Help Disabled Children with Shelter & Care

For a mother who has spent her entire life loving and raising her child, being beaten and mercilessly thrown out onto the streets by her own son is too heartbreaking to overcome. But this is a common story among the elderly residents of the Guru Vishram Vridh Ashram. “I’ve seen mothers in old and torn clothes, their bodies smelling and their hands and feet rotting and covered in maggots,” shares Dr. G.P. Bhagat, founder of the ashram. These abandoned elderly men and women lay starving on the streets hoping for someone to rescue them from their suffering. But most people walk past them without a second glance. “Like this”, Dr. Bhagat explains, “many elders die on the roads.”Since 2003, SHEOWS (Saint Hardyal Educational and Orphans Welfare Society) has rescued over 10,000 elderly people from the streets and given them a home with care and support. The Guru Vishram Vridh Ashram has a dedicated rescue team that saves the elderly from the streets and gives them immediate medical care upon their arrival at the home. To tend to the multiple health complications of the seniors, the home has a medical facility with doctors and nurses, a physiotherapy unit, a pathology lab, a digital X-ray monitoring machine and a pharmacy to provide 24-hour care to older adults anytime they require assistance, even during emergencies. Dr. Bhagat prioritizes the health of the seniors and ensures that they receive three balanced meals a day based on their precise health requirements. Need for the fundraiserThe humanitarian mission of SHEOWS is making an impact in the area, as more and more people are being rescued and brought to Guru Vishram Vridh Ashram. To meet the financial costs of running the home, SHEOWS needs support to continue providing the residents with all the facilities that they need. In the dark and dingy alleys of red light areas, injustice, pain and suffering run rampant. And the worst affected are the children who grow up in red-light areas and are subjected to constant abuse and violence. “The sight of a 12-year-old girl being gang-raped by a group of men near a house l haunts me to this date. I was filled with anguish and resolved to do something,” says Girish Kulkarni who has made it his life’s mission to rescue children from red light areas and give them a safe and secure childhood. In the last 3 decades Girish has saved over 1100 girls from a life of abuse in red-light areas, giving them a loving home, education and medical care. He has further supported over 20,000 children with a better life.Sadly, Of the 250 the children rescued from abuse and exploitation, around 70 of them are HIV positive. I had even seen my friend’s 15-year-old sister and 70-year-old grandmother being forced to do sex work for the price of a cup of tea”, recalls Girish. “I started by merely feeding and teaching children of sex workers initially with the intention of giving them some respite from the horrors of life of abuse in red-light areas. Gradually more and more mothers started coming to me and asked me to take their children away, even if it was just for a couple of hours,” he further adds.The work that Girish started in his youth gradually grew to become a movement, with many more joining his cause. His NGO Snehalaya to date has transformed the lives of millions. Girish’s work is crucial for the survival and safety of vulnerable children of sex workers. We are a cross disability non-profit organization set up in 2017 with a vision to empower people with disabilities to live with independence, confidence and dignity, by the Jindal brothers, Mr. Ankit Rajiv Jindal, and Mr. Pratik Rajiv Jindal. They both have 100% vision impairment owing to a genetic condition, viz: retinitis Pigmentosa, - a degenerative eye-disorder that leads into blindness. Being persons with disability themselves, they have first-hand knowledge of day-to-day challenges of dealing with various technological, infrastructural, and attitudinal barriers, and therefore are empathetic to the needs of millions of persons with disability.Despite their disability, both, Ankit, and Pratik, have led highly successful, confident and independent lives. They embraced assistive technology early in their lives and were able to complete their education in mainstream schools &amp; colleges. They have post-graduated in Master of Business Administration from India’s Top B-Schools s namely, Faculty of Management Studies (FMS) and Symbiosis Institute of Business Management (SIBM) respectively. They are working for leading information technology firms and between them have over 25 years of aggregate corporate experience. Both are regarded as Role Models and are recipient of several prestigious recognitions including NCPEDP Helen Keller Award, CNN-IBN Veer, Asia Pacific Champion etc.For over 15 years, They have been actively working on several initiatives supporting the development agenda for people with disability. With the participation at the United Nation’s Conference of State Parties at New York, as well as the National Committee of the Rights of Persons with Disability (NCRPD), has nurtured their understanding &amp; expertise around strategic issues that impact the lives of persons with disability from an inside-out perspective . In addition, their experience of starting and working with two social enterprises namely Diversity &amp; Equal Opportunity Center (DEOC) – a consulting organization that enables corporates on building inclusive workplaces and Kickstart cabs – a mobility start-up designed for people with disabilities; gave them confidence to develop and deliver solutions to help the disabled overcome barriers.Our founders have been widely recognized for their stellar contributions in the field of disability awareness and assistive technologies. They have been relentlessly raising awareness and easing campaigns in private as well as government sector. At the same time, they have contributed to several national-level strategic discourses, including Rights for Persons with Disability ACT (RPWD Act), Sustainable Development Goals (SDG’s), data on disability, inclusive elections, Census, employment, and technology. Did you know? Most deaf people remain marginalized in society and do not get opportunities for education, employment, and entertainment because no content is available in sign-language . According to the World Health Organization, about 63 million people in India have a disabling hearing impairment. Among these, approximately 10% of the deaf are anticipated to use sign language as a primary mode of communication. Unfortunately, most of us (non-deaf people) don't understand sign-language and there are only about &lt;500 certified Indian sign language interpreters in India. This limited supply, which is grossly inadequate to suffice the huge demand, and therefore makes it unaffordable, unavailable and unscalable for the deaf to access these services. As a result, they remain excluded from all growth &amp; development parameters and remain less educated, less employed and therefore less utilized. 
 Our non-profit aims to resolve the scarcity of interpreters with our digital sign language translator, which will convert speech/ text into Indian Sign Language in real-time. We, in collaboration with IIIT-B, have been working on research and development for over 2 ½ years. We have developed a functional proof-of-concept with a word-bank of 300 sign-words. It is being built on state of art technologies such as artificial intelligence, natural language processing, 3-D animation, etc.Unlike others, our project has a special focus on the beneficiaries that is people who are deaf and that is why it is being developed in consultation with users of Indian Sign-Language, our characters very human like, and have a special focus on facial expressions and the grammar of this unique language. Our word-bank have referenced the official dictionary released by the Indian Sign Language Research and Training Centre. Consequently, deaf users are responding well and have scored it extremely high on understandability, clarity, and familiarity in our user-study.You can support our initiative to scale-up this solution from the existing 300 words to 10,000 words. Approximately, the cost of making one sign-word is ₹ 600, which includes complex AI programming, 3-D animations and synthesizing in a mobile/laptop app. 
 We’re confident that our AI-powered solution will open doors for mainstreaming of thousands of deaf people, including:·       Make higher education accessible with real-time interpretation in classrooms for students who are deaf and make books available in ISL.·       Make workplaces more inclusive as sign-language interpretation could be provided in meetings and zoom calls, training etc.·       Enable them to consume multi-media content like YouTube, Podcasts, Netflix etc.·       Make services such as banking, voting, etc. more inclusive for the DeafProtect and promote the ISL, which is a critical aspect of deaf culture.

As a result, several children suffer, often resulting irreversible disabilities, as they are not able to get the right medical help when they need. 	 
 With a vision to enable health for all, targeted to children with medical conditions and those from underprivilege background, Friends For Inclusion in collaboration with Dr. Priyanka Modi Halan- MBBS, DNB, MNAMS, Fellowship in Neonatology (Indian Academy of Paediatrics) Paediatrician and Neonatologist - in Mumbai has conceptualized Project Jeevan - an emergency fund  that will provide medical interventions to those children with serious medical conditions and whose families can't afford the treatment. This fund will support children and families in times of crisis and provides direct financial assistance for Life saving surgeries and medical interventions, treatment for chronic or life-threatening conditions and Better access to critical medical supplies and other healthcare interventions as required. This fund is being constituted in memory of Late Mahesh Modi – father of Dr. Priyanka Modi Halan.
