For a mother who has spent her entire life loving and raising her child, being beaten and mercilessly thrown out onto the streets by her own son is too heartbreaking to overcome. But this is a common story among the elderly residents of the Guru Vishram Vridh Ashram. “I’ve seen mothers in old and torn clothes, their bodies smelling and their hands and feet rotting and covered in maggots,” shares Dr. G.P. Bhagat, founder of the ashram. These abandoned elderly men and women lay starving on the streets hoping for someone to rescue them from their suffering. As the whole world grapples with the global pandemic of Covid-19, India has experienced an alarming rise in the number of persons identified with the virus since March’2020. The situation has compounded for the state of West Bengal with the lashing of a super cyclone on 20th May’2020 named “Amphan” and the Sundarban areas were the most affected part as reported by the State Government, media and INGOs/NGOs working in the locations. North 24 Pargana has been the worst hit district across the state facing the brunt of this cyclone as the landfall happened in Sundarban coast with gushing wind of 185-200kmph. The cyclone claimed loss of lives and everlasting damages on the properties and belongings of the common men. 98 deaths have been reported and most of them were from South and North 24 pgs. The villages in island area and near river embankments in North 24 pgs in Sandeshkhali I &amp; II block, have been washed away as the embankments collapsed and the saline water gushed into the fields and houses making it difficult to identify the roads and the river side. Amphan caused severe damages as there was also high tide on the day causing the water level to rise even more. The State Government along with Government of India has been taking a number of steps to prevent the spread of Covid19 virus including lockdown in phases restricting large gathering, promoting social distancing, closure of educational institutions, workplaces, business areas and other public spaces as well mandating use of masks and other safety kits and relief for Amphan affected population as well. While these steps have definitely created more public awareness on preventing the spread of COVID 19 after this super cyclone, a significant section of the marginalised population are on the verge of hunger and other forms of inequities as their livelihoods, shelter, and minimum protection have been adversely affected making them more poor, deprived, desperate and insecure. Along with them the service providers working at the frontline for catering to the need of basic health services as well as hygiene and sanitation need comprehensive coverage of safety kits to enable them to protect themselves while they are serving mankind. In this complex scenario, where the nation is fighting with Covid 19 and West Bengal is struggling to fight with dual crisis of Covid and Amphan, DSWS want to extend support to worst cyclone affected families in Hingalgunj block and Sandeshkhali block by the support of you.

A huge burden of extreme events and climate change combined with pre-existing socio-economic vulnerabilities present a challenging scenario in India. Basic needs of survival and sustenance are threatened year-long due to prevalence of extreme poverty, malnutrition, diseases, poor health infrastructure and become exacerbated due to extreme events. This is glaringly visible in the COVID-19 and lockdown situation which has disastrously impacted huge populations in Sansdeshkhali Block-I &amp; II, North 24 Parganas, West Bengal, India. The situation was worrisome for the state of West Bengal and North 24 Pargana has been one of the most vulnerable district across the state facing the brunt of this pandemic.While the basic food security of the most vulnerable is of the biggest challenge in the COVID-19 and lockdown scenario, monsoons are likely to increase the risk of irreversible consequences on health, nutrition and basic rights of the children. Based upon the fragility of geographies, their vulnerability to multiple hazards such as flood, cyclone, heavy monsoons, waterlogging, lightening, crop failure etc. and impact on the most marginalized people, Dhagagia Social Welfare Society (DSWS) has prioritized the Sundarban area (Sansdeshkhali Block-I &amp; II, North 24 Parganas) of West Bengal for the humanitarian action.  
 To address the immediate needs of the most marginalized families by ensuring food security, and hygiene support at the household level. DSWS will conduct a rigorous selection process to identify 2000 HHs. DSWS proposed project area and provide them an integrated approach package of in-kind Food and Hygiene support to address a household of five persons needs for (approx.) 15 days. Throughout the most marginalized communities, food security remains a risk, especially for children, due to the lack of sustained income. Plus, the most vulnerable households will also receive a standardized hygiene kits that will include masks, soap and other items. The in-kind support is necessary because households are discouraged from traveling outside their home due to the lock-down. By providing the in-kind support, it reduces the risks of households having to exit the home to obtain the supplies as well support them during the current scenario of poor income source. 
 DSWS has been actively engaged in the relief operations however realizes that it is not the answer to stop exploitation of girls and women and to end the extreme poverty. Through this support we would like to provide food and relief materials to 2000 marginalized poor families and poor girls who are at the risk of dropping out and get into extreme form of slavery due to forced marriage, trafficking etc.

Helping Underprivileged Families during COVID-19 in Coastal Areas of North 24 Parganas, West Bengal

Considering the miserable conditions of the women and adolescent girls in the islands of Sundarbans and also the vulnerabilities of being victims of domestic violence, child marriage and human trafficking, it has been planned to create alternative livelihood opportunities for them so that they can live a life with dignity. The existing sources of livelihood options are not viable for meaningful income and are also dependent on the climatic environment. The proposed intervention would cater to 200 selected women and adolescent girls from four villages for capacity building on tailoring skills. DSWS as the implementing organisations would provide them with such skills at their training centre. Subsequently they would be linked with Govt. schemes through which they would be able to start their own production.

The proposed intervention would cater to 100 selected women and adolescent girls from four villages for capacity building on tailoring skills. DSWS as the implementing organisations would provide them with such skills at their training centre. Subsequently they would be linked with Govt. schemes through which they would be able to start their own production. a.     Provide tailoring skill development training to the selected group of women and adolescent girls from the 04 villages.b.    Operate Four Multi Activity Centre (MAC) in the four villages for providing educational support to the children of these families along with counselling and life skills support.c.     Capacity building of the selected women and adolescents on their Right &amp; Entitlements, health care and nutritional care.d.    Organize community sensitization on prevention of human trafficking, child marriage and domestic violence.e.     Develop a tracking mechanism for the targeted women and adolescents to follow up and support other adolescent girls in the communities. 
 1.    95% of the targeted women and adolescent girls would complete tailoring training. 2.    About 70% of the trainee would be linked with earning sources with local employers.3.    90% children at MAC would be ensured to be retained in schools and improved in their academics.4.    Process for formation of four Self Help Groups would be initiated.5.    Tracking at household level would restrict the incidences of child marriage, domestic violence and human trafficking by 50%.

Creating Livelihood Opportunities for Vulnerable tribal Women and Adolescent Girls in Sundarbans, North 24 Parganas, West Bengal, India

Reducing incidents of severely acute malnourished and moderately acute malnourished cases of malnutrition among children below 5 years of age in Sundarbans by 2025.Under-nutrition and micronutrient deficiencies are major public health challenges in the Sundarbans. Under nutrition, particularly in the first 1000 days from conception to two years, can greatly reduce long-term physical and cognitive development and is strongly associated with high morbidity and mortality. One of the greatest challenges facing is the intergenerational cycle of under nutrition. Young mothers, who are stunted by chronic under nutrition gives birth to low birth weight babies. These children then have a poor start in life and are more likely to have growth failure which, when combined with inadequate food intake and caring practices, leads to stunting and being underweight as a child and teenager. The high rate of adolescent pregnancies further exacerbates the situation as they are more likely to result in a low weight baby. 
 1: Improve health seeking behaviour and practices of women, men and children on Infant, Young Child and Maternal Nutrition and environmental health issues through their active participation2: Strengthen linkage with local self-government and Government Departments to create, strengthen and replicate sustainable solutions and mechanisms

The pandemic and subsequent lockdown resulting in loss of livelihood has pushed the already marginalized families to the edge of survival.  On the other hand, in the state, the district of North 24 Parganas has been particularly hard hit by the cyclone. Torrential rains, fierce winds of up to 180 km per hour, devastated the areas, cut off road links, snapped power lines, destroyed crops and displaced hundreds of thousands in the region after the storm made landfall on 20th May 2020. The misery caused by both lockdown and the storm has left the people of North 24 Parganas at their wits end and with little means to follow containment measures for Covid-19. Lots of families are facing an uncertain future as an aftermath of Amphan and in the wake of rapidly spreading Covid-19.The dual attack has impacted almost all sphere of life and activities of North 24 parganas. Learning of children is the worst hit with schools closed down for almost a year now and digital divide has created an era of learning divide. Digital education is even beyond the dreams of the children living in the remote areas of Sundarbans.  As the days are passing by, it is not only reflecting short-term brunt on the continuity of learning but also engendering far-reaching societal consequences. It can be envisaged that the current disruption in education will lower educational outcomes among learners.  On the basis of above situation and context, DSWS proposes to support children to resume as well as continue education and escape from being lost generation learners through:1.     Developing child profile of the area 2.     Facilitating School enrolment and re-enrolment of children3.     Providing academic support for reducing learning gaps among children 4.     Providing support for social and emotional wellness of the children with a special focus on COVID safety 5.     Making families responsive towards the needs of the children6.     Ensuring safety of children by introducing community based vigilance system and responsive mechanism 
 1.Community will develop habit of enrolling children to schools. 2. 60% of these children will have improved academic outcome in school. 3. School going habit will be regularized among the children. 4. Children will be able to identify the cases of violation of child rights and raise voice for addressing their issues of concern. 5.Reduction in cases of child labour and child marriage at family level. 6.Improved hygiene practice noticed in families. 7.Child rights will be established at family level. 8.A pool of resource persons evolved at the community level for better sustainability of the programme. 9.Cases of school dropout, early marriage and trafficking will decrease in the community. 10.Child friendly environment in schools are established
