The second wave of the pandemic has hit all sections of the society but the migrant and other daily wage workers who are still coping from the first wave's effects on their livelihood and family's health are still struggling. 230 million people have slipped back under the poverty line, years of progress done by the families have been reversed by a few months of the pandemic and the lockdown followed by it. This has resulted in most migrant workers struggling to reach home or provide safe shelters for their families. The families are living hand to mouth and some are not sure when they would receive their next meal. Along with this most workers are living in stress and uncertainty in this health crisis and do not have the necessary protective tools to ensure the safety and well-being of their families, practice Covid safety methods or detect early signs of Covid infection and find timely medical help. 
 Indus Action and Bhumi aim to support the most vulnerable families of migrant workers &amp; daily wagers through cash transfers to support<ol><li>Home isolation - Ensuring they have access to nutritious meals for their family - provide dry ration kits that will sustain them for 4 weeks</li><li>Enabling Covid-19 appropriate behavior- Provide face masks, soap, and thermometer to monitor any fever during the early stages of the infection.</li><li>Educating the families of migrant workers through our Helpline - We will raise awareness regarding safe community practices, vaccination, and its benefits and reduce reluctance towards vaccination. Our helplines will enable us to identify the unique needs of each family we reach out to and give them customized support and access to locally available resources.</li></ol> 
 Through this effort, Bhumi and Indus Action will provide stability and ensure no migrant worker or daily wager family sleeps hungry or is uninformed, or is unable to protect their family in these times. Our work on the ground will help us map the specific needs of each vulnerable family and build interventions required to support them until they can rebuild their livelihoods and protect their families. We aim to support 5,000 migrant workers' and daily wagers’ families so that they can survive the anticipated lockdowns and lack of livelihoods.

Our aim is to bring about a mindset change towards Skilling and improve lives and livelihoods ETASHA’s work is aligned with several of the Sustainable Development Goals of the UN including:·      SDG 3 – Good health &amp; Well-being ·      SDG 4 - Quality Education,·      SDG 5 - Gender Equality,·      SDG 8 - Decent Work and Economic Growth,·      SDG 17 - Partnerships for the GoalsThematic Areas ETASHA works in:We implement projects relevant for employment &amp; income-generation, and as of 31.03.2023 have had deep engagement with 57246 people including 16342 youth, 125 ITI Trainers, 38,889 school going adolescents and 841 aspiring women including 367 women who were trained for Entrepreneurship and 210 of whom set up self-owned enterprises Our mission is fulfilled by a team of over 100 team members operating from 10 centres and 15 schools through the following interventions: 3 kinds of Programs for Youth 3 Programs for Adult Women 6 Programs for Adolescents and thousand Multiple types of Programs for the Community. A. Programs for Youth Several programs are focused on young adults, who are in the age bracket where they can be legally employed (18+ year old) and are at least 12th Standard pass. All the programs include Placement in Jobs in organized industry after completion of training. i. Vocational Training and Placement for Young Adults (VTP) – Job-linked short duration training programs for 12 passed girls and boys followed by placement into relevant jobs in growth-oriented Service Sector Industry. The programs include a strong component of Employability Skills. The Placement ratio has consistently been above 70% for those completing the programs, and currently ranges around 80%. ii. Employability Skills Development and Placement (ESDP): Designed for students of Government-supported Industrial Training Institutions (ITIs) and Polytechnics the program covers soft and core skills training followed by placement for youth enrolled in technical as well as non-technical trades. This program is also customized for trade-specific, ITI-specific as well as employer-specific requirements. iii. Grassroots Entrepreneurship Program(GEP): The program identifies youth with the right skills and an entrepreneurial mindset, imparts business knowledge, trains in enterprise management skills, helps develop a business plan and arranges some initial funding thus helping youth to set up their small-scale enterprises. The program also mentors and handholds the young entrepreneur towards sustainability of the enterprise. B. Programs for Adult Women 1. Women Entrepreneurs Program: This program is focused on helping 35 to 65 year old women from underprivileged communities become socially and financially self-reliant and generate income as individual or group entrepreneurs. It involves training, handholding and mentoring the women to become successful owners of sustainable enterprises. 2. Adult Literacy Program: The objective is to provide basic level of empowerment with the ability to sign their names, read sign boards, newspapers and keep simple house hold accounts. 3. SHG Formation: Through the formation of Self Help Groups we seek to promote another level of empowerment for women, ie inculcating the saving habit and experiencing the power of collective working as a support group for meeting urgent financial needs of group members. .C. Programs for Adolescents The overall objective of the ‘Adolescent Well Being &amp; Success’ series of interventions is to guide and prepare adolescent girls and boys towards emotional, social and economic self-reliance. The programs are designed for students of class 8 to class 12 and are typically conducted in collaboration with Government, NGO-run or Low-budget schools meant for children from underserved communities. The programs offered are: 1. Life Skills Development and Counselling (LSC): This program includes a series of Life Skills workshops for students of classes 8th to 12th supported by individual face-to-face as well as on-line counselling through our Helpline by trained counsellors. 2. Scholastic Improvement Program (SIP) With a view to ensure children complete school education scholastic improvement programs in basic Reading-Readiness, English, Hindi and Math are implemented in collaboration with school managements. 3. Basic Computer &amp; Internet Usage Skills (IT) Starting from getting to know the key board, students are taken through a gradual process of learning and practice on Microsoft Suite, and Internet processes like mailing, search, google docs and use of the Google Drive. 4. Confidence building of students through participation in Public Events and Competitions- Students are trained, groomed and prepared to participate in school assemblies, special day functions etc. to build their confidence in their skills and abilities, hence in themselves. 5. Career Guidance (CH) - Career Guidance is provided to high school students in the form of workshops in school, either as Face-to-face workshops or as App-based Workshops (in case of students being reasonably proficient in computer or mobile based typing skills). 6. Coaching for Scholarships - This is offered particularly for students who are good at studies, keen on pursuing higher studies and are considered by the school management as good candidates for the National Merit and Means Scholarship. Projects in Government schools frequently also include Infrastructure Development, in case basic infrastructure like Toilets, Drinking water and Computer Labs need renovation/ upgradation. D. Further, Teacher Training Programs in Participative Teaching methodologies, Spoken English and Computer &amp; Internet usage, are also offered. E. Whole-community skill-development for employment &amp; income generation projects - Community-focused projects including some or all of the above interventions are undertaken to change the approach and thinking of an entire village or slum community with respect to employment and careers for girls and boys. Other interventions include events, skill competitions, Digital Literacy for Men, Capacity Building for School teachers, workers, staff and supervisors in Industry etc. F.  Corona Relief and Restoration and Build-back Programs - In the wake of the Corona crisis, we have worked with around 150 families to help them earn and support themselves with dignity through our Livelihood Restoration project. 125,000 hygienic 3-layered cotton masks produced by them were distributed to people in vulnerable communities, as well as to the Corona warriors in hospitals, schools and the police force. With a near-zero nest egg, the COVID 19 pandemic has brought those dependent on daily wages and earnings, back to the edge of poverty. Moreover, the high population density slums they live in makes them particularly susceptible to the contagion. 
 <ul><li>While our deep engagement with the communities we are engaged in, got Team ETASHA started on providing emergency support to these vulnerable families from the first week of the lockdown, we soon realised that while emergency relief was sufficient initially, income generation opportunities are required for sustenance in the medium term. </li><li>This project was, therefore, designed to help daily wage workers earn a living, provide food and protection for themselves and their families, and live with dignity.</li><li>The project model is a unique blend of ‘Remote Management of a Distributed Production Process enabling Aggregated Distribution of products.’ Production is undertaken by daily-wage-dependent families, logistics and marketing is undertaken by team members and beneficiaries of ETASHA’s programs living in the community, while senior team members monitor the project remotely.</li><li>The core strategy is to provide Relief to community members not just from a health perspective but by Restoring the incomes and dignity of every beneficiary. Through training and market linkages and creation of home-based enterprises, these beneficiaries will be encouraged to Rebuild their lives and Build-back the economy.</li><li>Production of Protective masks is being undertaken in view of the huge current as well as on-going demand for the next few years. Moreover, the required skills are commonly available in the community, and will get honed through this project allowing these families to build back their lives in the psot-COVID era.</li><li>Men, women as well as youth are engaged based upon their skills and willingness. Our effort is to engage only one person from a family, so as to involve more households and ensure distribution of earnings across a wider section of the community.</li></ul> 
 The project will have multi-dimensional impact:<ul><li>It will help provide protection from COVID 19 to the most vulnerable</li><li>It will provide opportunity for sustained income generation and restoration of dignity of the community members in a context where doles and charity are being handed out as short-term relief measures.</li><li>It will help develop and hone skills of the workers which will help rebuild their lives and enable them support themselves and their families.</li><li>It will create valuable assets within the community through the home-based enterprises and market linkages which will help the workers and the community transition smoothly to the post- COVID era and create a support system for them to tide over such emergencies in the future. </li></ul>

Livelihood Restoration and Build-back through Protective Mask-Making

In spite of the country’s focus on Skill Development and Vocational Training since 2009-10 the real impact on employability and employment of underprivileged youth has been marginal.  Low-income communities in the National Capital Region are full of young people who have completed 10th/12th class from government schools and are either:1.     Unemployed because they are ambitious and don't want to work as manual labour, but have received sub-standard education hence have no skills for employment in the organised sector. Such youth are particularly vulnerable to being misled.or2.     Underemployed, working as daily wage labour and at jobs available as unskilled helpers in the local community because they need subsistence money. Such youth and their families are likely to remain in the vicious cycle of poverty-malnutrition-ill health. The need to help such youth break out of the stranglehold of unemployment and underemployment is undeniable. Correspondingly, the need of the growing service sector in the National Capital Region (as in most of the country) for young, energetic school educated youth with some basic skills for entry-level jobs is huge, and remains unmet. ETASHA's Training and Placement Programs are designed to connect the two for mutual advantage. 
 The B- SMART Online Job Readiness Program caters to the urgent need of under priviledged youth to work and earn in the Corona- driven scenario (lack of mobility and social distancing norms). The Program covers Selling and Customer Service Skills,Mobile-based working,Art of Communication,Reality of work, andTechnology readiness under COVID-19 conditionsThe online program will be delivered by trainers engaging small groups of young people through smart phones from their respective homes. Approximately 200 hours deliverable in 2 months with flexibility of timings built into the delivery process The programs are specifically designed for youth from underserved communities, and blends the advantages of on-line delivery with the critical need for face-to-face interaction, counselling and mentoring. The methodology is highly interactive, experiential and participatory, enabling development of skills, attitudes and values relevant to a wide range of jobs in the organised sector. 
 Quantitative measures of output include ·        Enrolment of 80 youth in the Vocational Training Programs·        Successful completion of the program by at least 60 youth (75% of enrolled trainees). ·        Placement of at least 45 youth (around 75% of successful completions) in organised sector jobs. Qualitative outputs include a positive change in behaviours and skills of trainees including:·        Understanding of the etiquette and common practices in the world of work·        Ability to manage anger and deal with conflict·        Time Management·        Improved hygiene and grooming·        Increased social confidence·        Increased ability to communicate in English·        Competency in computer usage·        Competency in using the internet

Unemployment and underemployment are major problems affecting today’s youth and society. The effects of these are most acutely felt in low-income communities. 
 We believe that every young person has the potential to succeed. All it takes is quality training and a nurturing environment. We thus strive to empower underprivileged youth by giving them access to quality training, mentoring and equipping them to be job ready, with the right skills, attitude and mindset for work.  	We do this through the following programmes: -Vocational training and placement-Employability Skills Training-Employability Skills Training for Youth in ITI-Life Skills Training-Career Guidance-Training of Trainers In addition to training, we aim to impact the ecosystem of the young person by engaging various stakeholders in the community and creating an enabling environment for youth to take charge of their own futures. 
 On the youth:-Steering youth away from aimless wandering, potential drug abuse and crime to becoming trained and employed .-From low self-confidence to thinking “i can and i will”-From short-term orientation to developing a vision for one’s life- trainees begin to think in terms of a planned career path as opposed to a job for subsistence. On the families:-For families whose monthly income is between Rs. 5000/- to Rs. 7,000/- a regular salary more than doubles the family income. -Better bargaining power for girls within the family- Daughters with an income that enables them to be independent have more say in decisions regarding their own future. -Better education of younger siblings -Improved nutrition levels of the whole family On the Employer:-An attitude of striving for growth- this means reduced attrition and high quality performance in the workplace.The impact on the whole community is slow but sure. As we reach out to more youth within a community, the multiplier effect will make our work easier and the impact more significant
