“They insert a candle in the vagina, fingers are inserted (in the vagina) and tortured, and if children don’t relent even then, they put chilli powder so that children will say “yes” because of the burning of the skin… There are teeth marks on their bodies, and their vaginal parts are burnt. 113 million adolescent girls are an invisible population in India. Due to socio-cultural practices and conditioning, they are denied autonomy and a chance to discover their potential. In order to amplify the voice, leadership and agency of adolescent girls, we must question, visibilize and unlearn oppressive and unequal gender narratives that we exist in.  To enable that, The Gender Lab creates experiential learning spaces and journeys, for diverse groups of adolescents and youth in urban and rural India. We currently do this within the following 3 verticals : <ol><li>Empowering Adolescent Girls : </li></ol><ul><li>Avanti Young Women Leadership Program : Through a school based intervention in Mumbai and Jind (Haryana) we are building 21st century skills among 13-14 year old adolescent girls to challenge gender stereotypes in their community and emerge as leaders. </li><li>मैं बोलूँगी : Through a community based learning program, we are engaging 13-14 year old girls in villages of Jind District in Haryana around barriers to their education and future ( like violence, discrimination and lack of agency) and enabling learning around being strong advocates for themselves and other girls in their village. </li></ul><ol><li>Empowering Women: </li></ol><ul><li>The Gender Lab Fellowship : a 10-month program for those who identify as women, aged 20-25, who are passionate about working with adolescent girls. The fellowship is hosted in Mumbai and Jind (Haryana). During the journey, each fellow facilitates workshops and mentors 300 adolescent girls through a leadership journey ( AYWLP) while going through a parallel journey that builds self awareness, sisterhood, perspectives on gender &amp; feminism and more. Currently we have a vibrant alumni community of 55 fellows from across India. </li></ul><ol><li>Redefining Masculinities: </li></ol><ul><li>The Gender Lab Boys Program : Through a school based intervention, in Mumbai, we engage adolescent boys to explore different aspects of masculinity and challenge gender stereotypes. Encouraging the boys to share, express, and care, while creating a trusted and safe space for the same, is a core principle of the engagement.</li></ul><ul><li>How We Raise Our Boys:  A workshop based intervention in 10 regional languages for educators and teachers working with adolescents. Through collaborations with regional gender experts, the program has workshops on masculinity, gender, sexuality and related topics. The aim is to enable the re-imagination of classrooms as a gender inclusive space. </li></ul>TGL has worked with 45000 adolescent girls, 7000 adolescent boys, 200 schools, 55 fellows and 350 educations across Mumbai, Delhi, Jind and Goa. in 2020 TGL was awarded The <a href="https://asiafoundation.org/2020/04/15/the-asia-foundations-lotus-leadership-awards-2020/" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" target="_blank">Lotus Leadership Award  for the work done towards engaging men &amp; boys. </a>

Avanti Young Women Leadership Program School: Anjuman Islam, Mumbai CentralProject Topic: Knowledge Building about Neurodiversity among Teachers The group observed that students who don’t perform well academically are often discriminated against and punished rather than attended to more carefully. They decided to spread awareness amongst the teachers about neurodiversity- what falls under it, how to identify neurodivergent students and support their growth. They performed a skit for 15 teachers in their school and made their point about how it’s okay for every child to grow differently. School : Shiv Gurukulam, JindProject topic: Awareness on bullying The group identified that the children in their school face bullying but lack the language to identify it. After explaining 4 types of bullying researched from the internet with the help of the facilitator, the group conducted a zine story book activity through which participants shared their experience of bullying and one action step they will take to reduce bullying in their classroom. मैं बोलूँगी Program Village name: Nirjan, JindProject topic : Unpaid care work The participants had chosen this subject because they had to do a lot of household work before going to and after coming home from school. Some girls were made to leave their studies completely while some had to leave between the school hours to complete household chores.&nbsp;Through <a href="https://anchor.fm/the-gender-lab" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">मैं बोलूँगी podcast </a>created by TGL (Story name: घर के काम and काम तो काम होता है), the girls understood that it is everyone's responsibility to do household chores, but the entire burden is put on the women and girls of the house. They prepared a play and went to different areas of their village to perform it. They gave suggestions like parents should not call their girls home from school for any work, schools should impose rules and penalties against this so that everyone can understand that girls' education is as important as boys, etc. They were able to reach 45-50 people in their village through this.
