As per the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation study (2012), a staggering 40% of children drop out of school between grade 5 and 7. The Annual State of Education Report (2014) stated that 51.9% children of grade 5 could not read a grade 2 text. At Dream a Dream, we believe the above are symptoms of a deeper challenge around Child Adversity. Adversity can be of many kinds – abuse, abandonment, experiences of crime, extreme poverty, poor care, poor nutrition and/or violence. Adversity affects achievement of development milestones and impacts a child’s ability to stay in school, pay attention and engage in learning, build healthy relationships, engage with the world, make healthy life choices and breakout of poverty. Educators, teachers and the government don’t understand the lifelong impact of adversity and primarily see themselves as deliverers of knowledge with a view to their pupils passing examinations. 
 The After School Life Skills Programme uses Sport (Football) &amp; Art (Painting, Crafts, Theatre, and Poetry, Music) as an experiential medium to engage with young people aged 8-15 from vulnerable backgrounds. The programme is designed to help young people develop vital life skills such as: 1. Interpersonal skills such as teamwork, communication, negotiation and coping skills. 2. Cognitive skills such as decision-making, problem solving and critical thinking. 3. Creativity, confidence, self-awareness and a passion for learning. Dream a Dream has established long-term partnerships with affordable private, government and charity run schools in urban slum communities of Bangalore to offer our programmes as an after-school complementary activity. Trained Life Skills facilitators, recruited from the local community (currently 20 of our facilitators are young graduates from the programme), deliver the programme at the school premises. 
 The After School Life Skills Programme develops vital Life Skills in young people. Research shows that students who develop social-emotional skills and academic mind-sets are better equipped to succeed in school and able to transfer theoretical concepts to real-life situations early on. Dream a Dream has been delivering our Life Skills programme to 30,000 young people since 2002 and has evidenced higher retention and ability to deal with life’s challenges with confidence. The programme has benefitted young people like Vishwa, who in 2012 travelled to Chicago to study Animation and today has completed college, is gainfully employed and mentors other young people. Padma who dropped out of education, completed a year-long dance scholarship at a renowned dance academy and is currently employed as a dance teacher. A secondary outcome of the healthcare crisis is the economic crisis due to the extended lockdowns resulting in increased hunger and poverty. With primary earning members losing their jobs and often the only income streams, finite family budgets have diminished further. This has put a strain on the resources available for basic sustenance. 
 We are geared up for a massive ration kit distribution operation, potentially reaching out to multiple families for the next 3 months and providing this support for multiple months until families are able to re-earn income independently.

 Dream a Dream is working to bring a mindset change among stakeholders in the ecosystem to reimagine the purpose of education towards thriving. Our direct programmes focus on social emotional learning (SEL) and empowering young people to thrive by developing life skills. We are also working with state partners to mainstream SEL in the Indian education system and to focus on whole child development. 
 As we move forward from the devastation of the COVID crisis we commit to ensure that children have the life skills to overcome adversity and prepare for an uncertain future. To ensure every child is responsible, happy, and resilient, we need to build back better. The COVID-19 pandemic has given rise to newer challenges. For the demographic of young people that Dream a Dream serves, stark and growing inequalities have emerged. One of the more glaring spaces where COVID has exacerbated existing gaps has been in education. A UNICEF report revealed that in India, due to Coronavirus, there has been a closure of 1.5 million schools that impacted the lives of 247 million students. With schools being closed for over a year and a big push towards shifting classes/learning online, the unequal access to technology-based education inputs has only increased. According to a recent study by Oxfam, as many as 80% of Indian students could not access online schooling during the lockdown, and many might not return to classrooms when they reopen. The digital divide is apparent as only 24% of Indian households have access to digital devices and internet access. Online education is serving at best, only one in every four children in India.Not only has the pandemic affected access to education, but there has also been a loss of income and livelihoods, further diminishing finite family resources. This has resulted in children being forced to become adults, a loss of learning, and ultimately opportunities. The fallout of the pandemic on educational outcomes and future job opportunities will be borne by children coming from existing vulnerable backgrounds. 
 We have witnessed the impact of this digital divide in the schools and communities that we work with directly in Bangalore. Schools in Bangalore have been closed for over a year and young people who do not have access to technology are struggling. A significant number of young people engaged in Dream a Dream programmes have faced difficulties in attending our programmes regularly as a single smartphone is shared amongst multiple family members. The situation is grim for students and teachers from low income private schools in Bangalore. We at Dream a Dream are seeking to bridge this digital divide by investing in digital infrastructure and helping young people who do not have access to any devices to ensure continued access to learning opportunities. We plan to support young people studying in class 9th and 10th from 20 schools across Bangalore (2 government schools and 18 low cost private schools). We also plan to extend this support to young adults from our two Career Connect Centres in Bommanahalli and KR Puram. Additionally, we also will provide Internet Data packages to all the young people for the next 3-6 months. This would allow them to upskill themselves and explore online opportunities to enter the world of online services or enhance their existing family ventures.
