And the worst affected are the children who grow up in red-light areas and are subjected to constant abuse and violence. “The sight of a 12-year-old girl being gang-raped by a group of men near a house l haunts me to this date. I was filled with anguish and resolved to do something,” says Girish Kulkarni who has made it his life’s mission to rescue children from red light areas and give them a safe and secure childhood. In the last 3 decades Girish has saved over 1100 girls from a life of abuse in red-light areas, giving them a loving home, education and medical care. THE PROBLEMThe pandemic has hampered the education of children in Goa, especially from marginalized and underprivileged backgrounds due to the fear of the virus and Dengue. This has not only led to drop-outs from formal education but has also pushed children into forms of violence like child labour. To secure continuous access to education, El Shaddai seeks your support and has started vigorous efforts to educate at least 500 children despite COVID-19.El Shaddai is committed to providing basic education to children irrespective of their social or economic backgrounds. Due to poverty and without immediate assistance, many children - especially girls - will drop out and will never return, and will be subjected to violence and abuse. With basic education, these children will become first-generation learners. El Shaddai urgently needs help to continue to provide education to 500 children who are not able to attend school because of COVID-19 and if provided with support, they can go back to school and realize their dreams. 
 SOLUTIONEl Shaddai functions in a context where for many education is a lifeline to a better future. At present over two-thirds of our children come from streets, slums, and underprivileged backgrounds. The project will help poor children in mainstreaming into academic education that will make a positive impact realizing their full potential. A donation of ₹ 2,500 will cover all the educational expenses of a child in need for one month. The average cost of educating a child at El Shaddai is approximately ₹ 30,000 per year. In order to ensure that our children can continue their schooling, we need to raise money. Whether you can help 1 child or 10 or 100, every bit of support will count. 
 IMPACTEl Shaddai is doing everything we can to prevent this temporary situation created by COVID-19 from becoming a permanent barrier in our children’s education and lives. 2, 26,000 slum and street children are educated through slum and non - formal school education programs. With your support, another 500 children will be able to increase their level of education. This support will ensure that they come out of this COVID-induced lockdown without missing out on the possibility of education in years to come. Also, the learning gap created by the pandemic and post-pandemic circumstances will be as minimal as it can be.

BACK TO SCHOOL

Chimbel is one of the biggest slums in Goa, situated at the outskirts of Panaji City. 20 years back families migrated here from the neighbouring states and made this government land as their home. The men and women work as daily wage labourers or work as helpers, maids in the local houses. The community is poor and uneducated. They are deprived of basic education, healthcare facilities and good employment opportunities. 
 Tremara centre is working with women and children in this area. The centre has made it necessary that every child in the area attends regular school and thus helped every child to get an admission into formal school. It was not easy to convince the ignorant parents about the importance of sending their children to schools. Apart from formal schooling, centre also provides kids of nursery and KG with extra coaching. It also runs vocational classes like computer course, mehndi classes, stitching course etc for women and youth.Tremara conducts immunization every month for children and infants where approximate 100 children/infants are vaccinated. It also organizes health awareness programmes on issues like HIV, TB, family planning, malaria, save the girl child, etc. For the convenience of people, Saturday is reserved as an OPD day for the slum community 
 Working dedicatedly on the project, Tremara has admitted and supervised 150 children into the regular schooling system. This year, a total of 40 women and youth have benefited from the vocational training programme, out of which 20 women and youth are employed on a part time basis. Tremara is proud to be working with more than 130 women and hopes to reach out to a larger number of people with your support.

 Contribute towards development of Tremara Community Centre

There are estimated to be more than 18 million street children in India. A significant number of these children come from anti-social communities. These communities face widespread discrimination, compounded by illiteracy, malnutrition, health and social problems stemming from extreme poverty. This project will allow children from these uniquely marginalized communities in Goa, India to stay off the streets and thrive in mainstream school environments. 
 The project will enrol street/slum children in reputable schools around the city, sponsor their school fees, provide uniforms, shoes, school supplies, and nutritious packed meals. Additionally, all students in the Education Outreach Program will receive free health and medical care. Through these comprehensive support services, children will be able to stay off the streets and excel in school. 
 The project will provide 100 first-generation learners from marginalized communities with an excellent education and opportunities for holistic growth and development, which will put them on the path toward breaking the pervasive cycles of poverty in their slum communities.
