For a mother who has spent her entire life loving and raising her child, being beaten and mercilessly thrown out onto the streets by her own son is too heartbreaking to overcome. But this is a common story among the elderly residents of the Guru Vishram Vridh Ashram. “I’ve seen mothers in old and torn clothes, their bodies smelling and their hands and feet rotting and covered in maggots,” shares Dr. G.P. Bhagat, founder of the ashram. These abandoned elderly men and women lay starving on the streets hoping for someone to rescue them from their suffering. If the children don’t relent even then, the abusers put chilli powder so that children will say “yes” because of the burning of the skin… There are teeth marks on their bodies, and their vaginal parts are burnt. When children stay in these conditions, it is painful even to hear,” says Lalitha SA of the Society for Participatory Integrated Development (SPID), while talking about many heart-rending stories of trafficked children in red-light areas. In over three decades, the team of SPID led by Lalitha, has saved over 3000 children from the red-light areas in Delhi, such as GB Road, and many from clutches of sex trafficking. Millions of women in India lack access to health care and menstrual health services - basic human rights that help them to lead healthy and prosperous lives. In India, owing to inadequate menstrual hygiene, roughly 60 percent of women are diagnosed with menstrual diseases and urinary infections every year. National Family Health Survey 2015-2016 estimates that of the 336 million menstruating women in India about 121 million (36%) women are using sanitary napkins, locally or commercially produced. Rest of them use unhygienic products like newspapers, cloths, rags, dried leaves, plastics, and wood shavings during menstruation.The issue is quite chronic in rural area wherein a 2015 survey by the Ministry of Education found that in 63% schools in villages, teachers never discussed menstruation and how to deal with it in a hygienic manner. Only 3% of women in rural India have access to sanitary napkins and early 23 million girls are forced to drop out of school.The ongoing pandemic has further exacerbated the situation. The panic buying in the initial stages affected the availability of sanitary napkins which had serious consequences on people living in small communities. 
 We aim on educating women about menstrual health and hygiene to abolish and break the cycle of taboo of menstruation. Awareness programs regarding women’s health will be aimed at educating women in government schools, local community in Delhi NCR region. Along with this we hope to bring about a change in the habit of using unhygienic practices and inculcate the habit of using sanitary products and practices. The women’s health education program will also aim to educate women/girls about health risk that arise due to poor hygiene.  
 Women in India are considered primary caregiver and have the power to change life of at least 4 girls or women around them. An informed girl today will be a strong woman tomorrow of the society and are going to change the world for the better. Providing women with sanitary napkins we aim to reduce the gap in accessibility of sanitary napkin and hygiene products. By promoting the use of sanitary napkins we wish to bring about change in habit of women who were ill informed and using unhygienic products like newspapers, cloths, rags, dried leaves, plastics, and wood shavings during menstruation. By having open conversation and education we can break the cycle of taboo that is propagated through inadequate information.

Empowering through Menstrual Health

In India, less than half of the children aged 6 – 14 years go to School. Many of them are subjected to working as Child labour owing to their parent’s poor socio economic condition. They are marginalized and socially excluded. Dejected, ignorant and aimless, most of them resort to unhealthy activities leading to unsafe atmosphere and become the cause of depletion in the law and order situation of the country and greatly hamper the progress of the nation. Furthermore, in the past 2 years, hundreds of young students from humble background were forced to quit their schools due to the Covid19 Pandemic. For these kids in the age of 5 to 15, this is a time of utmost importance. If they are not given a fair opportunity to study, they will not be able to able rise above the conditions of poverty. Education is their only way out, and if this time goes unutilized due to the pandemic, the impact will affect them and their families for lifetime.We want to amend that and give these kids a fighting chance to achieve their education. 
 With this aim in mind EM runs two primary level community schools, catering to about 250 children from the marginalized section. The respective Schools are located in Arthala- an urban slum of Ghaziabad, in the state of U.P. The children coming here belong to extremely low income group families who cannot afford to send their children to Schools. EM acts as a bridge between these out of School kids and the mainstreamed education system. The impact we look to make is to provide these kids with sustainable means of achieving education. From providing them with newer tools such as reading books, note books, devices, etc. Empowering minds will connect them in a more efficient manner with their beloved teachers. This will allow students to get seamless education with the fear of missing out in such an important age group, where mind is full of curiosity and can be directed in the right progressive manner. 
 At Empowering Minds (EM), we firmly believe that, each and every child, irrespective of his / her socio – economic status has the potential to grow up into a strong, healthy and a happy individual which in turn leads to a prospering and happier nation. The donations we receive will help us provide better access to books, supplies, and overall education. With our efforts we want to ensure that these children, especially from the marginalized society, do not have to stay away or struggle for acquiring, at least, the basic levels of education and health. This will in turn help them to have a chance at a better future for themselves and their families.

Empowering Kids: An Education programme for the Underprivileged Children

Children's nutrition has been a concern area in India and so is the concern in the communities where Empowering Minds is working. While there has been some progress in tackling malnutrition among children and women over the past decade, the improvement has been modest at best. This is despite declining rates of poverty, increased self-sufficiency in food production, and the implementation of a range of government programmes. The National Family Health Survey (NFHS-5) has shown marginal improvement in different nutrition indicators, indicating that the pace of progress is slow. Children who eat a balanced diet lay the foundation for a healthy and active lifestyle and this further lowers the risk of long-term health issues. Childhood is the most critical time for growth as well as for the development of the mind and to fight infections. So, it is very essential that the children get a good dose of energy, proteins, vitamins, and minerals. It is very important to follow that hygienic practices are followed while preparing and feeding the complementary food to the child; otherwise, it might lead to diarrhea. A well-formulated balanced diet is necessary for children and adolescents to achieve optimum growth and boost their immunity. A balanced diet, playing outdoors, physical activities for children are essential for optimum body composition and reducing the risk of diet-related chronic conditions later in life, and preventing any sort of vitamin deficiency.Counselling with the children at the Empowering Minds Education center brought to light the children's feeding pattern and two times meals that too not sumptuous meals and hence a lack of concentration in studies. Therefore, the midday meals were started at the centre for catering to the 250 children who come for the classes daily. 
 With the aim of providing Nutrition to the children coming to the centre in order to increase their concentration and cognitive abilities, Empowering Minds runs a Kitchen at the centre, catering hot meals to about 250 children from the marginalized section. The respective education centre is located in Sanjay Colony- an urban slum of Ghaziabad, in the state of U.P. The children coming here belong to extremely low-income group families who cannot afford to send their children to School. EM acts as a bridge between these out of School kids and the mainstreamed education system.The small Kitchen provides hot meals at lunch to the children. They eat in the centre itself so that the staff could monitor that each child has had full lunch and has not been taken home to feed others. To run the Kitchen and its items properly we seek support from benevolent donors so that these children be provided with equal opportunities for education. 
 As the saying goes, Healthy minds reside in a Healthy Body, the impact created by providing nutritious hot meals to the students will lead to their healthy bones and muscles. They will be able to concentrate on their studies and may develop an interest to achieve what they want to. The impact of nutritious food in the early years will give them better growth to become healthy adults and be a better workforce for the nation.
