Karthik (name changed) is a man who has been through the worst life has to offer. After faithfully serving his family for several years, his wife took his children and abandoned him, leaving him with no property or loved ones to comfort him. In this desperate situation, Karthik attempted the unthinkable. Timely action prevented the loss of his life but left him with debilitating injuries. Ashokan needed more than just immediate physical aid and he needed it quickly. A wise and compassionate doctor referred Karthik to Gandhi Bhavan where his world was changed. He found peace among the other abandoned elderly at this refuge for the vulnerable where his medical, nutritional, and social needs were met with the help of a dedicated team of doctors, nurses, cooks, and peers. He now lives life with the light of hope in his eyes. From having nothing and no one to being surrounded by people who cherish his presence, Karthik has something to live for. Your support has truly made a remarkable difference, and we're thrilled to share some heartwarming insights from the visit. 🙌😊 Field Visit Date: 25/08/2023Field Visit by: Roshni Ramesh, Associate Manager, Online Giving Delivery Team - Give Visit Summary:We visited the Gandhi Bhavan center in Kollam, Kerala, which is a home for over 1200 abandoned elderly, destitute women, children, people with disabilities, and individuals facing psychosocial challenges. The founder, Mr. Somarajan, aptly refers to it as a big family where everyone lives together in harmony. The founder, along with his family, also resides on the same campus itself. Within the campus, there are separate buildings for elderly women and men. While a new building for elderly men is under construction, the existing facilities are thoughtfully designed to provide comfort and care. Each room is equipped with beds, TVs, and cupboards. Nurses, doctors, counselors and a superintendent are available 24/7 to take care of any medical needs of the inmates. Each building has a library, a well-equipped medical room, and a pharmacy covering allopathy, ayurveda, and homeopathy, catering to the varied preferences of the residents. Inmates are also provided with vocational training units such as tailoring, allowing them to acquire new skills and build their self-esteem. A delightful surprise was the tea shop run by the inmates, right in the heart of the campus, fostering a sense of independence and community involvement. Gandhi Bhavan holds annual elections among the residents, with a president, vice president, secretary, and more being elected by the residents themselves. These elected inmates actively participate in the decision-making process, working alongside the organization's trustees and management. Meeting the beneficiaries was a deeply moving experience. Some are bedridden, battling various physical and mental challenges, while others are fit and active. Most of them have been abandoned by their own families and have come to Gandhi Bhavan as a last resort. During our interactions with the beneficiaries, there was a prevailing sense of happiness and contentment. Various cultural activities and events are held throughout the year for the inmates. One new inmate shared, "My son used to abuse me, and I was locked up in a toilet for many months before coming here. Now I can sleep peacefully without any fear. I get good food to eat, all essentials, medicines, and I am happy now." 🌟🙏Your continued support plays a pivotal role in helping Gandhi Bhavan cover the rising food and medical expenses and offer these abandoned elderly a life filled with dignity and happiness. 🏡🌟

Due to covid pandemic our supporters are in financial crisis which has affected the smooth functions of our rehabilitation homes. So We need financial assistance to provide food, medicine, clothing, medical treatment ,counselling ,equipment for the disabled and the education to children for the 1550 inmates of Gandhibhavan

Gandhibhavan started Pain and Palliative Care Home since 2008. This Centre registered under Orphanage Control Board with Regn.No.2396 is functioning in Gandhibhavan. Bed-ridden members of the Gandhibhavan family are residing in the centre and utmost care is provided.Another Pain &amp; Palliative Care Home is functioning at Valakam, in Kollam and registered with Kerala Orphanage Control Board (No.OCB 2550).Palliative care provides advanced care planning and a support system to help you live a life that is as active, fulfilling, and as pain-free as possible. Bedridden patients usually stay in bed for long periods, presenting several motor problems caused by immobility, such as reductions in muscle mass, bone mineral density and physical impairment, resulting in a long recovery process. Other problems may arise, such as pressure sores, muscular weakness/atrophy, muscular shortness, respiratory complications, blood circulation difficulties and bone demineralization, which can quickly develop and result in long recovery processes. The numbers of bed ridden patients are increasing per day in Gandhibhavan rehabilitation homes. The ministers, MLAs, MPs, District Collectors, and Govt department officials ,NGOs and Social workers are referring the bed ridden patients to Gandhibhavan for caring and support.The poverty of family is the main reason to refer the patients. Due to poverty the family is unable to manage finance for the care and treatment of bed ridden patients. Also some families are treating the patients as burden to them and abandoning them. But Gandhibhavan is providing them life time care and support with basic amenities. We are not receiving any grant from government or any other funding agencies for the care and support of bed ridden patients. The public donations are helping us to manage our pain and palliative home. It is not sustainable. We are admitting patients from anywhere from India. In the Covid situation we had faced critical situation to manage our pain and palliative care home like other homes. The major problem is the lack of permanent financial supporting agency.  In this context, we request you to allow financial assistance for smooth functioning of pain and palliative care homes for bed ridden patients.

 Gandhibhavan was already selected by Ministry of Social Justice and empowerment Govt of India  as best institution in India for providing better services to senior citizens. Our dream is to bring our pain and palliative care home for bed ridden patients as a model pain and palliative care home in India. If provided financial support we can rehabilitate more bed ridden patients . We can give admission to beneficiaries from anywhere India. It will encourage and motivate other social workers, government, students and public to support bed ridden patients for their better care.

Support for food, cloth and medical treatment of lifelong bed ridden patients of Gandhavan Pain and Palliative Care Home

Gandhibhavan International Trust provides schooling to the needs of over 224 special needs students with our special school that caters to the special needs of the children with cerebral palsy, autism and other types of mental and physical disabilities since 2006. The school serves as a learning and developmental resource for these students who comprise of inmates of Gandhibhavan and children coming from poor and impoverished families living within a 60 kilometre radius of Gandhibhavan.At the special school the children are provided with a range of developmental skills that help them to have employment and lead better and dignified lives. They are also provided infrastructure like air conditioned smart classrooms, physiotherapy rooms and are trained in extracurricular activities like arts and sports along with vocational training like handicraft making. The students are taken on educational tours to places of importance in a school bus that is specially designed to cater to their special needs.The school has a vision of serving as a model for society and other such schools in the state, by providing an uplifting change in the lives of the students and their families. For this the school has a proactive PTA Association and advisory board.Presently 15 special teachers, 8 care takers &amp; 3 drivers are working in the special school under department of Education, Government of Kerala. The Grant-in-aid sanctioned every year by the Dept. is only for the payment of their honourarium. The ratio of teacher and student is 1:8. So Gandhibhavan has engaged other staff and helpers for day-to-day activities of the School like providing education, care and support of children on Part time and Voluntary basis. The school class structure is Care group, Autism Class, Preprimary, Primary I, Primary II, Scondary, Pre-Vocational I, Pre-Vocational II, Vocational I, II and III. The teachers and care takers are providing education, care and support to students on a day to day basisWe need to find and educate more poor beneficiaries who are isolated in their homes within 60 km of Gandhibhavan International Trust and bring them to school for education. But the present condition of the school building is inadequate and poor quality .So, high-level building and systems are required to provide modern learning to students and bring them to the mainstream of society. The school also needs to expand to accommodate more students 
 The solution of the project is the construction of new school building with smart class rooms and advanced infrastructure for special school that caters to the special needs of the children with cerebral palsy, autism and other types of mental and physical disabilities. . This year 224 students are studying in the school. Our aim through the construction of new school building is to provide residential education, care and support to more mentally and physically challenged children (Approximately 500 mentally challenged children) in Kollam &amp; Pathanamthitta Districts. Presently they are staying in houses without getting education due to poverty and helplessness of family members. Gandhibhavan has two school buses and two vans for transporting the students within a radius of 60 km from various parts of both the districts. Free Education, Accommodation, Counseling, Medical Check-ups, Therapies, Entertainment activities and Skill Development training are the benefits to such children.

Construction of New School Building for Mentally Challenged Children

Due to poverty and mental disorder the men and women and children are burden to in some family .They have been leaving them to street , bustand, park and railway stations. So they are forcing for beggary to meet their daily life. The kidnapped children are exploiting by mafias for beggary. This is a social problem and it should be addressed by the Government, community and social organization. The police and other stakeholders have been identifying the victims of beggary from the bustand , street, and railway station..etc and taking them to Gandhibhavan home since 2005. Gandhibhavan is rehabilitating them by providing all basic amenities .The expense is meeting through public donation and there is no fund from government and other agencies. Due to this, the shelter home for the persons engaged in begging is functioning with care home for men and women. If have support from government we can provide care and support more beneficiaries and cover whole district of Kollam. In this context, Gandhibhavan proposes a shelter home for persons engaged in begging in the Kollam district. Presently We are providing care and support to 53 persons engaged in begging  
 Gandhibhavan will set up facilities to accommodate the beneficiaries in Gandibhavan campus. Ministers, MPs, MLAs, District collector, Officials from social justice department and Police ..etc can refer the beneficiaries to the home . After admitted the home beneficiary will be undergone for medical check up and counselling.The shelter home will be provided all basic amenities like food, medicine , medical check up and vocational training…etc .Also Gandhibhavan will be appointed the staff based on the guideline ministry of social justice department. The staff will be taken efforts to empower the beneficiaries and re integrates to the families.
