Most of Sharanalayam’s children have ‘V’ as their initial. The ‘V’ stands for ‘Vanitha,’ the founder of the NGO. For the orphaned and the abandoned kids, Vanitha is simply ‘Thaiamma’ (mother). One of them is V Dhanushya, 18, who is studying nursing. “Thaiamma has taken care of me since I was six months old. She promised the mother that she would take care of the baby. “The baby hardly had any strength. She used to be called ‘insect’ by the people in the neighbourhood. The doctor said that she might not survive beyond a month. But she did for over a year, under my care. I named her Shakthi,” recalls Vanitha.Sharanalayam has come a long way since that time, with hundreds of children being taken care of by the NGO in the last two decades. Many have become professionals in various fields, including medical care, engineering, counselling, banking, etc.Sharanalayam needs urgent support to take care of 80 children under its care. “What will happen to them after me? I am 80+. I spend sleepless nights,” worries ex-Air Force officer, Group Captain AC Barua while talking about the future of the 28 destitute women under his care. “They have nobody in this world, sometimes they don’t remember their own names. They are absolutely alone,” he informs us as he goes from one room to the other meeting all the women who live at Seneh, the only home where they are loved and taken care of. After fighting for his country all his life, this octogenarian is now fighting to rescue homeless and abandoned women from dying on the streets. But he cannot do it alone. “Everyday I keep on getting calls from here and there. ‘Oh! there’s a woman lying here. Can you help?’ But I don’t dare to go and help because I don’t have the money. I don’t have the resources, our resources are very limited,” explains Gr. Capt. Barua who is lovingly called ‘Sir’ and ‘Deuta’ (father in Assamese) by the residents of Seneh. With your help, 80-year-old Group Captain Barua can fulfill his mission of rescuing abandoned and homeless women from dying on the streets, alone. Many times these are women with mental health conditions and considered being a witch due to superstitious beliefs and beaten up as a result. They are victims of domestic abuse or widow mothers who are considered to be a burden on the family. Group Captain Barua has not only rescued them from critical conditions, he has provided them with urgent medical care, food and above all, a free safe shelter where they can live with love and care. Among these residents is Sarala Kalita who fled to save herself from the tortures of her alcoholic husband only to face neglect and trauma from her brothers- and sisters-in-law. “Both my brothers and their wives urged my father to leave me somewhere as they didn’t want to take care of me anymore. One day my brother’s wife didn’t even let me have food at home. She just wanted me to leave and go away. So that’s why, my father got in touch with Seneh through someone, and handed me over to Sir to take care of me,” says Sarita who has found joy in living at Seneh. “Coming to Seneh, it felt like I got a new life altogether. Sir has given me a harmonium. I love singing. It makes me forget everything and takes me to someplace else entirely,” she adds. More women like Sarala can find their way to a loving home like Seneh. All they need is a little bit of your kindness. “It is difficult to make both ends meet”To sustain their daily expenditure, Capt Barua needs approx ₹3 lakh a month and arranging the funds is a mammoth challenge for the NGO. “Our expenses are growing day by day. Residents are growing older, their sicknesses are increasing. At times we have to give them special food. They require more care so we have to get more employees. About half of them require leading around, 1-2 has to be fed also. It will be very difficult to sustain it unless we get help,” he added. One act of your kindness can save these abandoned women, with no one in this world, from struggling on the streets to survive. At 80+ Gr. Capt. Barua cannot sustain Seneh on his own. “With folded hands, I appeal to all. Please come and please help us. Let us help these people, these old people who have nobody in this world. They are dying. Gramarogy is a registered non-profit secular voluntary organization established by a group of similar minded local youth who were inspired by the teachings and thoughts of a national progressive social thinker (Rashtriy Sant) Tukdoji Maharaj and has been active in the rural development in one of the most interior areas of eastern parts of Vidarbha. Established in 1998, Gram Arogya, since its inception has been working amongst rural poor and marginalised communities especially tribal to help them access their entitlements especially forest based livelihood, regeneration of natural resources through watershed treatment activities especially water conservation, forest regeneration, preserving and regeneration of biodiversity using provisions of progressive laws namely PESA 1996, BDA 2002, FRA 2002/2008/2012, community natural health, quality education, awareness of various programs and policies, capacity building and organic farming with a view to evolve community development processes. The underlying principle of all our work is the sustainable development from gender perspectives to evolve empowerment processes amongst communities intervened.Gram Arogya works with a clear vision of empowering communities by facilitating promotion of their community level institutions so that people are able to manage their own development and empowerment processes. It works with rural communities especially tribal focusing on their Gram Sabha - (the most empowered statutory Gram Panchayat level organisation recognised by law today in India) through which it introduces all development activities. Specifically while working on progressive policies/act which have much needed potential of developing indigenous communities such as PESA, BDA, FRA, MGNREGA it facilitates promotion of legal institutions such as hamlet level Gram sabhas, Section 4 (1) e committees, Biodiversity management Committees, etc. It has also worked with tribal to set up their MFP based micro-enterprises, SHGs of women and federations. The existing and promoted institutions are given need based capacity building inputs, awareness, statutory information and their entitlements so that they acquire capacity to manage their own development affairs. It also participates with the similar minded networks of CSOs especially working for entitlements of tribal communities and their NRM based livelihoods. We are member of couple of such CSO networks who work on these themes.

The Scheduled Tribes and Other Traditional Forest Dwellers (Recognition of Forest Rights) Act 2006 popularly known as FRA 2006 is a landmark decision in empowerment of tribal communities in India. The two important provisions the act have is the Community Forest Rights (CFR) whereby the entire ownership and management of forest around the village/hamlet is given in the custody of Village Gram Sabha and secondly the landless and or those forest dwelling individuals/families who have been cultivating the encroached forest lands before 2005 are given the land for agriculture purpose to help them earn their livelihoods.Taking advantage of the governments resolve to involve locales towards management of forest resource through recognition of community forest right, the project intends to use an area of people managed forest. Through this project the organization intends to take up actives in 2 villages only, that government has recognized right to more than 500 villages over their neighboring forests. Successful implementation of this project shall lead to large scale replication in other villages as well. It will be equally important to involve the government authority in the program me to ensure larges scale reliability. 
 There is a need to work on following programs and activitiesi. Share the developed CMPs to all concerned departments through District Level Convergence Committee (A committee specially set up by State Government of Maharashtra as per the FRA Rules to help Gram Sabhas to access the funds from various line departments to implement CMP. The GR was passed in Oct 2016).ii. Capacity building of Gram Sabhas and its executive committees formed under section 4 (1) e of FRA in understanding their roles and responsibilities in empowering communities.iii. Management of CFR with technical expertise and back up.iv. Livelihoods based on forest regeneration, agricultural intensification, water conservation, MFP based micro –enterprises and thus regenerate the biodiversity,v. Empowering GS for trading local MFPs.vi. Facilitate formation of BMCs and work on natural/organic farming, aforestation with strictly local tree / plant species and fisheries to regenerate natural habitation and biodiversity.vii. Facilitate all processes towards sustaining the development and empowerment processes amongst tribal villages 
 <ul><li>The project beneficiaries’ shall be aware of the provisions of the forest right act and the benefits and the responsibility bestowed upon them by the act. Hence there will be greater sense of responsibility in protection conservation and management of forest resource on which their livelihood is dependent</li><li>The CFR areas grated to the villages shall have grated species diversity, the current forest blank will get reduced, and community shall offer protection to the areas and adopt controlled grazing and resource use regime</li><li>Crop improvement program me and enrichment of backyard kitchen garden shall reduce dependency of local on forest for food and medicinal herbs there by reducing the pressure on forest and providing it with n opportunity to recoups to its original glory. This shall also ensure food and nutrition security to the local inhabitants</li><li>Sustainable harvesting of NTFP under the management pan develop for the CFR Ares shall provide direct tangible economic benefit to the local inhabitants.</li><li>As a result of convergence of government schemes like MGMRGA there will be increase in opportunity for wage earners to claim work under EGS for productive works for themselves and the community as well.</li></ul>
