In the dark and dingy alleys of red light areas, injustice, pain and suffering run rampant. And the worst affected are the children who grow up in red-light areas and are subjected to constant abuse and violence. “The sight of a 12-year-old girl being gang-raped by a group of men near a house l haunts me to this date. I was filled with anguish and resolved to do something,” says Girish Kulkarni who has made it his life’s mission to rescue children from red light areas and give them a safe and secure childhood. In the last 3 decades Girish has saved over 1100 girls from a life of abuse in red-light areas, giving them a loving home, education and medical care. He has further supported over 20,000 children with a better life.Sadly, Of the 250 the children rescued from abuse and exploitation, around 70 of them are HIV positive. I had even seen my friend’s 15-year-old sister and 70-year-old grandmother being forced to do sex work for the price of a cup of tea”, recalls Girish. “I started by merely feeding and teaching children of sex workers initially with the intention of giving them some respite from the horrors of life of abuse in red-light areas. Gradually more and more mothers started coming to me and asked me to take their children away, even if it was just for a couple of hours,” he further adds.The work that Girish started in his youth gradually grew to become a movement, with many more joining his cause. His NGO Snehalaya to date has transformed the lives of millions. Girish’s work is crucial for the survival and safety of vulnerable children of sex workers. But no one wants to help women with mental illnesses,” says N Vanitha Rengaraj, chairperson of Sharanalayam.Sharanalaym’s ‘Jothi’ is a sanctuary for over 100 women facing mental challenges. We want to help people with disabilities to reach main stream education and have employment opportunities. Approximately 1% of the Karnataka population consist of children with special needs. This aggregates to a whopping 5 lakh children and out of this, the survey indicates that only 1% of the children with special needs go to school and complete secondary education. Rest 99% of the children with special needs never attend school and remain illiterate thus leading to increased dependency on others for livelihood. Our aim is to ensure the remaining 99% children also get the basic training and become ready to go to a mainstream school. 
 To address this problem, Fourth Wave Foundation has been working with the Karnataka government on a program named as “School Readiness Program - SRP”. This program runs from centres located in government selected locations providing –<ol><li> Physiotherapy and medical assistance to children with disabilities. </li><li>Coaching on skills needed to be self-sufficient and self-reliant for their day-to-day activities. </li><li>Training to be ready to join the regular school stream. </li></ol> This program has been successful in increasing the enrolment of children with special needs in schools from 1% to 21% (In approximately 3 years).  To further enable the vision of educating every child in India, we have come together to raise funds to fulfil below 2 objectives<ol><li> Support existing SRP in Dharward, Karnataka. </li><li>Form “Mini School Readiness Program (Mini SRP)”. We intend to set up 2 Mini SRP centers in rural Karnataka which will cater to the Children with special needs. </li></ol> Rural Reformers Rural Reformers are a group of like-minded volunteers who envision inclusive education for every child in India. Rural Reformers supports Fourth Wave Foundation’s Project Nanagu Shaale through volunteering and fundraising for the Mini-School Readiness Centres that serve as bridge schools to facilitate inclusion. 
 The impact of these Mini School Readiness Program centers run by Nanagu Shaale has been instrumental in setting a benchmark on how School Readiness Program centres can enable mainstreaming. Inclusion of Children with Special Needs i.e.: (severely disabled and mentally challenged) students and enabling their all-around development through an Inclusive Education approach. Handhold these SRP centers and the respective govt schools at cluster levels to enable inclusion through school readiness programs, art-based therapy, alternative skill development, etc. Student empowerment enables their retention within schools, Teacher Training Programs to facilitate Inclusive Education, Positive Parenting to help encourage child participation and inclusion in the community and Community Awareness programs to change mindsets and find solutions to many factors that lead to exclusion.

Support Mini SRP

In India alone, an estimated 6% of the population, or roughly about 70 million are people with disabilities. When it comes to children, according to the best estimates of international agencies, approximately 98% with disabilities in developing countries do not attend schools. 
 Nanagu Shaale facilitates a bridging program for Children with Special Needs (CWSN), to enable them to attend mainstream government schools. The program is run by trained teachers with an individualized education plan, for each child. The program focuses on five key areas - nutrition, hygiene, social interaction, active learning, and physical activity. The programs are run in the government school setups. It also provides support for CWSN through, remote consultation, physio-therapy, art based therapy, and alternate pursuit. 
 In just six years, Nanagu Shaale took up the enrolment of children with disabilities from just 1% to 21% in Government Schools across 14 districts in Karnataka. This alone directly impacted the lives of 60,000 children. We trained 2000 teachers to work with Children With Special Needs. We worked with NGO’s and Disabled Peoples’ Organisations (DPO’s) in empowering them to address the need for inclusive education and mainstreaming of Children With Special Needs. We have been working with various Govt. Departments with a mandate to build their capacity and provide technical training to address specific programs for Children With Special Needs including sports, games, excursions, talent shows, recreation, etc.

Nanagu Shaale - School Readiness Program (Bridge Schooling Program for Children With Disability)

Kerala is often described as the 2nd Punjab in the case of children’s drug use habits and is in the race to become the drug capital of India. As the Kerala Police reported at the High Court of Kerala, drug abuse among school students is on an alarming rise. Children are at the epicentre of the problem, not just because of the usage, but also getting affected and abused by drug users around them. As per reports from the survey in 2018, we have seen a 288% increase in drug usage and the most vulnerable have been proved to be the children of the state. The average age of initial exposure to gateway substances and illicit drugs is around 11- 14 years. At the national level, about 14.6% of people (i.e. about 16 Crore people) are current users of alcohol. 
 Project VENDA encourages and advocates the engagement of healthy pursuits as an effective antidote to the menace of drug abuse among teenagers and young adults. Engaging them in arts, sports, music, and theatre gives them the rush they seek and serves as a coping mechanism for their anxiety. Exposing them to various pursuits that also alter their brain chemistry in a healthy and desired way without any harmful side effects is seen to work effectively.VENDA Cup, a yearly football tournament is one such initiative. The tournament focuses on mainly 3 things<ol><li>Creating safe places to play for children</li><li>Giving them professional training and football experience</li><li>Promoting Women football</li></ol> 
 <ol><li>In 10 years, creating 10 grounds with basic infrastructure and maximum safety, where children can be engaged safely after schooling hours</li><li>Equip at least 10000 children with a complete football kit which will help them pursue their football dreams</li><li>At least 50% of girls participated in the tournament</li></ol>
