The extent of the struggles here was beyond my imagination. These villages had no connectivity to the outside world, no healthcare, no education, there was absolutely nothing”, says Bipin Dhane founder of the school. Bipin, who grew up in the small town of Satara in Maharashtra, faced countless financial hardships. Despite his struggles, Bipin secured admission to the prestigious Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur, and then went on to take up a job in Singapore. Owing to his childhood experiences Bipin was always inclined towards helping the less fortunate, and he believed in the transformative power of education. It was in 2016 that Bipin left his lucrative career abroad and moved to Majuli, to provide the children from this inaccessible river island education they were deprived of.“Whatever little money I had saved, I gave it to my parents. I had no money to start the school. It was then that villagers came together to build bamboo huts. Each family donated bamboo, wood, and whatever little they could. Digantar Shiksha Evam Khelkud Samiti was registered on 31 March 1987 under the Rajasthan Societies Registration Act, 1958. The organization's key objectives include establishing and running schools to improve education through new perspectives and ideas, developing educational thought and practices, undertaking and encouraging educational research, and working for cultural upliftment and social development. With a strong foundation in both theoretical perspectives and practical implementations, the organization has developed a robust model for Continuous Professional Development (CPD) through its two complementary streams of action: The Digantar Vidyalayas and the Academic Resource Unit (TARU).1. Digantar VidyalayasDigantar Vidyalayas serve as practical sites where theoretical perspectives and innovative educational practices are implemented and observed. The two schools currently operating under Digantar-one primary school at Ratwali with 63 students and 2 teachers, and another at Bhavgarh Bandhya with 181 students and 9 teachers - are not just providing quality education to underprivileged children but also training sites for education professionals. Key Contributions of Digantar Vidyalayas:<ul><li>Learning Site for Education Functionaries: The Vidyalayas have been instrumental in providing hands-on training/internship opportunities for NGOs, government schools, and student-teachers from universities and colleges. Over the past decade, 5 to 8 groups of about 40 B.El.Ed. and B.Ed. students visit the schools annually to learn about free-paced pedagogy and continuous comprehensive evaluation (CCE) and aspects of the functioning of the school.</li><li>Practical Implementation of Theoretical Concepts: The schools showcase the practical application of theoretical concepts allowing visitors to understand integrated (ungraded) education and CCE. This has significantly helped bridge the gap between theory and practice for many educators.</li></ul>2. Academic Resource Unit (TARU)TARU is a unit of Digantar, dedicated to enriching the quality of education by building a solid knowledge base and providing comprehensive support for research and academic pursuits. Over the years, TARU has expanded its scope significantly, offering support to the government system and various organizations across the country involved in elementary education. Key Contributions of TARU:TARU, as part of its core activities, conducts diverse training programs for teachers and other educational workers. It also organizes short-term courses and workshops and actively engages in research projects and material development tailored for the benefit of school children and educational workers. By adhering to a well-defined theoretical framework through various capacity-building programs, TARU aims to foster meaningful educational practices that contribute to the growth and development of individuals and society. By doing this, it actively contributes to education discourse, theory building, and teacher development, drawing from its extensive ground-level experience.Over time, TARU has spearheaded numerous initiatives in education, establishing over 200 Sahaj Shiksha Kendras and 500 Alternative Schools. TARU's contributions extend to national and international conferences, policy meetings, and curriculum development, impacting states like Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Orissa, and Bihar. It also played pivotal roles in shaping educational programs such as the MAEE at TISS and the M.Ed. program at Azim Premji University. Additionally, TARU was instrumental in the development of the National Curriculum Framework 2005.3. Publications<ol><li>Shiksha Vimarsh: A bi-monthly Magazine in Hindi. Over the years the magazine has become a resource for many organizations, including some universities, who run their educational courses in Hindi. Presently, we are forced to suspend its publication till additional resources are secured.</li><li>Digantar Teaching/Learning Materials: In addition to Shiksha Vimarsh, Digantar publishes its teaching/learning materials for primary education. Many organizations use the materials to avail of their logical development and pedagogical insights.</li></ol>
