Dear Friends of DSF! As this unfortunate and disrupted year draws to a close, we look back at the impact of the pandemic on the lives of our people, especially student community. Although, we end this year on a positive note, with rising vaccination rates, reopening of schools and in-person classes, this was perhaps one of the most challenging year for educators and students that our generation can recollect. The students now need increased support academically, financially, emotionally… in several ways. The pandemic had an impact not just on academics but also the broader health and well-being of students, especially mental health. Many students lost not just on learning, but also lives of loved ones – parents and earning members of the family. Some caretakers lost their jobs and sources of income, making it imperative for the students to partake in livelihood support for the family. After the initial Covid relief support, our immediate focus at DSF was to recover unfinished learning and reimagine education methods for the long term. However, we adopted a holistic approach, listening to the issues of the students and parents to provide academic and non-academic support alike. We are glad, we could prevent many drop-out cases and ensure continuity in education for the students. Our inhouse counsellors and Education facilitators have been available round the clock for our students and their families. For those who needed special care, our partner professional psychotherapists ensured the mental wellbeing during these critical times. It was ironical that four DSF students finished their medical degrees and embarked upon their post-graduation or internships this year. We were proud to see them provide vital support as Covid Warriors to the community! *Dr. Lakshmi (daughter of civil labourer) secured a coveted seat in AIIMS for her Masters in Anaesthesia and Critical care. In another first, Leena (daughter or autorickshaw driver) cleared her CA finals and became the first Chartered Accountant from DSF! Nearly 80% of those who completed their degrees found placement in good firms.Our collective efforts have ensured over a thousand students have been able to continue education seamlessly and their families taken care of, during this crucial pandemic period. They need our support all the more as the uncertainty due to the pandemic still looms large over us. Only 8 out of 100 children who start school reach till graduation in India today. 31% of our youth (15-29 years) are not in education, employment or training. Merely 53% of youth completing graduation are employable. Due to the lack of quality education and socio-economic vulnerability forces, many children and youth dropped out of school to take up employment. Not equipped with knowledge and requisite skills, sustained livelihood is a distant dream for most. This prevents them from changing their, or their family’s reality. The challenge is to motivate them, ensure continuity in their education, create an atmosphere of knowledge acquisition &amp; development, upskill and handhold them till they find suitable employment, contributing to nation building and creating agents of positive change in the society. 
 The programme identifies students from socio economically vulnerable communities and supports them financially to enrol to schools/institutions of their choice, from 8th standard to when they complete their under-graduation. The DSF Education &amp; Development centre provides them free access to computer lab, library and state-of-the art facilities and amenities. Intensive academic coaching and need based support is provided on a regular basis. Further handholding is provided through life skills, leadership and soft skill development. Individual guidance and support is given through one-on-one mentoring. In the later stages, DSF Finishing School will hone their skills to increase their employability and succeed in their chosen field. We create a sustainable ecosystem by working closely with parents and empowering them, leveraging the discretionary efforts of civil society. 
 Aimed at students from marginalized backgrounds, the impact we seek to create through the interventions are:•      Making of leaders and graduates by supporting deserving students from vulnerable backgrounds to complete graduation uninterrupted by financial, academic, psychological or any other challenges•      Enhanced academic performance, learning and development through structured academic and mentoring sessions•      Enhanced innovative, adaptive and enterprise skills through focussed one-on-one support•      Holistic development of students including physical and emotional well-being•      Placement in jobs / employment opportunities of student’s choice within 2/3 months of completion of their graduation•      Creating a sustainable ecosystem that fosters transformation through interface of multiple stakeholders.•      Creating possibilities and breaking the poverty cycle for underserved youth, thereby contributing to nation buildingOver the years we have transformed the lives of hundreds of children by empowering them with education. Our interventions have equipped students with requisite employable skills with 200 plus of our alumni working with big multinational companies. Over 3000 children have had the opportunity to continue education in an institution and course of their choice. Over 3000 families are now empowered creating communities which are now agents of positive change.

This indicates the amount of human capital wasted, as we prepare to capitalize on our demographic dividend.  Enormous talent and potential lies hidden within India, especially in our low-income youth, who find themselves in mediocre careers and lifestyles due to financial constraints, poor quality education and lack of appropriate guidance and mentoring. India’s job landscape is transitioning with new emerging technologies, new business models and new markets, even as unemployment continues to be a major issue. There is a pressing need for job-seekers and entrepreneurs, to leverage the current growing opportunities in business, e-commerce, science and technology, to create employment, wealth and well being for themselves and the communities. A study by Ernst and Young suggests that even as early as the year 2022, 9% of youth would be employed in jobs that don’t even exist today and 37% would require radically changed skills sets. This rapidly changing jobs ecosystem and the current scenario of dearth of skills, makes it even more imperative to ensure youth from under-served backgrounds are not left behind, have opportunities for quality education, are provided with hand holding and are empowered with skills, which would boost their confidence to create leaders and innovators. 
 We propose to educate and empower our youth and groom them into qualified, trained professionals who will be well equipped for the jobs of the future modern India. The aim is to generate comprehensive, education and development opportunity for students aspiring to pursue higher education in various upcoming career fields suited to their interest and aptitude. The TenPlus Programme is an intervention to educate socio economically vulnerable students beyond Grade 10 and enroll them into their chosen undergraduate programme suitable to their attitude and aptitude and support them till they complete their graduation and find suitable livelihood opportunities.The programme strives to reach the most vulnerable groups like children rehabilitated from Child Labour, orphans, with single parent, from troubled family situations - from dire socio economic conditions who have finished their high school education.The programme provides them with opportunities to grow further through:•      Institution choice and financial assistance to pursue course of their interest•      Structured high impact academic coaching for improved performance•      Individual need based skill development and enhancement•      Guidance through structured mentoring programme•      Increasing employability through Finishing School workshops and exposure to expectations of corporate world•      Leveraging skills and expertise of volunteers from diverse backgrounds to provide exposure and build network
