Every successful and developed country, without exception has educated its children and brought women into workforce. India unfortunately has not been able to do this. This has vast consequences. Educating children and bringing women into work force leads to productivity growth, helps people move into urban jobs, creates a competitive economy that can spur growth.  Out of total 298 million school going age children in India, 37 million (12.5%) children don’t go to school (GOI, ESAG 2018). Of those who go to school, learning levels are abysmally low. 57% children in class 5 cannot read class 2 Hindilevel text and 75% cannot do simple division. Further, 30% in class 8 cannot read class 2 Hindi text book and 55% cannot do simple division (ASER Report – 2022). Low learning level leads to high dropout from schools at 6th, 9th and 11th grade level and are significantly higher for underprivileged children especially girls. Of 113 million adolescent girls in India, only 30% graduate at grade 10 and only 8.3% graduate. Almost 50% of them are married before 18. Providing quality education at primary level is single most important way forward to address above critical issues. 
 E&amp;H Foundation has been addressing the critical need of India by enhancing learning levels at primary level by reaching out to vulnerable children and parents, organising and setting up remedial classes in slums and remote villages, recruiting and training teachers regularly, teaching children every day using proven pedagogy and collaborating with successful and proven models. Students study through four subject worksheets which are iterative in nature. Children are encouraged to learn and engage through activities, storytelling and songs and in joyous culture. A baseline assessment of students’ learning levels is conducted at the beginning. Students are assessed through regular oral examinations, mid-term and end-term assessments and third-party evaluations. The field supervisor works with parents to ensure that children do not drop out and come regularly to classes. This intensive approach has resulted in improved grade appropriate learning, reducing dropouts and increased awareness amongst parents to continue children’s education and not drop them out from school. So far E and H Foundation has provided quality education to 25000 underprivileged children at primary level. Pilots are also being run to mentor middle and secondary class children to continue education through a community outreach program.  
 During the year 23-24, E and H foundation aims to reach out to 5000 more children with a total budget of Rs 2 Cr. Out of total amount, this campaign aims to raise Rs 30 lakh to support the initiative for the academic year 2023-24. We aim to achieve the following impact from this project:  1.     At least 70% of children will have more than 70% attendance 2.     Approximately 50% of the children will be girls. 3.     At least 70% of the children will achieve grade-appropriate learning levels.  This project would enable education for 5000 underprivileged children who would otherwise have been out of school and deprived of access to quality primary education and will reduce the gap in learning while encouraging both parents and students to empower children’s studying and learning. Building India through quality education to underprivileged children

COVID-19 has negatively impacted various dimensions of the lives of young children disrupting their association with education and healthcare as well as adversely affecting their mental well-being. School closures and shutdown of ongoing educational programs due to multiple lockdowns have further deprived these children from low-income groups of friendship and learning networks. For months, they could not come to class, as the program remained suspended from March when lockdown began. Moreover, the lack of access to appropriate devices and the lack of network access among many students is a critical challenge further widening socioeconomic disparities within classrooms and disrupting overall learning levels, which were already low in a state like UP. For some young girls, the temporary suspension of schooling has resulted in premature and permanent school discontinuation. Recent field findings suggest that if urgent attention and support is not provided at this critical stage, there is a high chance that more children in rural and urban slums of India will drop out of classrooms and get into low-paying jobs. Most of them will not be able to access formal education and will be left behind forever especially first-generation learners with little support and no facilitating education environment at home.  
 Due to disruption of educational programs and other situations emerging from COVID, most children could not come to classrooms. Digital learning was accessed wherever households had more than one smartphone and children had support from parents. From March until August, teachers, senior teachers and core teams were undergoing digital monthly trainings; Whatsapp groups were formed, supervisors were in touch with parents and content was being circulated using technology. For most children, this was not the reality. More than 80% of children enrolled in our classes are first-generation learners. Parent community significantly consists of laborers/local artisans/Zari workers who found themselves out of work doing these trying times. Despite issues in the area, E&amp;H Foundation initiated educating children in an innovative way from September onwards in groups of five to ten, maintaining COVID protocols. Programs have resumed and in the ongoing academic year, E&amp;H is supporting the education of over 5000 children in UP. Classes have resumed, children are being taught in batches - a class of 30 students will be conducted over 3 days (3.5 hours each day for a group of ten). Pedagogy has been made more robust and concise and oral assessments are being prepared to test learning levels. 
 Since its inception in 2012, E&amp;H Foundation has enabled high-quality education for over 20,000 children, directly impacting 14,000 households for Std 1-5 in 3 districts of UP - Farrukhabad, Kanpur, and Lucknow in partnership with the Bharti Foundation and ESO’s Gyan Shala models. Independent assessments over the years consistently show that the students enrolled under these programs have consistently attained grade appropriate learning, scoring 100‐150% higher marks compared to government school children and almost comparable to India’s best CBSE schools at ₹5000 per child per year, creating scaling up potential. More than 50% students enrolled under E&amp;H Foundation sponsored classes are young girls, helping bridge the gap between male and female literacy rates. Over 80% children are first-generation learners. Focus is on high-quality learning, which is accessible within communities further fostering behavior change among parents towards the education of children. By enabling high-quality learning models within these communities, we are enabling a strong foundation for these students who are first time learners, all hailing from extremely marginalized sections of society. Overall, the program has fostered enhanced learning among students, indicating that the support has led to a better understanding among parents for the need to pursue continued quality education.

Educating underprivileged children impacted by COVID-19

In India, socio-economic circumstances of a child strongly govern the type of school, education, and quality of life she will live. While enrollment in schools is common, the quality of education being provided is extremely poor, especially in the state of UP. ASER 2014 shows that 71% of class 8 children in UP cannot even read class 2 Hindi textbooks. These precious year spent in school with no learning is a huge loss to these underprivileged children and their families. Every child deserves access to quality education and healthcare to become contributing members of society and live a quality life. 
 E&amp;H Foundation is enabling quality education for the underprivileged children in UP by researching and partnering with highly successful proven models on the ground and helping them scale up at a very low cost. Currently E&amp;H Foundation has partnered with Gyanshala model that is helping children achieve grade appropriate learning in classes 1-4 at a low cost of ₹5000 per child per year compared to average government cost of ₹12000 per child. E&amp;H Foundation also works to increase community engagement, liaison with the government, run advocacy programmes, as well as facilitate the implementing organisation to become sustainable. It takes only INR 10,000 annually to educate two children, and an annual contribution of 1 Lakh can take care of an entire classroom of 25 children. 
 Since its inception, E&amp;H Foundation has provided quality education to 13000 children in 3 years for grades 1-4 in 3 districts of UP - Farrukhabad, Kanpur, and Lucknow. Independent studies show that the students have consistently attained grade appropriate learning scoring 100-­‐150% higher marks compared to government school children and almost comparable to India’s best CBSE schools at ₹5000 per child per year, creating scaling up potential. More than 55% students being educated by at such E&amp;H Foundation sponsored classes are young girls, helping bridge the gap between male and female literacy rate.

Disaster Relief

The second wave of COVID-19 is sweeping through the country and the number of cases in India have increased exponentially leading to tremendous pressure on the healthcare system causing significant mortality. One of the weakest links has been the short supply of oxygen, supplied through tankers, to hospitals and patients. A very small percentage of hospitals in India have their own reliable Oxygen generation. This has caused significant loss of life and hardships for patients, relatives, doctors and hospital staff and management. Many projection models with highly mutating virus show high chances of more future waves. Hence, interventions for augmenting oxygen supply are critical and urgently needed to save lives. It Is important and urgent that hospitals are supported to create captive oxygen generation capacity so that the dependency on external sources is limited. While the immediate demand will need to be filled by fixing the supply chain, the solution proposed will take care of the needs of hospitals 2 months from now and hospitals will be better prepared for the later part of 2nd wave and for 3rd and 4th wave, if any. 
 While India is Gasping for Breath, citizens and civil society must step in to support hospitals and governments to install oxygen generators of high capacities at various hospitals. Walking the Talk, “Friends of PadUp” have taken the initiative in partnership with E&amp;H Foundation to set up 10 Oxygen Generators of 50 LPM. After evaluating various options, we have reached a conclusion to help hospitals with maximum patient load and to make a quick difference to hospitals that already have the infrastructure to provide oxygen to the needy. To begin with, we are proposing to help a renowned hospital in Gurgaon to install an approximate 200 LPM PSA capacity cover to one ICU ward of about 35-50 beds. 200 LPM capacity will be reached by modular approach of putting 4 units of 50 LPM. This will help free up some cylinders, which can be used by other health facilities. Based on its success, the project will be quickly scaled to cover more hospitals in as many regions as possible.Work has begun on identifying other hospitals and we are in advanced discussions with the Health Ministry, Government of Haryana and other hospitals (government / PHCs / charitable &amp; private) will be identified at the earliest. 
 Creating sustainable oxygen solutionsPhase - 1: By installing 10 Oxygen Generators with a total capacity of 500 LPM will provide life-saving oxygen support to approximately 4800 patients in a year.Additional benefit: This Oxygen generation will lead to releasing existing oxygen capacity to support another 60 beds and 2400 patients.

“Oxygen4Ever” in collaboration with 'Friends of PadUp'

For the current year 2020-2021, while enrolments were being finalised, due to lockdown and widespread fear of Corona virus, classes remain suspended this summer. In early May 10-12 cases of corona virus were also reported in Farrukhabad and the area is expected to see further strengthening of lockdown. Our classrooms (Gyan Shala) in the Farrukhabad regions of UP are located in the most marginalised bastis/ urban slums in the district. Approximately 70% of parents of the students enrolled in our program are involved in Zardozi / Zari work. Other 30% are involved in daily wage labor work in trades e.g. construction, cold storage, shops and vending, rickshaw pulling including e-rickshaws. As economic activities remain suspended and will take time to pick up, families are struggling to meet their daily survival needs despite support from government and in certain cases by communities near by. Paltry savings have been exhausted and survival is becoming a key issue. Urgent need is to support these children and their families to sustain and survive these multiple lockdowns. Especially since children are exposed to risk of malnourishment and hunger during these times, which will further affect their association with and access to quality education post COVID. Debts are already increasing and families have already started selling few assets they have, to survive.  
 Over the next 100 days, E&amp;H Foundation will provide relief to these distressed families for situations emerging out of COVID 19 pandemic in Farrukhabad town. Target communities are approximately 3000 vulnerable families of children studying in our classes in over 40 urban slums in Farrukhabad. The Foundation will provide awareness on COVID mitigation, provide relief of key essential items in the form of food kits and provide support to families to dealing with COVID in an effective manner. The foundation will further assist these families over the coming months with accessing government schemes, jobs and getting back on their feet. E&amp;H Foundation will implement the project in partnership with our field partner, Education support Organization (ESO), also called Gyan Shala because of the successful education model they have promoted. The Foundation will provide relief to these families twice in the period of 100 days. Each food kit packet is for Rs 1,000/-E&amp;H Foundation's trustees and advisory members are committed to 100% matching entire project amount to reach 3,000 families at scale immediately.*Each of the food kit will have following items 10 kg Atta, 5 kg Rice, 2 Kg pulses, 1 litre cooking oil, 1 kg, salt, turmeric, soaps and masks and will cost Rs. 1,000 per packet including packaging, transportation and logistics. 
 This 100-day initiative to support the 3000 families at bottom of the pyramid population, whose children need to come back to learning w.e.f Sept 1, 2020, need support to sustain their livelihoods in the absence of daily wages and work. Sustaining these families through these tough times will ensure that these children stay nutritious, healthy and engaged and manage to come back to learning when we re-open classes while their family members get back to their jobs/work in the coming months.

Since its inception, E&amp;H Foundation has facilitated quality education for over 20,000 underprivileged children in Uttar Pradesh and helped in preventive healthcare. In 2020, due to the COVID emergency, we intervened in our work areas in UP, India reaching 30 villages, covering 6000 families and worked on enabling COVID mitigation and awareness campaigns along with facilitating access to entitlements and government programs. Besides, the foundation provided food kits to 1000 most vulnerable families. The ongoing second COVID wave in India is more intense and has penetrated rural and small semi-urban areas. This is very serious. Urgent efforts are needed to support underprivileged families as they continue to gasp for breath and struggle to establish timely access to healthcare support. The critical need is to address the lack of life-saving oxygen and essential medical supplies/facilities and to improve awareness amongst vulnerable population about COVID appropriate behaviour, managing minor cases at home, removing vaccine hesitancy etc. Efforts are also needed to improve the long-term resilience of vulnerable families by facilitating access to various government programs to support farmers, direct bank transfer, providing rations through PDS, enabling pension and increasing access to government insurance programs. There is a dire need to intervene and limit damage towards the ongoing healthcare and humanitarian crisis. 
 <ol><li>Limiting the spread of COVID by raising awareness and promoting COVID appropriate behaviour with underprivileged families along with large-scale mask distribution.</li><li>Advising on managing mild COVID cases in collaboration with district health administration aided by distribution and use of oxymeters by ASHA and teachers.</li><li>Facilitating access to life-saving oxygen through oxygen concentrators. These will be made available to patients on a rotational basis.</li><li>Facilitating access to PMJAY and state-sponsored health insurance to underprivileged families for hospitalization along with removing vaccine hesitancy and creating linkage to important Govt programs e.g. PMKSSY (subsidy to farmers), PDS, pension programs for widows, disabled and old age persons and MGNREGA etc.</li><li>Providing emergency food support to most marginalized households.</li></ol> 
 Through this appeal, E&amp;H Foundation aims to reach 50 villages, covering 10,000 underprivileged families or 50,000 beneficiaries over the next 6 months. The budget outlay to carry out these activities is Rs 50 lacs. Specific impact areas are:<ul><li>Promoting COVID appropriate behaviour with 10000 families - 50,000 people.</li><li>Distribution of masks to 6000 underprivileged families-30,000 masks.</li><li>Providing critical oxygen supply to over 1000 patients on a rotational basis through arranging 25 oxygen concentrators.</li><li>Providing 150 Oxymeters at village levels to ASHA and teachers based in the community for better home management of COVID cases and timely advice.</li><li>Increasing access to government programs for 3000 families.</li><li>Facilitating food support for 2000 marginalized families.</li></ul>

'COVIGRAM' - Providing COVID Relief in Rural UP

COVID-19 has adversely affected and drastically impacted life but much more for underprivileged families. One of the long-lasting adverse impacts of COVID 19 has been the gap in education and loss of learning for underprivileged learning for two years. Children are not the face of this pandemic but they risk being the biggest victims. As per UNICEF report globally, 100 Cr children are at risk of falling behind due to school closure, the threat being higher in poorer countries. Underprivileged children have not been able to access remote learning due to a lack of digital devices and Internet access.  Even before COVID, these underprivileged children were facing extreme challenges in learning, which have been further enhanced due to this two-year break. There is a serious threat that many of these underprivileged children will never return to school, undoing years of progress in education. Urgent and sustained action is needed to change this situation. There is a window of opportunity with COVID cases going down and a chance to reverse the learning gap in the next six months. 
 E and H Foundation proposes to enable quality education of 3000 children at primary level (Std 1 to 5) in Farrukhabad district of UP of which we aim to raise funds for 500 children through this campaign. We would run these classes in poor slums and remote villages in the Farrukhabad district. The average annual income of families of targeted children is less than Rs 8000 per month and these families barely struggle to survive. Majority of community members consist of labourers, zari workers, agriculture workers and petty traders. 80% of targeted children are first-generation learners with no support at home with regards to their education. Many children have been forced to drop out of school to enhance family income as communities find themselves out of work and accepting lower wages post lockdown in 2020.  E&amp;H Foundation will work with tried, tested and successful education pedagogy for more than 20 years.  We already have trained local teachers in these locations along with a team of supervisors and core teams. We will aim to have 25 children on average in each class. 50% of these children will be girls. In case there is another wave of COVID, we will run classes In groups of 5-10 children, following appropriate protocols to maintain continuity in learning. A baseline assessment of students’ learning levels will be conducted at the beginning of the year and worksheets for each subject will be updated based on the findings of the assessment. Teachers will be trained regularly at the monthly interval level. The field supervisor will work with parents to ensure that children who have dropped out from the education system are re-enrolled and sent to our classes. For enrolled children, regular attendance will be pushed through these meetings. Teachers will be trained digitally and in person as per the evolving situation. Students will study through four subject worksheets which are dynamic in nature and iterative based on teacher’s and supervisor’s feedback. Children are encouraged to learn and engage through activities, storytelling and songs. Students will be assessed through a combination of oral examinations, midterm and end-term assessments and third-party evaluations.  
 We aim to achieve the following impact from this project: <ol><li>At least 70% of children will have more than 70% attendance </li><li>Approximately 50% of the children will be girls. </li><li>At least 70% of the children will reduce the learning gap and 60% will achieve grade-appropriate learning levels. </li></ol> This project would enable education for underprivileged children who would otherwise have been out of school and deprived of access to quality primary education and will reduce the gap in learning while encouraging both parents and students to empower children’s studying and learning. In summary, the project will motivate and enable long-term learning of underprivileged children and give them a chance to take their families out of chronic poverty and change their future.

Every child deserves access to quality education and healthcare to become contributing members of society and live a quality life. 
 Since the learning crisis in India is an issue of scale, E&amp;H believes it is imperative to collaborate with like-minded individuals, and organizations and together, empower the lives of children at the bottom of the pyramid. This year, E&amp;H Foundation will be participating in the annual Airtel Delhi Half Marathon and in our 5th year of participation, we aim to go bigger and garner the support of all our past, existing and potential partners.  Since inception, E&amp;H Foundation has supported the education of over 19,000 students and in 2019-20, we are educating 7500 children in over 100 slums and two districts of UP. Impact on the ground is high with 80% children being first generation learners and 50% being girls. Third party assessments (EI- ASSET Tests 2019) show that children educated under our models are at par with the best CBSE schools and their average performance is better than the average performance of the state. 100% of all donations go towards the education of children under our programs as all overhead costs are taken care by founder trustees. E&amp;H Foundation is a Delhi based organisation working to enable quality education and healthcare for the underprivileged children.Since its inception in 2012, E&amp;H Foundation has reached 19,000 children in 3 districts of Uttar Pradesh and aims to reach 1,00,000 children by 2025.E&amp;H partners with successful low cost replicable models working in the field and helps them scale to reach more number of children at a faster rate. So far, E&amp;H has collaborated with ESO’s Gyanshala model as well as Bharti Foundation to tackle the growing education crisis in India, especially in the state of UP.Due to impactful pedagogy of each model, learning on the ground have been high with almost 70% class attendance and more than 50% girl students. This is especially good, considering the target groups are mostly first generational learners with minimum family support.This year E&amp;H Foundation has impacted the lives of 7500 children and is looking for donors to support it in this initiative. Since trustees of the organisation cover all overhead costs, all donations go exclusively towards the programme.
