Gramrajya Vikas Evam Prashikshan Sansthan, a grass root level voluntary organization, has been working in the Karauli, Jhalawar, Bundi and Jaipur districts of India for the past 10 years, to spread awareness amongst underprivileged communities about child rights, woman and child health, girls' education, and child-centric livelihood. Children work throughout the year and the average age of children entering work in the mining sector is 14. They also work long hours, averaging over eight hours a day. A significant number of girl child in this region drop-out before completing their elementary education. Prime reason for such a situation is the absence of qualitative and safe environment at school level and lack of awareness in the community on the importance of education, migration and early marriage etc. When causes of children dropping out from schools are considered, disinterest of the child appears to be one of the reasons when considered superficially. But deeper consideration reveals that such a disinterest is because of inapt role play by the remaining two stakeholders. Teachers don’t teach properly in school while the community does not play its role of monitoring and supporting school processes in appropriate manner. In both the cases the root cause is the absence of required sensitivity and capacity. While teachers don’t behave with children and educate them in child friendly manner, community members are not aware of the importance of education and the role that they can play as members of School Management Committee under the RTE Act.
