“They insert a candle in the vagina, fingers are inserted (in the vagina) and tortured, and if children don’t relent even then, they put chilli powder so that children will say “yes” because of the burning of the skin… There are teeth marks on their bodies, and their vaginal parts are burnt. “What will happen to them after me? I am 80+. I spend sleepless nights,” worries ex-Air Force officer, Group Captain AC Barua while talking about the future of the 28 destitute women under his care. “They have nobody in this world, sometimes they don’t remember their own names. They are absolutely alone,” he informs us as he goes from one room to the other meeting all the women who live at Seneh, the only home where they are loved and taken care of. After fighting for his country all his life, this octogenarian is now fighting to rescue homeless and abandoned women from dying on the streets. But he cannot do it alone. “Everyday I keep on getting calls from here and there. ‘Oh! there’s a woman lying here. Can you help?’ But I don’t dare to go and help because I don’t have the money. I don’t have the resources, our resources are very limited,” explains Gr. Capt. Barua who is lovingly called ‘Sir’ and ‘Deuta’ (father in Assamese) by the residents of Seneh. With your help, 80-year-old Group Captain Barua can fulfill his mission of rescuing abandoned and homeless women from dying on the streets, alone. Many times these are women with mental health conditions and considered being a witch due to superstitious beliefs and beaten up as a result. They are victims of domestic abuse or widow mothers who are considered to be a burden on the family. Group Captain Barua has not only rescued them from critical conditions, he has provided them with urgent medical care, food and above all, a free safe shelter where they can live with love and care. Among these residents is Sarala Kalita who fled to save herself from the tortures of her alcoholic husband only to face neglect and trauma from her brothers- and sisters-in-law. “Both my brothers and their wives urged my father to leave me somewhere as they didn’t want to take care of me anymore. One day my brother’s wife didn’t even let me have food at home. She just wanted me to leave and go away. So that’s why, my father got in touch with Seneh through someone, and handed me over to Sir to take care of me,” says Sarita who has found joy in living at Seneh. “Coming to Seneh, it felt like I got a new life altogether. Sir has given me a harmonium. I love singing. It makes me forget everything and takes me to someplace else entirely,” she adds. More women like Sarala can find their way to a loving home like Seneh. All they need is a little bit of your kindness. “It is difficult to make both ends meet”To sustain their daily expenditure, Capt Barua needs approx ₹3 lakh a month and arranging the funds is a mammoth challenge for the NGO. “Our expenses are growing day by day. Residents are growing older, their sicknesses are increasing. At times we have to give them special food. They require more care so we have to get more employees. About half of them require leading around, 1-2 has to be fed also. It will be very difficult to sustain it unless we get help,” he added. One act of your kindness can save these abandoned women, with no one in this world, from struggling on the streets to survive. "My son used to kick me when he was in my womb. Why make an issue when he kicked me in my old age?" reasons a very forgiving Shakti Dasi. The widow travelled 2300 kms from Tripura to Vrindavan after her only son violently beat her with a burning plank of wood and broke her knee one evening. She had to leave behind the business she had built with her husband who had died a few years back. Shakti ended up on the streets of Brindavan begging for food and shelter. But when Winnie Singh of Maitri saw Shakti in a frail state in tattered clothes, she brought her to the shelter home where Shakti gets food, care and medicines. What more, with Maitri’s intervention, Shakti reconciled with her son - and daughter-in-law, and now travels home to Tripura twice a year to spend time with her grandchildren. But she is not leaving Maitri, as this has become her family.Not every elderly widow who comes to Vrindavan after being abandoned by her family gets as lucky as Shakti. Many of them often end up living a lonely life and begging to survive on the streets. After being thrown out of their often abandoned by their own children and are forced to beg for food and shelter. “Through Project Jeevan, Maitri houses aging widow mothers in two ashrams in Vrindavan and Radhakund (Mathura), providing them with wellness and well-being. The programme also reaches out to widow mothers beyond the ashrams with fruit, milk and healthcare services,” explains Winnie Singh, co-founder and executive director, Maitri India.Save homeless elderly widows from begging on the streetsMost widows who make their way to Vrindavan are abandoned by their families, often after years of abuse. They come here hoping they will spend the rest of their days in prayer and devotion. But most live in impoverished conditions on the streets and in dingy rooms. EMPOWER PEOPLE is an organization singularly focusing on working with victims and potential victims of human trafficking (bride trafficking to be precise) and honor crimes against women. The organization is gradually taking the form and shape of a social movement, with a set of community-based organizations, activist individuals, and groups.It works to support law enforcement agencies and families of victims, in locating missing girls and conducting rescue operations. Empower People ensures a close follow-up of every rehabilitation process and has developed a mechanism to help track their well-being to ensure that the survivor does not fall prey to a trafficking trap again. The Organization forms a diversity group for each case to ensure her safety from being trafficked again and to mitigate the social stigma prevailing in the area. This group consists of people with different backgrounds from the same society who act as her guardians in the local community. Similarly, for trafficked brides living with their ‘husbands’ and children in destination areas, Empower People has designed a solution that involves organizing them into village communes that are managed and led by survivors themselves. The communes run skill centers for women, where they gather to associate with each other as trafficking survivors and celebrate the individuality of their being.

Bride trafficking has emerged as a veritable menace in the eastern states of India. Poor women from states like Assam, Orissa, Bihar etc. are trafficked into Haryana and Punjab by enticing them with dreams of a better future. Once trafficked, they are sold off as brides to anyone who is willing to pay, after which they are mostly subjugated to a life of slavery with basically no rights and are often abused, both mentally and physically. They are also often sold forward to other men repeatedly. Even after they are rescued, these women usually have nowhere to go as their families do not accept them due to prevalent stigma and they remain ostracised by the community at large.With the COVID-19 crisis, innumerable survivors were abandoned by their “buyer families”, and even from shelter homes and brothels, leading to an unprecedented scale of reverse migration towards Assam, a major source area for trafficking. Many women walked more than a thousand miles back “home” but they remain unwelcome because of the stigma and have no room for settling in or being accepted into the social fabric; leaving them prone to be re-trafficked or appropriated by the trafficking ring to become agents for trafficking of other vulnerable young girls in those areas.There is a dire need for creating a conducive environment for these returnees, addressing their rehabilitation needs and implementing preventive measures for women and girls who are especially vulnerable to trafficking in the area; which would include provision of education and skills for employment and financial independence.The target area of the project falls under the Char regions of Dhubri in Assam. These are regions of the river Brahmaputra that undergo repeated flooding and erosion which forces the dwellers to migrate every year thus never allowing them to settle indefinitely. They also lack access to proper education and amenities which has resulted in them being acutely marginalised and interminably vulnerable. This has led to high rates of trafficking in these areas. Hence there is a need for effective intervention in these areas. Empower People is implementing Project EASE in response to this dire situation, from 1st October, 2021 which will encompass the following activities:Education: The project shall engage at-risk members from the community who are especially vulnerable to trafficking and involve them in community participation and vocational training activities. The project shall also work towards re-enrolment of out-of-school girls into government schools, along with supplementary coaching for Class-10 girls.Assistance: The project aims to curb re-trafficking of returnees by empowering them economically and shall also attempt to rehabilitate and reintegrate them into the community. The project shall also provide legal and material assistance to returnees.Social Empowerment: Through the “survivors’ collective” of returnees, the project shall try to instil in the survivors a sense of solidarity and in the process, aid in their social acclimatisation with other members of the community, along with offering legal and psychological counselling on an individual and need basis.Employment: The project aims to provide vocational training to survivors and other vulnerable members of the community so they can develop financial independence, entrepreneurial spirit, and preferably set up their own businesses. This project will be implemented simultaneously in 3 blocks of Dhubri Assam.  (i)             in 1 year: Assistance to survivors, re-enrolment of survivors as well as vulnerable individuals into government schools, providing supplementary coaching to 10th standard girls appearing for board exams, and formation of CBO for LED bulb-making training.  (ii)            in 2 years: Formation of Mother’s Club, Girls’ Club, feminist perspective building for stakeholders and community leaders at local level, and continuation of previous activities.(iii)           in 3 years: Knowledge and skill building for CBO leaders on basic management, negotiation, conflict resolution, networking and advocacy skills. Training of capable youths in community journalism. Training of selected CBO members (BT survivors) in LED Bulb assembling and repairing along with home-based solar power generation system assembling and repairing.   Targeted Outreach - Direct beneficiaries - Indirect beneficiaries1st Year - 2000 -100002nd Year - 1500 - 100003rd year -1500 - 10000Once successful, this project would be replicated in 10 districts of Assam and around 15 districts of West Bengal. All these districts have similar geographical and socio-economic challenges.

The business of ‪marriage matching or ‪bride trade (trafficking) is not different from sex ‪trafficking because it treats women as a commodity to be sold to some unknown men and their purpose is not to find lifetime loving partners but to arrange a wife to be treated as a sex object, domestic worker and all-around slave. And the most painful part of the whole bride business is that it is also a new form of child marriage which has emerged in a wide scale. ‪Bride-Trafficking systematically violates‪ women’s ‪‎human ‪rights including the rights to life and security of persons. It places women in ganger of physical abuse and deprives them of bodily integrity. they are kept in villages or form houses and prevented from leaving or even communicating with their families back home. Their freedom from slavery and abuse is violated as a trafficked bride becomes the ‘slave’ of the man who “buys” her.
