“They insert a candle in the vagina, fingers are inserted (in the vagina) and tortured, and if children don’t relent even then, they put chilli powder so that children will say “yes” because of the burning of the skin… There are teeth marks on their bodies, and their vaginal parts are burnt. And the worst affected are the children who grow up in red-light areas and are subjected to constant abuse and violence. “The sight of a 12-year-old girl being gang-raped by a group of men near a house l haunts me to this date. I was filled with anguish and resolved to do something,” says Girish Kulkarni who has made it his life’s mission to rescue children from red light areas and give them a safe and secure childhood. In the last 3 decades Girish has saved over 1100 girls from a life of abuse in red-light areas, giving them a loving home, education and medical care. I had even seen my friend’s 15-year-old sister and 70-year-old grandmother being forced to do sex work for the price of a cup of tea”, recalls Girish. “I started by merely feeding and teaching children of sex workers initially with the intention of giving them some respite from the horrors of life of abuse in red-light areas. Gradually more and more mothers started coming to me and asked me to take their children away, even if it was just for a couple of hours,” he further adds.The work that Girish started in his youth gradually grew to become a movement, with many more joining his cause. We are Har Hath Kalam, a nonprofit that strives to provide access to education and life skills to the 1600 children in the slums of Patiala.In this campaign, we seek your support for building Learning Centers in two slums for 150 children and 50 young adults. Your contribution will also aid in providing 50 children with an exposure to the world beyond their bastis this summer, through day-long Exploration Trips. 
 The Learning Centre aims to provide the slum community, a space for1. Early learning Programme for the very young children to prepare them for school2. Academic Support Programme for children who have gained admission to schools and need after school support to bridge the gaps in their learning3. Academic and Lifeskills Programme for drop-outs who are children working to support their families and cannot go to school4. Adult Literacy Programme for the young adults, men and women of the basti who wish to further their academic learning and obtain the life skills that prepare them for employment or entrepreneurship. Open schooling, digital learning, financial literacy, livelihood and skill development are all aspects of the programmeThe Exploration Trips are planned as visits to a forest, a dairy farm, a milk plant, a bakery, a newspaper printing press, the science city and an outbound trip to the hills during the summer break. These are aimed towards• opening doors of knowledge and experience for the children by giving them access to spaces which generally do not welcome them• encouraging a sense of wonder, discovery and exploration in the world beyond their immediate surroundings• understanding the reality of ‘how things work’• a journey of self-awareness and resilience in the hills 
 In our existing Learning Centers in two slums, we have managed to-1. Build trust in the bastis &amp; created safe spaces. A culture of dialogue is being encouraged as a means of independent problem solving for the community.2. Provide regular academic support to children and young adults. Young girls who had dropped out of school for housework have taken an initiative to continue their learning.3. Initiated a livelihood &amp; skill development programme with stitching classes for young girls in one basti4. Identified and trained local leaders from within the bastis to enable ownership and sustainability within the community5. Provided access to government schemes and documents for all members of the bastis.We strongly believe that your gift of contribution will allow us to recreate this model in two more bastis and enable a more equitable, just and level ground for the children to learn with dignity and confidence. We are a diverse group with work experience in the field of education, the social sector, teacher training, facilitation and social-emotional learning. Six members of our core group are alumni of Thapar Engineering College, Patiala, one from IIM Calcutta and two members with an extensive background of work in the education and social sectors.
