For a mother who has spent her entire life loving and raising her child, being beaten and mercilessly thrown out onto the streets by her own son is too heartbreaking to overcome. But this is a common story among the elderly residents of the Guru Vishram Vridh Ashram. “I’ve seen mothers in old and torn clothes, their bodies smelling and their hands and feet rotting and covered in maggots,” shares Dr. G.P. Bhagat, founder of the ashram. These abandoned elderly men and women lay starving on the streets hoping for someone to rescue them from their suffering. The Guru Vishram Vridh Ashram has a dedicated rescue team that saves the elderly from the streets and gives them immediate medical care upon their arrival at the home. To tend to the multiple health complications of the seniors, the home has a medical facility with doctors and nurses, a physiotherapy unit, a pathology lab, a digital X-ray monitoring machine and a pharmacy to provide 24-hour care to older adults anytime they require assistance, even during emergencies. A number of Dalit communities live in Jaitipur in Vaishali, Bihar. Dalits were forbidden from using the public hand pump and had to resort to drinking unhealthy and often diseased water just to survive- a disgusting situation because others in the village had clean water freely available to them.

When a number of Dalits attempted to use the pump, people from more dominant communities forcefully stopped them. A group of those targeted came to Gramin Evam Nagar Vikas Parishad (GENVP), where the organisation arranged a meeting with the village elder, discussed the problem and successfully built three more hand pumps to provide safe drinking water to all.

Dalits were traditionally regarded as untouchables owing to their low position in the caste system. Even today, around 37% of Dalits survive on less than $2 a day and 45% are illiterate. Weak economic conditions and discrimination forces most children from Dalit families to abandon their education. 
 This project provides financial help to children from poor Dalit families and the chance to receive a real education. We are running informal learning centres at various places where children are taught and given counselling to prepare them for mainstream schools.We give parents advice and ensure that children live in a healthy, encouraging environment which keeps them motivated to attend school regularly. Also vocational training is provided to help boost their self-confidence in the face of discrimination. 
 This project aims to work with 450 Dalit children who don’t attend school and pave the way for mainstream education.By donating just Rs. 1,856, you can help empower a Dalit child and also support against archaic caste-based discrimination.

For a long time, Dalit communities have faced discrimination and marginalisation by the rest of society. Due to their weak socio-economic background, one in three Dalit households do not have basic hygiene and sanitation facilities.

It is also important for us to train those living here how imperative it is to use and drink hygienic water as well as being sanitary.
