehabilitation of those who have been rendered unemployed due to after affects of Covid-19. The project shall be implemented after the lockdown is called off. These people will be equipped with establishing micro-enterprises in the following areas:<ol><li>Mask making</li><li>Hand sanitizer making</li><li>Hand-made soaps</li><li>Online food delivery system &amp; maintaining hygiene</li><li>Subzi online – app for vegetable vendors</li><li>Bank-mitra training - Govt. banks, Private Banks, Money transfer, Common-service-centre, Ration Card Application, Form filling assistance, Govt. schemes, forms, documentation and KYC, Cash dispensing, Chalta-Firta Bank, Phone recharge etc.</li><li>Helpdesk for government schemes</li><li>Cloth Bags</li><li>Bio- Sand water filter for clean water</li><li>Home decor through old jeans &amp; cotton clothes</li><li>Mobile-cover making</li></ol>They would be first evaluated for their existing skills and skills gaps would be identified. Then skill up gradation and soft skill training would be provided. People will also be trained on obtaining necessary licenses/registrations for starting their micro-enterprises 
 After project completion, the project shall be able to achieve the following impact<ol><li>150 people trained on different skills</li><li>150 people supported with seed money</li><li>150 people availing government schemes</li><li>150 people linked with banks/financial institutions for credit linkages</li><li>100 to 150. of enterprises established</li><li>Average monthly revenue of Rs. 10000 to Rs. 15000</li></ol>

Mission Salamati - Promoting livelihood among COVID-hit families

As per the Census 2011, 26.8 million people are differently-abled in India. Despite the legal rights and regulations, People with Disability are still facing inclusion challenges in society.  
 Under Project Sambhav, we have special educators, speech therapists, and counselors who develop individualized special education plans for differently-abled children as per their needs and requirements. Apart from this, we are using ‘Triangulation Inter-relation’ between children, parents, and teachers that would support these children and lead them to mainstream educational institutions. 
 Through this project, Deepalaya has impacted 4,211 lives from 1995. In this project, 120 differently-abled children will be supported to complete their education with adequate resources and mainstream them into regular schools.

Enabling a Differently-abled

India is a signatory to the World Health Organization resolution on ‘Vision 2020: The right to sight’. Blindness due to cataract presents an enormous problem in India not only in terms of human morbidity but also in terms of economic loss and social burden. The WHO/NPCB (National Programme for Control of Blindness) survey has shown that there is a backlog of over 22 million blind eyes (12 million blind people) in India, and 80.1% of these are blindness is caused due to cataract. The annual incidence of cataract blindness is about 3.8 million. Over the years of Deepalaya’s intervention we have closely worked with and identified the need for making an intervention in the field cataract surgeries especially for age group of 60+. But for Deepalaya's intervention these people will be devoid of health facilities. 
 The foremost thrust of Deepalaya’s effort is to build a community that is aware of health, especially eye care and conscious in catering to the ‘health’ needs of the community. For this purpose, Deepalaya has been putting the focus on establishing a trust relationship between the members of the Health team and community.This relationship is responsible for the patients’ returning for follow-ups and referring others in the community to avail the services offered by Deepalaya.Deepalaya undertakes camps once in a month at Deepalaya Sanjay Colony, Okhla Phase-II, New Delhi. Apart from promoting and sensitizing the community of eye care, the team provides treatment to ailing eye patients and prepares the cases for cataract surgery with the help of Rajendra Prasad Eye Centre, AIIMS. The camp has a team of doctors with experience in ophthalmology, an optometrist, and a team of workers/volunteers to help in identifying the patients, record data, motivate and sensitize the patients. After identification, cataract surgeries are undertaken with the help of experienced panel of surgeons at AIIMS. Post operation services are provided until the patient retrieves the desired level of sight. 
 With the help of our partnership with AIIMS, people from underprivileged background are able to afford cataract surgeries without any cost.
