“What will happen to them after me? I am 80+. I spend sleepless nights,” worries ex-Air Force officer, Group Captain AC Barua while talking about the future of the 28 destitute women under his care. “They have nobody in this world, sometimes they don’t remember their own names. They are absolutely alone,” he informs us as he goes from one room to the other meeting all the women who live at Seneh, the only home where they are loved and taken care of. After fighting for his country all his life, this octogenarian is now fighting to rescue homeless and abandoned women from dying on the streets. But he cannot do it alone. “Everyday I keep on getting calls from here and there. ‘Oh! there’s a woman lying here. Can you help?’ But I don’t dare to go and help because I don’t have the money. I don’t have the resources, our resources are very limited,” explains Gr. Capt. Many times these are women with mental health conditions and considered being a witch due to superstitious beliefs and beaten up as a result. They are victims of domestic abuse or widow mothers who are considered to be a burden on the family. Group Captain Barua has not only rescued them from critical conditions, he has provided them with urgent medical care, food and above all, a free safe shelter where they can live with love and care. Among these residents is Sarala Kalita who fled to save herself from the tortures of her alcoholic husband only to face neglect and trauma from her brothers- and sisters-in-law. “Both my brothers and their wives urged my father to leave me somewhere as they didn’t want to take care of me anymore. One day my brother’s wife didn’t even let me have food at home. She just wanted me to leave and go away. So that’s why, my father got in touch with Seneh through someone, and handed me over to Sir to take care of me,” says Sarita who has found joy in living at Seneh. “Coming to Seneh, it felt like I got a new life altogether. Sir has given me a harmonium. I love singing. It makes me forget everything and takes me to someplace else entirely,” she adds. More women like Sarala can find their way to a loving home like Seneh. All they need is a little bit of your kindness. “It is difficult to make both ends meet”To sustain their daily expenditure, Capt Barua needs approx ₹3 lakh a month and arranging the funds is a mammoth challenge for the NGO. “Our expenses are growing day by day. Residents are growing older, their sicknesses are increasing. At times we have to give them special food. They require more care so we have to get more employees. About half of them require leading around, 1-2 has to be fed also. Due to COVID 19 pandemic there was a phase-wise lockdown across the country leading to large-scale social, economic and political instability. A large number of migrant workers returned to their villages. With the closure of schools and Anganwadi centers, the challenges of children's health and education had further increased. All these challenges hampered our work in all the project areas. The Government delayed its response due to its political compulsions in taking a decision on return of migrant workers to their homes. This led to spread and unplanned responses resulting in huge crisis to the poor and the vulnerable, lower caste-class population, widows, daily wage earners and migrants. Since then, the livelihood issues have been critical for these communities as they have consumed the food with them as well as exhausted the assets available with them. The farming communities have been the most badly affected section which has resulted in nutritional deficiency of women and girls in the farming communities as they continue to serve better and adequate food to men and male child in the patriarch society as of rural Bihar.   
 Dalit Vikas Abhiyan Samiti is organisation a dally long sensitization program for women of farming communities and Scheduled caste to orient them on cash crop and vegetable cultivation for nutritional supplements as well as to generate additional income in small plots and kitchen garden with seasonal vegetable with local demand as, lady figure, potato and Onion cultivations, Pumpkins and bitter guard a few to name . These women are also being provided with high quality tested seeds and macro – micro nutrients to promote quality cultivation. As these produces have good demand locally and are also fetched by big vegetable vendors they are easily marketed in the locality. Same part of the produce is also being utilized for household consumption. these interventions are well taken by the community and there is a huge demand for the same in this crisis situation.  
 With the livelihood promotion program, 500 homeless marginalized families will be self-employed and self-reliant with self-employment by operating a shop locally.

Livelihood and nutritional support program for rural women:

The pandemic has affected the education of children in Bihar and is adversely affecting their growth. Dalit Vikas Abhiyan Samiti is bridging the gap by providing educational competencies and resources to children in government schools, according to their age and level of learning (class from I – V Std) for next six months. The organisation is setting up 20 Supplementary Education Centers (SECs) for remedial classes of 40 children each thereby positively impacting at least 800 children. They are also working on a back to school campaign.The schools have been closed for almost 1.5 yrs since March 2020 with COVID 19 pandemic. The digital education as promoted by national and state governments have barely made heir reach to 12% of children as an outcome of very poor internet connectivity in rural areas and poor android mobile phone accessibilities. This has not only stopped the learning process of children but has resulted in de- learning and keeping them outside the teaching – learning process i.e the learning loop. Besides due to government policy these children have been promoted to the next level of classes and would be facing the subject knowledge gap due to non-studies in previous academic year in Schools. Further this will result in low confidence and gap in reading, writing comprehension making it uncomfortable for the child to retain in schools and large scale drop out among children of the educationally most backward Mahadalit communities.  
 The project will address the gaps in educational competencies of children according to age and level of class from I – V Std in government schools expected to be reopened in next 15 days. ·        Operationalizing Supplementary Education Centers (SECs): Remedial courses will be administered at village level supplementary education Centre through volunteers for 2 hours every day to fill gap in class appropriate learning among children for next three months so that the child is able to comprehend the subject matter on the current class to which she/he has been promoted. This will be followed with supplementing the educational process of current learning level as per class enrolled. Each SEC will support 40 children and 20 such centres will be run for next six months (15th feb 2022 - 15 August 22) under the proposed project. ·        Back to School campaign will be organized to bring the children back and retain children in School’s post CoVID pandemic. ·        Capacity Building of SEC volunteers on inclusive teaching methodology to address the learning outcomes of the children. ·        Promoting Covid safety protocols in schools and villages among children through: Behavior change communication, sensitization of govt. schools’ teachers and community.  
 The project will impact in improving the educational competencies of the children of the mahadalit communities enabling their retention in the schools and improved learning outcomes. This will also promote the inclusive educational process in schools and also motivate parents to send their children to schools. To capacity building initiatives of the volunteers will not only develop a cadre of resource groups to support the supplementary education in villages but also support the home-based learning among the larger group of children. The cadre of volunteer will keep on raising the educational issues at various platforms for improvement of educational services in schools. Promoting covid safety protocols through Behavior change communication and vaccination drive to promote the safety cover for children in the age group 6-18 yrs against covid infections thereby reducing mortality and morbidity among children.

Back to  Schools – An intervention to ensure the progressive learning outcomes of children from Mahadalit communities in Tajpur block of Samasitpur, Bihar

In India, particularly in rural India, there exists a large gap between the ratio of literate boys to girls. Young girls face a lot of obstacles in their education. Often, they have to leave the studies due to lack of finance. The marriage of girls is another important factor in their education. Additionally, lack of sanitary facilities for girls in schools is a great challenge for adolescent girls in schools. Lack of supervision and personal guidance, and the need to work when they should be in school, are also the major education inhibiting factors for young women. 
 Dalit Vikas Abhiyan Samiti aims to support girl child education in the Samastipur district of Bihar. Our aim is not only to provide education to young women, but to focus on the quality of education they are receiving. Supporting young women's education makes them an independent and integral part of the society. The education of girls and women is an integral part of national development. 
 Dalit Vikas Abhiyan Samiti has managed to support 20,000 girls get quality education through their admissions into school. We have an education centre in the Samastipur district of Bihar. We have 100 small campaigns running to support young women's education. We have made small clubs of young girls who are volunteering to impart value education to other girls and persuading them to study. We are working to help the school dropout girls to continue their education through their re-admission.
