“The abusers insert a candle or fingers in the vagina of children torture them. If the children don’t relent even then, the abusers put chilli powder so that children will say “yes” because of the burning of the skin… There are teeth marks on their bodies, and their vaginal parts are burnt. When children stay in these conditions, it is painful even to hear,” says Lalitha SA of the Society for Participatory Integrated Development (SPID), while talking about many heart-rending stories of trafficked children in red-light areas. In over three decades, the team of SPID led by Lalitha, has saved over 3000 children from the red-light areas in Delhi, such as GB Road, and many from clutches of sex trafficking. While Lalitha has also helped many women escape the clutches of being forced into sex work, the SPID is focused on rescuing children and giving them a better life.Sadly, many more children need to be rescued and need a loving home. I was filled with anguish and resolved to do something,” says Girish Kulkarni who has made it his life’s mission to rescue children from red light areas and give them a safe and secure childhood. In the last 3 decades Girish has saved over 1100 girls from a life of abuse in red-light areas, giving them a loving home, education and medical care. I had even seen my friend’s 15-year-old sister and 70-year-old grandmother being forced to do sex work for the price of a cup of tea”, recalls Girish. “I started by merely feeding and teaching children of sex workers initially with the intention of giving them some respite from the horrors of life of abuse in red-light areas. Gradually more and more mothers started coming to me and asked me to take their children away, even if it was just for a couple of hours,” he further adds.The work that Girish started in his youth gradually grew to become a movement, with many more joining his cause. That was the day I knew my mission in life was to get these children out of the hell-like conditions in red-light areas. DEVI Sansthan is a non-profit organisation that was founded in Lucknow, India to provide the dignity of quality education to underprivileged children and adults. DEVI's vision is to achieve universal Foundational Literacy and Numeracy (FLN) for all children and adults. Through its flagship Global Dream Disruptive Literacy program, DEVI is creating large-scale transformation by implementing research based, swift, scalable and replicable methods and approaches to FLN. Through the Global Dream ALfA (Accelerating Learning for All) approach, learners can become FLN capable in 3-5 months rather that 3-5 years in school. Global Dream FLN toolkits are available in 15 Indian and 10 international languages, and are being replicated in many more. An interactive Literacy Now app is being developed that will enable delivery of large-scale FLN at near-zero costs through volunteers.DEVI is collaborating with state and district governments, NGOs, schools and other institutions across India and globally to accelerate FLN for children and adults. With government schools, DEVI is supporting the implementation of the NIPUN Bharat Mission for achieving Universal FLN in primary education in India by 2025. Nearly 50 million children in elementary schools of India did not have the FLN (Foundational Literacy and Numeracy) grade 3 level skills before the COVID-19 Pandemic. According to Azim Premji University, it is is estimated that nearly 92% of primary government school children have lost abilities in foundational literacy and 82% have lost abilities in foundational numeracy due to COVID related learning losses. Without FLN skills, children are struggling to cope with grade-level curriculum and are highly likely to dropout of school to join India's pool of 287 illiterate adult population. Urgent action is required to save a generation of children from falling into lifelong illiteracy. 
 DEVI Sansthan's flagship initiative Global Dream Disruptive FLN program aims to address the FLN crisis through its swift, research-based, scalable and replicable ALfA methodology. DEVI is implementing its 90 Day FLN program in government schools across several states to fill FLN gaps for primary school children. As part of the program, DEVI provides training to math and language teachers, master-trainers and middle level managers of the government on using the Global Dream ALfA methodology. DEVI also provides its innovative FLN toolkits and free interactive app to accelerate the learning of the children. The FLN toolkits enable self-learning and any teacher or volunteer can be a facilitator. The FLN toolkits are available in 15 Indian and 10 international languages, are are being replicated in many more. On completion of the program, children are empowered with the FLN skills and are quickly able to catch-up with grade-level curriculum. DEVI is also partnering with NGOs and schools to train their staff and volunteers to implement their own FLN programs. 
 Our vision is to achieve Universal FLN for all children by 2030 as envisioned by SDG 4. In this direction, we aim to make 10 million children and adults literate in India by 2030. Globally, we aim to make 1 billion learners literate through our Disruptive Literacy Partnership.
