Help Disabled Children with Shelter & Care

For a mother who has spent her entire life loving and raising her child, being beaten and mercilessly thrown out onto the streets by her own son is too heartbreaking to overcome. But this is a common story among the elderly residents of the Guru Vishram Vridh Ashram. “I’ve seen mothers in old and torn clothes, their bodies smelling and their hands and feet rotting and covered in maggots,” shares Dr. G.P. Bhagat, founder of the ashram. These abandoned elderly men and women lay starving on the streets hoping for someone to rescue them from their suffering. But most people walk past them without a second glance. “Like this”, Dr. Bhagat explains, “many elders die on the roads.”Since 2003, SHEOWS (Saint Hardyal Educational and Orphans Welfare Society) has rescued over 10,000 elderly people from the streets and given them a home with care and support. The Guru Vishram Vridh Ashram has a dedicated rescue team that saves the elderly from the streets and gives them immediate medical care upon their arrival at the home. To tend to the multiple health complications of the seniors, the home has a medical facility with doctors and nurses, a physiotherapy unit, a pathology lab, a digital X-ray monitoring machine and a pharmacy to provide 24-hour care to older adults anytime they require assistance, even during emergencies. Dr. Bhagat prioritizes the health of the seniors and ensures that they receive three balanced meals a day based on their precise health requirements. Need for the fundraiserThe humanitarian mission of SHEOWS is making an impact in the area, as more and more people are being rescued and brought to Guru Vishram Vridh Ashram. To meet the financial costs of running the home, SHEOWS needs support to continue providing the residents with all the facilities that they need. This includes constant care and round-the-clock medical attention, nutritious food and maintaining a hygienic environment to keep the seniors in comfort and good health. “We received a distress call saying that a blind girl is being held captive by a woman and is being forced to beg. Our volunteers were able to rescue that girl and bring her to the Blind Welfare Society home for girls. We cared for her and educated her. Today that girl is a senior government official”, says Asha Bhola, President, Blind Welfare Society (BWS) as she recalls how her organisation has been able to transform lives.BWS has been a ray of hope for 40 such blind girls, many of whom have been abandoned by their families owing to their visual impairment. Sadly, the care, shelter and education for blind girls come at a cost, and BWS is unable to keep its work going. If they don’t receive education, they will remain uncared for. They will continue to be ignored by not just their families but even by society at large. Whatever I am today is only because of the education I received. But sadly, every blind girl is not as fortunate. Handimachal is a not-for-profit organization established in 2009 with a vision to create an inclusive community for children with special needs by informing, treating, training, empowering, and creating opportunities towards maximizing the quality of life of persons with disabilities. A team of young therapists dedicated to the cause, use a multidisciplinary approach to meet the rehabilitative, medical, psychological, educational, and vocational needs of the child using a lifecycle approach. Aware of the prevalence of disability and the dearth of services for rehabilitation. Handimachal provides free services to individuals across the state and conducts awareness camps, and advocacy campaigns, and liaises with the government, not-for-profit organizations, and schools to create awareness and build a discourse around inclusion. As our work continues, the number of children seeking treatment also increases every month. If provided with the resources, we plan to expand our services over the next five years to increase our outreach.

Currently, one of our bigger donors is retiring and will not be able to support us as consistently as before. And we require your help to continue to maintain the current structure and aid us in this deficit and time of crisis.The deficit was covered due to the following reasons:The speech therapist shifted to part-time with a reduction in salary.The physical therapist resigned and was not present for one month till the new hire. No increments were given to staff for the past 2 years.The Occupational therapist and Administator is currently working part-time with a reduction in pay due to deficits.
