“What will happen to them after me? I am 80+. I spend sleepless nights,” worries ex-Air Force officer, Group Captain AC Barua while talking about the future of the 28 destitute women under his care. “They have nobody in this world, sometimes they don’t remember their own names. They are absolutely alone,” he informs us as he goes from one room to the other meeting all the women who live at Seneh, the only home where they are loved and taken care of. After fighting for his country all his life, this octogenarian is now fighting to rescue homeless and abandoned women from dying on the streets. But he cannot do it alone. “Everyday I keep on getting calls from here and there. ‘Oh! there’s a woman lying here. Can you help?’ But I don’t dare to go and help because I don’t have the money. I don’t have the resources, our resources are very limited,” explains Gr. Capt. Group Captain Barua has not only rescued them from critical conditions, he has provided them with urgent medical care, food and above all, a free safe shelter where they can live with love and care. Among these residents is Sarala Kalita who fled to save herself from the tortures of her alcoholic husband only to face neglect and trauma from her brothers- and sisters-in-law. “Both my brothers and their wives urged my father to leave me somewhere as they didn’t want to take care of me anymore. One day my brother’s wife didn’t even let me have food at home. She just wanted me to leave and go away. So that’s why, my father got in touch with Seneh through someone, and handed me over to Sir to take care of me,” says Sarita who has found joy in living at Seneh. “Coming to Seneh, it felt like I got a new life altogether. Sir has given me a harmonium. I love singing. It makes me forget everything and takes me to someplace else entirely,” she adds. More women like Sarala can find their way to a loving home like Seneh. All they need is a little bit of your kindness. “It is difficult to make both ends meet”To sustain their daily expenditure, Capt Barua needs approx ₹3 lakh a month and arranging the funds is a mammoth challenge for the NGO. “Our expenses are growing day by day. Residents are growing older, their sicknesses are increasing. At times we have to give them special food. They require more care so we have to get more employees. About half of them require leading around, 1-2 has to be fed also. Helping Hands Charitable Trust was founded in 2009 to contribute meaningfully in bettering lives of thousands of people across the country. Its first major project was to provide relief to the people of Nepal during the 2015 earthquake. Since then, it has grown over the years to cater to the many needs of marginalised populations of the society, including securing livelihoods, basic healthcare, education, skill development as well as disaster relief and rehabilitation. Most recently, the trust has arisen to the crisis of the Covid 19 pandemic in the country, reaching out to the migrant and daily wage workers distributing ration kits, running community kitchens, arranging their safe passage home, running migrant worker camps, setting up Covid Care Centres, putting up Oxygen generation plants, distributing masks, generating vaccine awareness, creating Oxygen concentrator and cylinder banks, training nurses and ASHA using the latest simulation techniques. Low rate of registration was due to difficult process of registration. But after KSSS intervention and subsequent advocacy, the Board relaxed the registration process. This resulted in the spike in the registration from the city of Mumbai. Hello, We would like to thank you very much for your contribution for the DSG COVID Emergency response and civic coordination effort in NCR! It is very heartening and encouraging that in the very short time, we have over 50 volunteers working in this team. This is to update you about the various measures taken by this team of volunteers in helping out those in need with support of your generous contribution. Within a week, our social media team has come out with “Home Based Care Guide” in English and Hindi, videos, infographics etc. on various precautions, preventive methods and a repository of information related to the pandemic. Our Resource team; just a day old has been able to mobilise INR 11 lakh (~USD 15,000) and is collaborating with Give India Foundation, Helping Hands Charitable Trust and Programme for Social Action. As on date we are getting funds from Indians (including NRIs) and foreign nationals through this effort. We are immensely grateful to all our partners for facilitating the effort and all the contributors for such crucial support at this juncture. We have, from the hospital assistance and emergency coordination group, been able to cater to over 150 requests for oxygen, hospital beds, medical equipment, plasma, etc by sending people the right information, in the last three days alone, with the active and quick response from our verification team that verifies the availability in real time.  Our procurement/delivery team has been able to find, procure and deliver crucial care items for those in need, sometimes running to multiple places, waiting in queues, undeterred by the failed attempts. A few have also helped friends in delivering food and other essentials. Our home care team is currently caring for a number of patients in need, giving them the right protocols to follow, checking on them remotely and in consultation with doctors. In the last three days alone more than 20 have shown signs of positive recovery and some have recovered too! The help and advice rendered by the doctors is nothing but monumental! Through monitoring multiple cases we have found some reckless prescriptions of strong drugs which are having a very detrimental effect. Hence have lobbied with medical intuitions and  senior medical practitioners who are in agreement, to make videos on the harmful effects of panic medications.  Further, we are doing our best to amplify their concerns by making social media personalities to also create awareness of the same.  Finally, we are in conversation with religious and charitable organizations for making available physical spaces with beds, oxygen and a medical team for those who cannot afford the skyrocketing prices of life saving Oxygen and medicines. We are putting all our efforts to make these be available free of cost to the poor. Even though this is nothing but a tiny drop in this tsunami coming at us, even this would not have been possible without your help and support. In the coming days we would be scaling up and also streamlining some of our activities to a targeted mission to specifically reach out to the working class colonies in and around the city. We hope to engage at large scale in providing medical supplements, para-medical assistance, setting up clinic-like facilities in community centres, and providing kit based rations to the needy - all based on the identification done by ground organisations who we are partnering with. With increase in the pace of climate change, the frequency and intensity of extreme weather events have also increased. According to a Lancet study, over seven lakh yearly deaths are related to abnormal temperatures in India. In fact, in India, the number of deaths per year linked with abnormal cold temperatures is 6,55,600 while the number of deaths associated with high temperatures is 83,700. In all north Indian states that witness extreme winters, with temperatures falling below the freezing point, year after year schools are forced to remain shut, trains are delayed or rescheduled, etc. The worst affected are the homeless. Given the inadequacy and deplorable conditions in night shelters, taking to the streets even in extreme cold is the only choice for many people. 
 HHCT has over the years, developed an all India network of volunteers who seek out and distribute blankets to the most needy segments of the society. Last year, we distributed over 10,000 blankets to the homeless in streets of different towns and cities, to the adivasi villages in forests of Tripura, Odisha, Mizoram, Assam and to people living in informal hutments in the slums of Mumbai, Pune, Delhi, Guwahati, Patna and other towns. This year too HHCT will buy blankets straight from manufacturers in Punjab and Haryana and distribute them through it's network of youth volunteers drawn from the National Youth Project, across the country. 
 Through this campaign, HHCT aims to provide 25,000 blankets to people living on the streets during harsh winters Our annual blanket distribution drives which start in November, have been instrumental in providing warmth to thousands of impoverished people every year and has been the only covering which has kept many of them away from death. This year too we aim to create a significant impact by channeling the valuable donations of our supporters to directly saving lives. A donation as little as Rs.200 can save a life. Because of Lockdown the fishermen have not been able to venture out into the sea leading to loss of livelihood, added to this it is monsoon now, which is the season where they can't fish as a result they are going to face very stressful economic situation. Also, due to the extended lockdown they have exhausted their bare little savings. Hence, they need support for sometime. 
 Our initial plan was to run a community kitchen till the end of July but due to the rains and constraints of cooking in a closed area resulting in lack of hygiene we have decided to provide 1 month supply of dry ration to each of the 150 poorest families living in the area. 
 This assistance will provide some food security till the lockdown is lifted till July 31, 2020 which is the current deadline of the lockdown.

Helping Hands Charitable Trust was founded in the aftermath of the Nepal earthquake and has been at the forefront of disaster relief work since then. In the past year, Helping Hands has been conducting medical camps twice a month for project affected families displaced and relocated to Mahul. Residents suffer from severe ailments owing to the toxic environment amidst refineries and chemical factories.
