“We received a distress call saying that a blind girl is being held captive by a woman and is being forced to beg. Our volunteers were able to rescue that girl and bring her to the Blind Welfare Society home for girls. We cared for her and educated her. Today that girl is a senior government official”, says Asha Bhola, President, Blind Welfare Society (BWS) as she recalls how her organisation has been able to transform lives.BWS has been a ray of hope for 40 such blind girls, many of whom have been abandoned by their families owing to their visual impairment. Sadly, the care, shelter and education for blind girls come at a cost, and BWS is unable to keep its work going. According to the nonprofit office bearer, “Many parents neglect their blind daughters and at times even sell them off for begging, etc. Even if the girl is from a well-to-do family, they feel providing education and care to a blind girl is a waste of money”. “What is the fault of an innocent child?”, she asks.Education, the only hope “These girls have no future without education. If they don’t receive education, they will remain uncared for. They will continue to be ignored by not just their families but even by society at large. Whatever I am today is only because of the education I received. But sadly, every blind girl is not as fortunate. “The major problem in society today is the stigma against mentally ill or mentally disabled people. Families feed and care for men who are mentally ill and keep them at home. But no one wants to help women with mental illnesses,” says N Vanitha Rengaraj, chairperson of Sharanalayam.Sharanalaym’s ‘Jothi’ is a sanctuary for over 100 women facing mental challenges. Many women were rehabilitated by the NGO, thanks to its facilities.Sharanalayam needs urgent support to take care of over 100 women. The organisation also aspires to take care of many more mentally ill women in the coming months and years. The Happy Hands School for the Deaf (HHSD) was founded in 2016 under the Rural Lifeline Trust as a fully residential boarding school and currently has 60 deaf children aged between 4 and 15. It is a defining feature of the school that it is managed and staffed almost exclusively by deaf people. HHSD creates a learning environment for deaf children that is fully accessible due to the comprehensive use of sign language and is supportive of their cultural identity as deaf sign language users. Deaf leadership in deaf education is a novelty in India, where skilled and experienced deaf professionals are still very rare.The second distinguishing feature of HHSD is that it is part of an eco-village campus (Shikha Eco-Learning Village). Ecology, sustainability, and regenerative practices are integral to the school in its philosophy, curriculum, and relationships. The school’s strategy addresses several Sustainable Development Goals, namely “No poverty” (Goal 1), “Quality education” (Goal 4), “Gender equality” (Goal 5), “Affordable and clean energy” (Goal 7) and “Reduced inequalities” (Goal 10).The Happy Hands School for the Deaf has been emerging strongly as a front-runner in innovations for deaf education in India. Located in rural western Odisha, HHSD is a research-led school that partners with international researchers on sign language and deaf education but is also embedded in the Indian context. Its educational models therefore match the local cultural and linguistic situation as well as locally available resources and avoid unrealistic and inappropriate direct transfers of concepts and methods from Western countries. To move forward with deaf education in India, we need models that work in our own context.It is the school’s ambition to become a model school for deaf education in India. In fact, HHSD has already begun this journey and has shown its potential as a modern school. In January 2023, the school was awarded the title of “Best deaf school in India” by the Deaf Leaders Foundation in Chennai. Last January 2024, ‘Best Achievement of the Year 2024 was awarded by the National Association of the Deaf in Kolkatta. In 2023, three HHSD pupils won 2 first prizes and 2-second prizes (out of a total of nine awards) in the yearly national-level sign language storytelling competition organized by the Indian Sign Language Research and Training Centre. Under Department of Empowerment of PwD, New Delhi. HHSD students were also the winners of the “Quizabled” general knowledge quiz competition at the state level in Odisha and participated at the national level in Bengaluru in January 2024. The school also won more than half of all medals at the state-level deaf sports competition in Bhubaneshwar. The school’s director Sibaji Panda has won numerous awards for the groundbreaking work of the school, including nationally as “Best Rehabilitation Professional” in India.
