And the worst affected are the children who grow up in red-light areas and are subjected to constant abuse and violence. “The sight of a 12-year-old girl being gang-raped by a group of men near a house l haunts me to this date. I was filled with anguish and resolved to do something,” says Girish Kulkarni who has made it his life’s mission to rescue children from red light areas and give them a safe and secure childhood. In the last 3 decades Girish has saved over 1100 girls from a life of abuse in red-light areas, giving them a loving home, education and medical care. Human trafficking in India is a horrifying crisis. Thousands of victims, primarily women and girl children, are exploited in red-light areas. Over 10,659 cases were reported between 2018-2022, but experts say that these numbers are likely a fraction of the reality due to underreporting, yet they still do expose the magnitude of the crisis. Girls make up 71.4% of missing children in India and a large number of these girls end up at red-light areas. Sex trafficking is particularly gruesome, with girls as young as 12 sold for as little as a few thousand rupees.

About Gubbachi:Founded in 2015, Gubbachi is a Section 8 company working towards the educational inclusion of marginalised children - typically from migrant families, as well as community interventions connecting migrant families to benefits and entitlements.Why Gubbachi Exists:The decision to migrate to a big city is one born out of distress, not choice. Drought and debts typically push families out of their homes in rural India, in search of livelihoods. In the city, these migrant communities have little or no access to education, healthcare and basic amenities.Children from these communities are unable to attend school on account of multiple barriers - from physical access, existing learning deficits and language/cultural barriers. Even if they are able to attend school, non-learning in under-resourced government schools is a further dampener. This leads to poor school outcomes and ultimately - to dropouts.The new National Education Policy (MHRD 2020) acknowledges that over 30 million children still remain out of school in India. In a modern economy, this only perpetuates the cycle of poverty for the family.We argue that this is as much of an urban crisis as it is a rural one. Each interconnected program in our Education portfolio supports the marginalised child in the city on their journey through schooling. Our Community programs assist the families with healthcare, documentation and with accessing other welfare benefits.

Since the last few days rains have lashed Bangalore flooding areas like ORR-Sarjapur Road. For many families this has created a logistical nightmare!For the poor communities in these areas it has become a matter of survival. Their homes are inundated with water. The roofs made of recycled carton boxes and old cloth are soggy and dripping through. Their food rations are now soiled with rain and sewage water and not safe for consumption. They have no where to cook, buy potable water or stay dry.The basic requirement of food, water and shelter has once again become a matter of grave concern for many poor migrant families. Beyond this, due to the disruption, many daily wage labour are now unable to work - certain activities like soil digging, rag picking, gang work for construction, etc has come to a grinding halt.So, there is little scope to earn, buy and eat.<img src="https://cfstatic.give.do/6f819156-ee4b-474b-b5c3-375af19eea50.png" width="396" />

Bangalore Flood Relief - Around Sarjapur Road

The recent pandemic locked millions of children out of schools. Children already on the fringes were further pushed out of the learning process. A recent study by Azim Premji University shows that children have slipped 3 to 4 grade levels. With no access to learning, marginalised children face the brunt of learning regressions. Already under-staffed Government Schools are under-prepared to handle learning regressions. This will have far reaching impact on life chances of children in years to come. Thirteen year old Suresh, a migrant child was a Class 7 student when lockdown was announced. For months his Government School was shut and there were no workable online options. This meant that Suresh was fast loosing what he had learnt in previous years.   While our other programs were working in community learning spaces, Suresh and his peers at our Host Govt. School were left in the lurch. It is a serious learning crisis that stares at us which needs our immediate attention. 
 Recognising that this would have serious long term impact on children’s life chances, School Learning Program (SLP) is being implemented in 3 government schools to impact 200+ Grade 4-7 students with specialised teachers. Now Suresh and all his peers are learning everyday – engaging with Languages, Maths, Science and Social Studies – and getting back up to speed, with specialist teachers. ●     Enabling Grade-level learning for children in Grades 4 to 7 enrolled in three Government Schools impacting 200+ children.●     In the absence of state sponsored mid-day meal program, ensuring lunch for all children to enable learning from 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.●     Ensuring availability of qualified and trained subject-teachers, on need basis, to supplement the understaffed Government Schools. 
 Ensuring grade-level readiness for 200+ children studying in Grades 4 to 8 in Government Schools.

UNLOCKING LEARNING FOR CHILDREN

With the current second wave of the pandemic, livelihood of many migrants in our cities is at risk. This in turn has direct impact on their ability to provide for basic needs for themselves and their families. Life seems to have come a full circle. We are in the same situation that we were in March- April last year (2020). With the impending lock-down, migrant families are again at the risk of food insecurities.In this wave neither can they go back to their villages (pandemic is rearing its head in the villages as well) nor can they stay (due to lack of minimum work) 
 Last year Gubbachi had provided food relief to 25,000+ individuals. Respecting the dignity of the daily wage earner, Gubbachi, with your help, provided one-month's ration.In our education intervention, Gubbachi has been working with 500+ underserved families for the education of their children. In the first wave of relief we are targeting support for these 500+ families. This year we are following a two pronged approach:1. Provide one-month's grocery for a family of 4. The kit includesRice 25kgs, Masoor dal-3 kgs, Toor Dal-3 kgs, Gram Dal -3kgs, Sugar- 3 kgs, Oil- 3ltrs, Soap-3 pieces, Washing soap-3 pieces, Salt- 1 kg, Chilly powder - 250 gms, Dhaniya Powder- 250 gms, Turmeric Powder - 250 gms.Cost per kit per family for one month- Rs.2,500/=2. Cash transfer into bank accounts for families to meet expenses like gas/coal/kerosene, rental, water, etc. As last year, this year as well, cash transfers are only for families with Bank Accounts. Cost per family per month - Rs. 5,000/=  
 Provide immediate food security to the families to stem reverse migration.Provide cash support to meet the basic needs of the family while they tide over the lockdown and start work again.

Stemming Reverse Migration by Ensuring Food Security

Everyone of us knows at least a few among our friends and family who have been affected by Covid-19. With the second wave taking us by storm our health systems are reeling under the stress and enormity of the crises. There is a never ending need for patients to be connected to the Health system. In the meantime, while they are waiting to get relief they need oxygen cylinders, Oxygen concentrators, ambulances ...sadly even hearse services. Even more acute is the problem for the underprivileged with huge information asymmetries. 
 For the past one-year Gubbachi has been working very closely with the Mercy Mission program for humanitarian aid for Covid relief. We, at Gubbachi, are extending all the support required by the team to reduce the chaos and suffering on the field.Mercy Mission's following programs have consistently alleviated pain and suffering on ground.Mercy Helpline: Available 24/7 receives the distress call and routes it to respective verticals. Several volunteers and recruited staff manning the helpline. Mercy Oxygen: With an of 600+ cylinders available from the previous campaign last year during Covid first wave the same are currently being recycled but the demand for oxygen has increased manifold. From supporting several hospitals to assisting individuals in distress all are being assisted. The inventory for oxygen Cylinders and concentrators are being added to meet the demand.Mercy Ambulance: Seven Ambulances are running free of cost for the poor, two of which have the capacity to be turned into well-equipped ICU on Wheels. With the increase in the number of Covid19 cases, one of the repercussions being an exponential increase in the calls to our Helpline, there is a dire need to step up and strengthen the system of triaging patients. In this regard ambulances juxtaposes between home and hospital for a patient suffering from hypoxia and other Covid related symptoms. Ambulances are also being provided for hearse serviceMercy Plasma: Conduct antibody tests and connect donors to those in need.For Hospital Bed or other related queries: the back end team coordinates with BBMP, hospitals and other war rooms to help out in this regard.
