For a mother who has spent her entire life loving and raising her child, being beaten and mercilessly thrown out onto the streets by her own son is too heartbreaking to overcome. But this is a common story among the elderly residents of the Guru Vishram Vridh Ashram. “I’ve seen mothers in old and torn clothes, their bodies smelling and their hands and feet rotting and covered in maggots,” shares Dr. G.P. Blindness continues to be one of the major public health problems in our country. Cataract and corneal diseases are major causes of blindness in countries with less-developed economies. According to the WHO, corneal diseases are among the major causes of vision loss and blindness in the world today, after cataract and glaucoma. In India, it is estimated that there are approximately 6.8 million people who have vision less than 6/60 in at least one eye due to corneal diseases; of these, about a million have bilateral involvement. It is expected that the number of individuals with unilateral corneal blindness in India will increase to 10.6 million by 2020. 
 We are creating awareness amongst the masses and trying to make eye donation a family tradition. For this, we target youth which will help to make three generations aware about eye donation. Along with awareness, we are also establishing a series of eye banks and transplantation centers where no eye donation or transplantation facility is presently available. These eye banks will provide round-the-clock eye donation facility which will ensure increase in the number of eye donations. To ease the eye donation process, we are connecting specialty and super specialty hospitals with our eye bank network so that we can reach the deceased family for counseling and complete the eye donation procedure in the hospital only. We are conducting regular eye checkup and screening camps to identify corneal blinds so that their names can be enrolled in the recipient waiting list. All these efforts are undertaken to ensure efficiency and transparency in eye donation and distribution system. 
 Due to local availibility of round-the-clock eye donation facility, number of eye donation will increase. Because of less distance between eye bank and place of eye donation, this would become a common practice. Corneal blinds can easily register their name in the waiting list of eye bank or transplantation centre as it is locally available. We are also going to collabrate with hospitals for cornea retrival program which will help us to get in touch with the familes of deseased people in the hospital and even enucleation process can be done in the hospital

The COVID-19 pandemic has brought to the forefront the risk of major disease outbreaks and highlighted countries’ lack of preparedness to fight them. Pandemics are large disease outbreaks that affect several countries and pose major health, social, and economic risks. A quick-moving pathogen spreading across the globe has the potential to kill tens of millions of people, disrupt economies, and destabilize national security – just as COVID-19 has demonstrated. 
 COVID-19 has unleashed a worldwide shock wave with severe health, economic and social consequences which will affect many countries for years to come. Pandemic preparedness and disease surveillance anchored in strong health systems that reach all people—especially the most vulnerable—are crucial to ensure better protection from major disease outbreaks.  Under the Roshni Zindagi Mein Campaign, we conduct eye donation awareness campaign in school and colleges across the state. We are trying to spread awareness about the virtue of donating eyes via public programs and special events like festivals, jatras, yatras, kumbh mela, etc across Maharashtra. Also, we are sensitizing people in hospitals and connecting them with the eye banks of respective district. 
 The rationale behind this campaign is to bring efficiency and transparency in eye donation and distribution system. Once people realize the importance of eye donation, it will become a mass movement. This will help India tackle the problem of corneal blindness. Due to local availability of round-the-clock eye donation facility, number of eye donation will increase. By connecting the hospital and clinics to the eye banks of respective district, eye bank team will get easily connected with the family of deceased and even enucleation process will be done in the hospital.

Roshni Zindagi Mein: Help spread awareness about the benefits of eye donation

According to the NPCB estimates, there are currently 200,000 corneal blind persons in the country and it is estimated that there is an addition of 25000 - 30000 corneal blindness cases every year in the country. 
 Taking the importance of eye donation into consideration, the DEESHA Group has started working for eye donation awareness in 2005. Considering the need to strengthen the eye banking infrastructure and make eye donation hassle-free for the family, Deesha International Eye Banks has been established in Amravati, Yavatmal, Washim and Buldhana Districts. The foundation wishes to make the eye banking infrastructure in line with the best practices across the globe. The foundation needs an "Eye Banking Specular Microscope" which will help us to increase tissue utilization rate, i.e., more number donated eyes will be utilized for transplantation to the corneal blinds. 
 The microscope will help us to evaluate the cells of donated corneas and accordingly it can be transplanted to multiple people with negligible wastage of donated eyes.
