The extent of the struggles here was beyond my imagination. These villages had no connectivity to the outside world, and very limited access to healthcare and quality education”, says Bipin Dhane, founder of the school. Bipin, who grew up in the small town of Satara in Maharashtra, faced countless financial hardships. Despite his struggles, Bipin secured admission to the prestigious Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur, and then went on to take up a job in Singapore. Owing to his childhood experiences Bipin was always inclined towards helping the less fortunate, and he believed in the transformative power of education. It was in 2016 that Bipin left his lucrative career abroad and moved to Majuli, to provide the children from this inaccessible river island education they were deprived of.“Whatever little money I had saved, I gave it to my parents. I had no money to start the school. It was then that villagers came together to build bamboo huts. Each family donated bamboo, wood, and whatever little they could. With over 1.5 million schools and 250 million students, the Indian school education system is one of the largest in the world. With 84.71% of the 1.5 million schools in India being rural, remote, tribal schools, the limited quality of education and lack of access to educational resources continue to remain a huge challenge.In 2018, we started traveling to and living with Tribal, rural, and forest communities in Uttarakhand. As part of our experiences and conversations with people, the need for education was highlighted. We started to work in a Forest school in the Mohand range of Shivalik forest adjacent to Rajaji National Park. In 2020 we reached out to rehabilitated forest zones for pastoral nomadic communities. I started working with govt schools in the area in 2021. We have been consistently enabling community youth, especially girls. Today we have a total of 20 community youth engaged with us as team members, fellows, and volunteers. We have created local language material and also stories of the communities. We have set up 5 libraries in total across the public schools with daily sessions for children. The learning kits, projects, and teaching learning materials have been contextualised.
