Stray dogs and other animals on the streets live a life of acute deprivation. The most painful part is the manner in which they meet their end–lonely and helpless. While some may sustain grave injuries after being run over by vehicles, others are at the risk of starvation and illness. Often, people ignore their plight as they are strays. But not Sudha Narayanan. It’s been almost a decade since Sudha decided to set up a hospital and shelter home for stray dogs and other animals. Sudha’s NGO Charlie’s Animal Rescue Centre (CARE), since its inception in 2013, has saved the lives of thousands of stray animals with urgent trauma care and medical help. Sudha has shouldered a significant amount of the cost of treatment for these animals for a decade. The NGO’s rescue helpline receives numerous calls throughout the day. CARE’s team brings the rescued animals to its trauma care centre, where the sick and the injured are admitted and taken care of. With the help of proper medical care the animals are nursed back to health. The animals who are no longer fit to survive on their own due to serious injuries are kept in the NGO’s shelter home which is currently home to over 150 stray animals including dogs, cats, birds etc. The struggle to stay afloatWith their rescue helplines ringing off the hook and the number of helpless animals increasing with each passing day, CARE is finding it difficult to keep going. “The number of animals we save and shelter are increasing continuously. And if we don't get the support we require, unfortunately these animals will also be left without anybody to look after them. We need a huge amount of money for critical care medicines, for animal care items and for the essential food needed for the sick and injured animals. Most families are surviving on just rice and salt which is provided by the government. We would address the issues of livelihoods of street vendors, healthy urban living, sanitation &amp; sustainable urban life in Sambalpur city in Odisha. Urbanization is unbelievably rapid in Odisha. The stretch of road from Ainthapali to Deheripalli in Sambalpur is dotted with nearly 450 street vendors. They prepare street food on the spot and some sell fruits and vegetables. At least 450 vendor households and more than 2000 lives face livelihood insecurities. They lack adequate infrastructure for the storage or preparation of food items. Their living and working conditions are extremely unhygienic. This jeopardizes the health &amp; hygiene of the city and all the citizens.Congestion of roads in Sambalpur, the biggest hub in western Odisha is becoming uncontrollable and is choking the mobility of the entire city. Encroaching Street vendors, coupled with haphazard vehicle parking on the main roads has led to severe traffic chaos in the city. The street needs to be given back to the citizens, the street vendors a hygienic place for their business and the people to eat healthy food. Sambalpur needs basic amenities to be planned and provided for with the partnership of civil society. 
 FIDR has devised an integrated, systematic plan to address the challenges that are related to road encroachment, traffic congestion, parking, and health &amp; hygiene in Sambalpur. The plan includes initiatives for which we would request the government, corporates and other resources. The detailed plans, ideation and thought leadership would be provided by FIDR in association with the civil society of Sambalpur. Some of the plans include <ol><li>The creation of a Common Facility Centre. The vendors could be segregated into clusters and provided with infrastructure to prepare food in a more hygienic and professional environment. This will increase the demand for their product and enhance their income manifold.</li><li>Innovations in parking: Rotary parking zones could be created for commercial establishments so as to create space for pedestrians and cyclists.</li><li>Green the environment: New pathways could be created with lush greenery which will help in minimizing pollution. Green zones could be constructed in Budharaja foothills. </li></ol> 
 Street vendors will be rehabilitated and be given better, earmarked infrastructure (with storage facilities) to operate their small businesses from. The increase in their income is expected to be 3X in the first year.The infrastructure facility (Common Facility Centre) will help in providing hygienic food and better sanitation to the people of Sambalpur.Increased engagement of unemployed youth, from nearby low-income rural areas, in the vending centre will reduce the unemployment rates.Giving back the main road to Sambalpur: The mobility in the city will be eased due to the de-congestion of the city’s main road. The road will go back to the citizens where they can use the road safely for children, senior citizens and physically challenged citizens.The project will start Sambalpur and Odisha on an important path towards combating air pollution and improving public health and move one step closer towards being an exemplar of sustainable urban development for other cities and emerging urban areas.
