For a mother who has spent her entire life loving and raising her child, being beaten and mercilessly thrown out onto the streets by her own son is too heartbreaking to overcome. But this is a common story among the elderly residents of the Guru Vishram Vridh Ashram. “I’ve seen mothers in old and torn clothes, their bodies smelling and their hands and feet rotting and covered in maggots,” shares Dr. G.P. Bhagat, founder of the ashram. These abandoned elderly men and women lay starving on the streets hoping for someone to rescue them from their suffering. “I used to be sexually abused repeatedly, and when I screamed in pain, they hit and threatened me with more violence,” says Priya (name changed), a rescued child sex worker. Priya was abducted by traffickers and sold into a red-light area house before she was rescued by Guria led by Manju. For over two decades, Manju has been rescuing young girls forced into prostitution across the country. She has been shaken to the core seeing some of the most horrifying crimes that young girls have to undergo. “You can’t imagine the state of girls forced into sex work. The girls are given electric shocks and burnt with cigarette butts just to get kicks out of it. And if they get pregnant, the "owners" kick them repeatedly in the womb so that the child inside dies…If you want to see hell, it is here on this planet where young girls are sexually abused,” says Manju.Manju needs your help to rescue more young girls from forced prostitution and reunite them with their families. Donate now.Guria’s work over the yearsBased out of Varanasi, inarguably the holiest place in India, Manju and her organisation Guria, fights the sexual exploitation of girls, especially minors, by taking on the traffickers head-on, and rescuing and rehabilitating them.Started in 1993, Guria has rescued over 5500 persons from slavery, sex trafficking, and child prostitution so far. It has also been instrumental in shutting down hundreds of places that housed trafficked girls and putting scores of traffickers out of business and in jail.For instance, in 2005, a Guria-led rescue operation in Varanasi's red-light area led to the freeing of 49 women and girls, including minors. Many of them were kept against their will. Some of the traffickers were also arrested and tried. Since then, Guria has rescued thousands of young girls.Manju and her husband, Ajeet Singh began rescuing girls from Varanasi’s red-light areas and then working to stop the sex-trafficking of young girls within Uttar Pradesh and outside. The organisation’s aim is to eliminate the sex trafficking of women, especially minor girls, end second-generation prostitution and child prostitution, and rehabilitate women and girls who are rescued from the trade. Manju has faced violent backlash from the traffickers and other vested interests, but it has not deterred her from carrying on rescuing young girls from trafficking. Rescue and rehabilitationBesides rescuing girls trafficked for sex, mostly from low-income families, from across the country, Guria fights on their behalf in courts and also provides education, food, vocational training, and other facilities until they are united with their families. But because of a lack of funds, Guria is finding it difficult to rescue more girls and also take care of them once they are away from the clutches of the traffickers. Take the case of Sameena (name changed), who was abducted from Uttar Pradesh all the way to Telangana. Guria took it upon itself to rescue the girl with the help of its own work and also the authorities. After months of rehabilitation, Sameena went back to her family and even completed her education. Along with that, we focus on skill building and overall development of the children. We also focus on student’s overall wellbeing by conducting yoga classes and psychological counselling.

Education

Ek Pahel believes that the best way to give a better life to these vulnerable children is to strengthen the social and economic capacities of their mothers. We provide functional literacy to poor women, and training in various courses like stitching, knitting, beautician, Dona making, Henna designing, etc. In addition to this, we also started ‘Pukaar’ – Legal Counseling Cell for the women facing problems like domestic violence, acid attack, eve-teasing, property issues, etc.

Women Empowerment

We believe good health is foundational to a fulfilling life. Thus we prioritize preventive and curative healthcare through vaccinations (BCG, Polio, MMR, DPT), free sanitary pad distribution to girls and their mothers, health awareness through nukkad nataks, and regular medical checkups Our future plans include launching 'Doctor on Wheels,' a mobile van equipped to deliver healthcare services to underserved villages. This initiative will focus on women's health and hygiene, offering education, checkups, and medicines at their doorstep.

Ek Pahel started Ek Pahel Patshala school for underprivileged children in Agra in 2010. In the school we provide free of cost quality education, give nutritious one time meal, distribute books, bags, uniforms, stationery, focus on the childrens’ skill development. Initially only 30 children registered with us but with time, families living in slums realized the importance of education. Moreover, after seeing the academic progression of the students studying with us from their community the families got motivated to send their children to our school. Till March 2019 we had 350 students in the school but in the academic session 2019-20, 100 new children (belonging to families below poverty line), registered and now we are finding it difficult to accommodate the growing strength. We are constructing 4 new classrooms to support the strength of 500 students but are unable to meet the growing monthly expenses such as salary of new teachers, meal for children, vaccinations. We are also unable to meet the expense of books, benches, stationery and uniforms for the students. Therefore, through GiveIndia we seek you support to help and empower us to remove the barriers we are facing in providing education to these children who now dream to have a bright future. 
 To provide uninterrupted quality education to the growing number of children in our school, we are striving to garner funds from people in our network and small business houses in Agra and Ferozabad. We have started “Angels for Angels Child Education Support Scheme” wherein we request people to sponsor a child’s education for a year at Rs. 6000 and also request them to promote the child support scheme in their social network. By generating funds through the scheme, we are trying to meet teacher’s and staff salary, administrative costs and expenses of stationery. We approach clubs and social organizations to donate necessities such as books, bags, bottles for children. We have generated funds from corporates to build new classrooms and meet other infrastructural requirement. We are also organizing a large scale charity run - ‘Run for Her’ last held on March 8th, 2019 to raise funds for providing education to girl child. We are asking students doing internship with us to volunteer for teaching till we hire new teachers. Even after doing extensive promotion we still need funds to provide a conducive learning environment to the children and meet all the learning and teaching essentials. 
 Ek Pahel believes that ‘Quality Education’ is a key to empower children and remove poverty in a single generation. But we also know providing education to underprivileged children in a way that can be used as a life changing weapon is not easy. So to ensure this, we have built a holistic education system that aims to first inject the importance of education in the minds of not only these children but also of their parents. We then aim to provide a conducive learning environment taking into account all possible barriers to education that the children from marginalised background face. The barriers we address include lack of parental support, lack of motivation to study, health issues, physical and mental abuse at home, gender biases, pressure to get engaged in child labour, etc. We have created a well-rounded system of education that emphasizes on academics and also identifies the unique talent of every student and develop it into skill. We also believe that an empowered mother can raise empowered children so we educate and empower mothers of these children. We thus, strive to create a life changing impact not just in the lives of these 500 children today but 500 families and many more tomorrow.
