I was filled with anguish and resolved to do something,” says Girish Kulkarni who has made it his life’s mission to rescue children from red light areas and give them a safe and secure childhood. In the last 3 decades Girish has saved over 1100 girls from a life of abuse in red-light areas, giving them a loving home, education and medical care. Here at HELP Trust, we run informal evening classes and development programmes in Tamil Nadu and Maharashtra for children, as well as literacy programmes for women from underprivileged societies.70 out of 100 children in school drop out by the time they reach secondary education. When we started working here, the education level hit a low due to the destruction caused by the Tsunami in 2004. 50% of children dropped out before they reached class 5 and ended up as daily wage workers or bonded labourers.Today, we run nurseries for children aged 3-5 and informal evening classes and computer training for school dropouts. We also run literacy programmes for women where they learn accounting and basic reading and writing skills. So far we have reached over 1,500 children and helped more than 1,000 families.

Human Education And Liberation For Poor

Dinesh Raja, a five-year-old boy, is from a very poor family in Koliyankulam. At home he rarely got to enjoy a proper meal and often went to bed hungry. The meals he did infrequently have were usually leftovers from the house his mother worked in as a maid.

Ever since Dinesh joined our evening school his life has much improved. Not only does he learn basic education, he gets to have healthy snacks and milk every evening before class. He also relishes attending school every day as he really enjoys learning new things both in English and in his regional language. His progress is something we are all proud to have had a hand in.

Coastal villages including, Kootapuli and Perumanal of the Tirunelveli district, Tamil Nadu, recently struggled with the disasters caused by the tsunami. Several houses were demolished and boats were ravaged, ruining the main source of employment for most of the inhabitants in these areas.

Over 75% of people rely upon fishing as their employment and suffered greatly due to the natural calamity. After the tsunami hit these people not only lost their fishing tools and homes but lost their way of earning an income and the ability to afford medical care.

To aid in their search for alternative employment, Help Trust identified 45 women from tsunami affected families and enrolled them for sewing and embroidery training at our vocational centre.

Help Trust further linked with local Panchayat and small garments shops in the vicinity to provide work from home on a contract basis to these women upon completion of the course. Now most of the women are easily earning Rs. 3000-5000 every month; supporting their families while they get their lives back on track.

Rise4Girl, an initiative by HELP Trust, is an innovative program to educate, equip and empower girls from poor and marginalized families across Tamil Nadu and Maharashtra and to create social ambassadors in the community. Investing towards Girl Child education brings high returns in terms of breaking the cycle of poverty and aiding economic growth. It also improves children's and women's survival rates and health, delays child marriage and early pregnancies, enlightens women both at home and at workplace. 
 We will provide a financial grant to support girl student's education, awarded on the basis of academic merit, family situation &amp; economic status to encourage the girls in their academic pursuits. Rise4Girl is meant to cover the tuition fees of Higher Education (9th and 10th grade), Higher Secondary Education (11th and 12th) and all 3/ 4-year undergraduate degree programs. The girls will also be encouraged to pick up a social issue in their community and help solve that issue through the local community network. We also provide all the support the girl would need to do the social cause chosen by her. 
 We want to impact the lives of 500 girl children by raising funds to cover their tuition expenses for the upcoming academic year. Thus, the purpose of Rise4Girl is to provide support to avoid school dropouts, to fulfill their dream of going to school, complete higher education, achieve their life goals and to create a change in the society. Along with this, the selected girls would take up causes in their community and impact the lives of other people. The aim is to create a chain of social change by empowering girls to educate themselves and work towards the change that they want to see in their community.

For us, the idea of childhood is synonymous with the ideas of playing and learning. In this learning, science plays an important role. The understanding of science is intimately linked to the understanding of the universe. From the smallest atom to the largest galaxy, everything involves science. It illuminates the working of the world around us and helps prompt new ideas. However, many schools lack the facilities to help children see the wonders of science practically. While the children are aware of the theory, they have nowhere to practice the same. We want to change that. 
 Our idea is to revolutionise the way science is taught, where the means to carry out science practically are limited. We want to make hands-on learning accessible to underprivileged children. The proposed mobile science lab will help to provide a space where children will be able to practically understand science through experiments. And because the lab will be housed in a van, we will be able to bring the joy of learning science to a large number of children. 
 This project involves buying and equipping a van with material for a science laboratory. The science van will be well-equipped for basic science experiments pertaining to the existing curriculum. Vans will have the capacity to cover 6 schools per week. They would provide a dedicated 2 to 4 hours for each set of children and thus cover around 120 children in a day. All donations will be towards realising this dream.

Children are highly impressionable and it is during childhood that they absorb the most amount of information. The importance of games in childhood cannot be underestimated to the point that, this right is mentioned in the UN Convention on the Rights of Children, Article 31(1): “State Parties recognize the right of the child to rest and leisure, to engage in play and recreational activities appropriate to the age of the child and to participate freely in cultural life and the arts.” We want to use this power of games for the betterment of the children. We want to make the way they learn fun by carrying out the same through toys and games. 
 Toys are, thus, an essential part of the life of a child and are necessary to ensure their normal upbringing. To fulfil this need in the lives of children we have our Toy Library. Through our Toy Library, we want to provide children with the option of learning creatively-through games and toys. This would make the learning more enjoyable and make them want to come to school instead of dreading it. 
 The project involves buying and stocking our toy library with a variety of games in accordance with the academic curriculum-those relating to maths, science, general knowledge, strategy-among many others. We also want to modernise this project by bringing in digital aid on which to play games like tablets. This will help in familiarising the children with technology as well as paving the way forward for more modern toys. All your donations will go towards this cause.
