For a mother who has spent her entire life loving and raising her child, being beaten and mercilessly thrown out onto the streets by her own son is too heartbreaking to overcome. But this is a common story among the elderly residents of the Guru Vishram Vridh Ashram. “I’ve seen mothers in old and torn clothes, their bodies smelling and their hands and feet rotting and covered in maggots,” shares Dr. G.P. Bhagat, founder of the ashram. These abandoned elderly men and women lay starving on the streets hoping for someone to rescue them from their suffering. But most people walk past them without a second glance. “Like this”, Dr. Bhagat explains, “many elders die on the roads.”Since 2003, SHEOWS (Saint Hardyal Educational and Orphans Welfare Society) has rescued over 10,000 elderly people from the streets and given them a home with care and support. The Guru Vishram Vridh Ashram has a dedicated rescue team that saves the elderly from the streets and gives them immediate medical care upon their arrival at the home. To tend to the multiple health complications of the seniors, the home has a medical facility with doctors and nurses, a physiotherapy unit, a pathology lab, a digital X-ray monitoring machine and a pharmacy to provide 24-hour care to older adults anytime they require assistance, even during emergencies. DAR focuses on five main programs, ABC (Animal Birth Control), Rabies Eradication, Street Animal Rescue, Humane Education/Community Outreach, and Adoption. These programs are designed to effectively achieve our mission and goals which are in line with the <a href="https://www.icam-coalition.org/wp-content/uploads/2022/10/DPM-and-SDGs-report-2022.pdf" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" target="_blank">United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)</a> by enhancing public health (SDG 3) and creating safer, more sustainable cities by reducing human-dog conflicts (SDG 11).1. ABC (Animal Birth Control) - India has the most stray dogs in the world at an estimated 62 million. This program is a systematic approach to stabilize the street dog population humanely. We use the ICAM (International Campaign Animal Management coalition) protocols as guidance. Goal: 1200 sterilizations in 20242. Rabies Eradication - Rabies is a neglected zoonotic disease per the World Health Organization, with India having the highest incidence of human deaths by rabies in the world at 1 death every 30 minutes, 95% of the time caused by a dog bite, and most victims are impoverished children. We run an annual mass rabies vaccination and awareness program each year starting on World Rabies Day, September 28th to tackle the issue. Goal: 3000 in 20243. Street Animal Rescue – This program provides an optimal environment for any small animal needing 24/7 care due to accidents, disease, cruelty, or abandonment. Goal/Capacity: 500 annually 4. Humane Education and Community Outreach – expanding in 2024, goals is to increase programs and community interaction by 100% from 12 programs to 24. Programs will include: <ol><li>Our school education program called “Animal Buddies,” teaches young children how to be kind to stray dogs even if they are scared of them. The kids also learn bite safety and rabies protocols. </li><li>Karuna Rural Community Outreach Program The goal is to have No rabies cases. No dog bites. No Cruelty.
