Due to COVID 19 pandemic there was a phase-wise lockdown across the country leading to large-scale social, economic and political instability. A large number of migrant workers returned to their villages. With the closure of schools and Anganwadi centers, the challenges of children's health and education had further increased. All these challenges hampered our work in all the project areas. The Government delayed its response due to its political compulsions in taking a decision on return of migrant workers to their homes. This led to spread and unplanned responses resulting in huge crisis to the poor and the vulnerable, lower caste-class population, widows, daily wage earners and migrants. Since then, the livelihood issues have been critical for these communities as they have consumed the food with them as well as exhausted the assets available with them. The farming communities have been the most badly affected section which has resulted in nutritional deficiency of women and girls in the farming communities as they continue to serve better and adequate food to men and male child in the patriarch society as of rural Bihar.   
 Dalit Vikas Abhiyan Samiti is organisation a dally long sensitization program for women of farming communities and Scheduled caste to orient them on cash crop and vegetable cultivation for nutritional supplements as well as to generate additional income in small plots and kitchen garden with seasonal vegetable with local demand as, lady figure, potato and Onion cultivations, Pumpkins and bitter guard a few to name . These women are also being provided with high quality tested seeds and macro – micro nutrients to promote quality cultivation. As these produces have good demand locally and are also fetched by big vegetable vendors they are easily marketed in the locality. Same part of the produce is also being utilized for household consumption. these interventions are well taken by the community and there is a huge demand for the same in this crisis situation.  
 With the livelihood promotion program, 500 homeless marginalized families will be self-employed and self-reliant with self-employment by operating a shop locally.

The pandemic has affected the education of children in Bihar and is adversely affecting their growth. Dalit Vikas Abhiyan Samiti is bridging the gap by providing educational competencies and resources to children in government schools, according to their age and level of learning (class from I – V Std) for next six months. The organisation is setting up 20 Supplementary Education Centers (SECs) for remedial classes of 40 children each thereby positively impacting at least 800 children. They are also working on a back to school campaign.The schools have been closed for almost 1.5 yrs since March 2020 with COVID 19 pandemic. The digital education as promoted by national and state governments have barely made heir reach to 12% of children as an outcome of very poor internet connectivity in rural areas and poor android mobile phone accessibilities. This has not only stopped the learning process of children but has resulted in de- learning and keeping them outside the teaching – learning process i.e the learning loop. Besides due to government policy these children have been promoted to the next level of classes and would be facing the subject knowledge gap due to non-studies in previous academic year in Schools. Further this will result in low confidence and gap in reading, writing comprehension making it uncomfortable for the child to retain in schools and large scale drop out among children of the educationally most backward Mahadalit communities.  
 The project will address the gaps in educational competencies of children according to age and level of class from I – V Std in government schools expected to be reopened in next 15 days. ·        Operationalizing Supplementary Education Centers (SECs): Remedial courses will be administered at village level supplementary education Centre through volunteers for 2 hours every day to fill gap in class appropriate learning among children for next three months so that the child is able to comprehend the subject matter on the current class to which she/he has been promoted. This will be followed with supplementing the educational process of current learning level as per class enrolled. Each SEC will support 40 children and 20 such centres will be run for next six months (15th feb 2022 - 15 August 22) under the proposed project. ·        Back to School campaign will be organized to bring the children back and retain children in School’s post CoVID pandemic. ·        Capacity Building of SEC volunteers on inclusive teaching methodology to address the learning outcomes of the children. ·        Promoting Covid safety protocols in schools and villages among children through: Behavior change communication, sensitization of govt. schools’ teachers and community.  
 The project will impact in improving the educational competencies of the children of the mahadalit communities enabling their retention in the schools and improved learning outcomes. This will also promote the inclusive educational process in schools and also motivate parents to send their children to schools. To capacity building initiatives of the volunteers will not only develop a cadre of resource groups to support the supplementary education in villages but also support the home-based learning among the larger group of children. The cadre of volunteer will keep on raising the educational issues at various platforms for improvement of educational services in schools. Promoting covid safety protocols through Behavior change communication and vaccination drive to promote the safety cover for children in the age group 6-18 yrs against covid infections thereby reducing mortality and morbidity among children.

Back to  Schools – An intervention to ensure the progressive learning outcomes of children from Mahadalit communities in Tajpur block of Samasitpur, Bihar

In India, particularly in rural India, there exists a large gap between the ratio of literate boys to girls. Young girls face a lot of obstacles in their education. Often, they have to leave the studies due to lack of finance. The marriage of girls is another important factor in their education. Additionally, lack of sanitary facilities for girls in schools is a great challenge for adolescent girls in schools. Lack of supervision and personal guidance, and the need to work when they should be in school, are also the major education inhibiting factors for young women. 
 Dalit Vikas Abhiyan Samiti aims to support girl child education in the Samastipur district of Bihar. Our aim is not only to provide education to young women, but to focus on the quality of education they are receiving. Supporting young women's education makes them an independent and integral part of the society. The education of girls and women is an integral part of national development. 
 Dalit Vikas Abhiyan Samiti has managed to support 20,000 girls get quality education through their admissions into school. We have an education centre in the Samastipur district of Bihar. We have 100 small campaigns running to support young women's education. We have made small clubs of young girls who are volunteering to impart value education to other girls and persuading them to study. We are working to help the school dropout girls to continue their education through their re-admission.

Most of the time, children develop anti-social tendencies and take the form of business and they later go on to do many anti-social activities. They thrive in what is an inhumanly painful life.During the early years children develop the cognitive, physical, social and emotional skills they need to succeed in life. These early experiences are largely determined by appropriate nutrition, health care and learning opportunities. Early childhood education (ECE) and nutrition have a positive impact on children's attendance, retention and learning in primary and higher education.Solutions – What We DoDalit Vikas Abhiyan Samiti (DVAS) aims to make those children, whose father or mother dies after birth, free from malnutrition and connect them with education by running nutrition cum education centers for overall development and to connect them with the mainstream of the society and to help them in further development. Works towards addressing the issue of malnutrition and stunting among destitute children in the age group of 3-14 years (ECE as well as inclusive education practices) and promoting education. Dalit Vikas Abhiyan Samiti (DVAS) has established 100 nutrition-cum-education center's at community places in 10 districts of Bihar, in which 1000 needy children are educated. Attainment of sustainable development affecting physical development, mental health development and physical well-being is achieved at the center's. To promote daily nutrition and education among children.Children of Nutrition-cum-Education Center get involved in the early childhood education processes joyfully and playfully. Through inclusive education practices, children at primary education level develop a sense of confidence to attend schools on a regular basis. Educational inputs are provided from. Regular health check-ups and assessment of educational progress are conducted to track improvement in physical development and learning levels.The nutrition and education program has had a positive impact in helping children achieve age-appropriate physical and cognitive development and increasing participation in daily activities and sports, which also results in increased learning levels. After the center, they are added to the primary schools by enrolling them. Also, preparation is done for these children for admission from high secondary to board and other schools, so that these destitute children can get admission in good schools like Navodaya, Sainik School, Kendriya School, Can get good education in schools run by Welfare, Kasturba School, Netarhat School etc.What we want to achieveDalit Vikas Abhiyan Samiti (DVAS) is demanding from the community to provide relief to these marginalized children from malnutrition and cognitive development. I need your support to make every destitute and homeless child safe from inhuman suffering

Since the outbreak of Covid 19 in the country the functioning of Schools has been largely obstructed as being closed for majority period for last wo years. Though there have been some initiatives by government of Bihar by promoting online classes. Though the initiatives are appreciable but it has not been able to provide adequate coverage and results due to technical issues as less than 20% of the rural populace having access to android cell phones, limited understanding of usage of technical system coupled with issues of internet connectivity and so on. The effectivity was also largely compromised as majority of children are first generational learners or family back ground with minimal level of education to address the learning teaching process of children. This has not only pushed the children out of learning loop but observations and several studies have proven that they have forgotten the learnings of their previous classes making it very difficult for them cope up with studies of their higher classes as they have been promoted higher classes . 
 DVAS proposes to run 45 days remedial course-based fil the learning gaps thereby enabling the child to cope up with the studies of higher classes. For example – if the child s currently in Std – VI at present the remedial course will focus on key lessons and competencies of class V in main subjects as mathematics, language or environment science which is key subjects of government schools. This will help the child to understand important concepts of class V which they have missed out as academic sessions could not be organized in classroom during school closure period. This will help the child to connect with higher concepts and course of the present class i.e Std VI) This will not only instill a sense of confidence among the child but also make them confident to pure their current higher level of studies. For this to happen the organization will administer the remedial course in small batch of 15 children for 2 hours a day for 30 days through educated village youths for Std – I- III children  
 The initiative will not only support the children in accelerating learning pace but also positively impact the regularization and retention of children in schools with confidence. Once they catch up with the current level of competencies the children will not only demonstrate increased learning levels but also reflect sustained retention and reduced drop out rate.

Connecting marginalized children deprived of education in the mainstream of education: Samastipur in Bihar

Sudden announcement of  complete and partial lockdown in wake of COVID 19 situation has paralyzed life and situations of poor and rural population to a great extent. The schools in the states of Bihar have remained closed due to COVID 19 pandemic, resulting in large scale disruption in access to health, nutrition and pre school education and formal education by largescale children in 6- 14 yrs of age. As a result the Schools  could not deliver their educational services to the children though dry ration was distributed by school mengement to the children. This has kept a large number of especially Scheduled Caste childrne utside the learning loop .As majority ( 48%) of these children are first genertional learners they did not have any edcational activity at home for last one year and now are afraid to join schools as they have forgotten lessons of previous classes and uncomfortable with school routine and syallabus.  
 Dalit Vikas Abhiyan Samiti(DVAS) has been organising Back to school Campaign at village level where the parents of children are sensitized on COVID safety protocols as well as the need to send children school to keep their learning intact and progressive. Thereafter some games and revisiting of the previous lessons are conducted with childrne by DVAS for a week to promote confidence among children to go to Schools. To promote child interest in school education and extra curricular activities the DVAS team then accompanies the children to school for first five days so that the children are confident and can go on their own to the schools. This initiative is being highly appreciated by teachers who are struggling to bring back children to schools. As a rsult of this intiaitive other villagers are also being motivated to send their chidren to school after almost a years gap

The growing urbanization in Bihar has resulted in a development of over 165 informal inhabitations of Urban poor and homeless residing in temporary shelters, slums spread across the city of Patna and as temporary housing for over 4500o families. Most of the families work as daily wage earners or run petty trading activity for earning a livelihood. In adequate income of majority of these families exert pressure on children to earn and support household works especially girls in hazardous occupations, rag pickers etc resulting in large number of school drop outs and adversely impacting the educational processes.  
 Dalit Vikas Abhiyan Samiti (DVAS) has been promoting home based learning approach in 14 urban slums of patna through its cadre of Volunteers to address the learning loss of such 432 girls and enhancing their learning levels with engagement of their parents in the teaching learning process. Further the organisation is also sensitizing such families to bring the girl child back to the folds of the schools and have been successful in enrolling around 86 girls in the government schools in the vicinity of the settlements in cooperation with the school teachers enabling the children to pursue their primary and secondary education. DVAS has also linked over 800 urban poor and homeless families with different social security schemes of government to reduce the pressure on children to earn thereby encouraging parents to send their child especially girls to schools.  
  The impact of the program would be enhancement of about 400 girls in the formal education process. In 20-21 around 400-450 girls were provided education support (expense of books, copies, shoes, water bottle etc) .The program will also make marked difference in instilling confidence of the children enabling them to pursue their education and completed their formal education in primary and secondary levels.

DVAS has established 40 such nutrition and education centre in community spaces managed by the community enrolling 2000 needy children to promote daily nutrition and education among children towards attainment of steady growth impacting overall health, mental &amp; physical wellbeing.These centers are run for 2 hours a day where they are provided daily nutritional supplements i.e milk, biscuits, cooked oats to supplement their nutritional needs as per age and weight requirement. Then the children are engaged in Early Childhood Education processes in a joyful and play way manner. Children of primary education levels are provided educational inputs through inclusive education practices for instilling a sense of confidence to attend schools on regular basis. Regular health check-up and educational progression is assessed to track the physical growth and learning level improvements

Traditionally Dalits have suffered discrimination and still remain the most disadvantaged society in India. Only 19% of adolescents within these communities are educated, suggesting the majority of India’s 60 million unemployed 16-25s are formed from this group. 
 We create forums and programmes for the younger generation in marginalised communities. This project will help Dalits on the road to gaining better employment through programmes aimed at creating new skills. These will include learning how to develop an enterprise, understanding social security schemes and how best to receive the rights they deserve. 
 Our programmes will direct 500 young Dalits from rural Bihar towards finding a job they are both happy with and pays well. Just Rs. 1,200 will pave the way for these impressionable and eager students to break away from their marginalised status.
