We work with over 180 member organisations and over 1700 activists across 110 cities in India to ensure the protection of companion animals, farmed animals, and those in captivity. We investigate the conditions under which animals are farmed for food and advocate for policy changes to improve these conditions. We go to court to secure the rights of animals in captivity. We educate people on the perils of animal agriculture. We mobilise volunteers and activists across the country to respond to animals in crises. We are now building an emergency response network to resolve human-animal conflict and bring justice to the animals harmed by humans.

In the past few years, the news media, largely led by the efforts of animal activists and the changing collective moral compass of our society, have increasingly been reporting cases of violent crimes against animals. Fortunately, many of these reports were made possible because of video recordings in this age of citizen social media vigilance. And yet the idea persists that crimes against animals are not a major issue in India. The reported cases of everyday violence faced by animals show that violence is an integral part of the lives of animals. Crimes against animals, such as violence or cruelty, is a vast subject. The predominant targets of violence are free street or stray animals, but working and companion animals face their own share of brutal violent crimes. The legal protection afforded to working and companion animals is insufficient and limited to the colonial idea of "unnecessary suffering". But street animals – beyond the scope of usefulness – have limited to no protection at all. By focusing on crimes against animals in the public eye, we intend to shed light on the impunity with which crimes are committed against animals publicly. 
 Every form of animal violence committed is ultimately rooted in the view that animals are lesser beings. This disparity in treatment is also seen within the legal framework where animals are treated as the property of humans. Their value is reduced to their market rate, with no consideration of their intrinsic value as sentient beings. This is further highlighted by the usage of terms like 'destruction' and 'vermin'. There is a need to tackle this inequality and ensure equal consideration of animal interests along with human interests. Through our work we aim to change the conversation from cruelty to one of widespread violence. At present, all forms of ill-treatment, from keeping an animal tied all the time to cold-blooded murder, fall under the umbrella of 'animal cruelty'. However, this term is woefully inadequate to encompass the severity and intentional nature of the crimes. Our work also examines the legal contexts within which the term 'cruelty' is used and recommends revised nomenclature that does better justice to communicate the magnitude of the offenses. 
 Animals feel. They think, they know, they suffer. FIAPO fights for animals' rights to freedom and joy.We aim to serve as an effective advocacy tool both for activism and law and policy change, to push the legal barrier of 'unnecessary suffering' to a higher moral compass, and to inspire and motivate a new generation of animal activists to work effectively to prevent crimes against animals.

Emergency Response towards Crimes Against Animals

Millions of stray dogs live on the streets of India and are definitely an integral part of India’s landscape. Unfortunately, fear and ignorance have led many Indian citizens and officials to see street dogs as nothing but a nuisance and to seek eradication using inhumane methods such as poisoning beating, relocating . But for every dog killed, another typically comes in to take over that dog's territory. Clearly relocating or killing dog is not the solution.There is a dire need to address people’s lack of awareness on how to behave around dogs, and their fear of dog bites and rabies. There is also a need for the mass vaccination of street dogs against rabies, for proper garbage management, and for properly monitored ABC programmes.FIAPO, through its Rabies Free India campaign, has been attempting to do exactly that. Using the multi-stakeholder model, we are working with government authorities, local NGOs and animal activists to ensure that the different aspects of conflict are addressed separately.. We are currently running the campaign in 4 districts - Trivandrum, Ernakulam, Chandigarh and Lucknow for the following interventions:<ul><li>Scientific, state-run ABC</li><li>Mass anti-rabies vaccinations for street dogs</li><li>Education on dog-bite and rabies prevention</li><li>Counselling of victims of dog bites</li><li>First aid and community engagement</li></ul> 
 Educating children on dog bite prevention and rabies is of utmost importance. In Kerala, Chandigarh and Uttar Pradesh our education programmes on dog-bite and rabies prevention have led to a comprehensive improvement in students’ knowledge about rabies, and a major positive shift in the physical manner in which students approached dogs. The sessions were conducted in an interactive manner - where the students could engage in role-play and learn about minimizing negative interactions with street dogs. 
 The sessions were conducted on the following topics:·        Understanding a dog’s body language, and dos and don’ts around dogs·        Post dog-bite care·        What rabies is, how it spreads, and how it can be prevented.Similarly, the health department approved compulsory counselling for victims of dog bites in the major government hospitals of the districts. Our counselling sessions gave the patients the following:·        Information on what rabies is, how it spreads and how it can be prevented·        Understanding a dog’s body language, and dos and don’ts around dogs·        Emotional support to heal from the incident, and to leave the hospital with a neutral or positive attitude towards street dogs.The sessions were conducted in an informative and empathetic manner, with due regard for patient’s well-being. Through the campaign, we are also growing the number of people who help dogs in distress. Building a group of caregivers helps engage the community to develop a positive relationship with street dogs.
