On most days she goes hungry and sometimes a small vada pav is all that she can afford to eat in the entire day. Like Saraswati there are thousands of underprivileged families living outside government hospitals in extreme conditions, with no food or a bed to sleep on, waiting for their loved ones to get the treatment they require.  Vikas Parcchanda, CEO Akshaya Chaitanya, Maharashtra Chapter is supporting thousands of family members living outside government hospitals with 6,500 hot and nutritious meals every day. This requires a continuous flow of funds, which are now drying up. They have enough cash to sustain for just one more month. One full meal a day- one thing less to worry“They stay here for weeks, sometimes even months. They are poor, most of them have no medical insurance, they lose their livelihood and have no place to stay. Many find refuge on sidewalks and pavements to sleep and decide to go hungry for days, just to save a few more rupees. So we wanted to ensure no families of the patients getting treated in these hospitals go hungry or compromise on their meals ” - Vikas Parchhanda, CEO, Akshaya Chaitanya, Maharashtra Chapter.Every day Akshaya Chaitanya serves 6,500 free unlimited hot &amp; nutritious meals at Mumbai’s 17 major public hospitals. <ul><li>The marginalized from near-by slums in Mumbai and across Maharashtra make for the most in-patient load at Mumbai's public hospitals with &gt;90% having no medical insurance. To add to their woes, the bread-winner loses the livelihood being bed-ridden or taking care of the loved one. Now with the added burden of hospitalization, these individuals are pushed further into poverty.</li><li>The annual income levels of these families as per a survey in 2015 published by ‘Statista research department’ is ranging from under 75K to a maximum of 3 lacs. Source: Statista Research Department</li><li>Most families don’t own a two / four wheeler, washing machine, personal computer etc. The worst part is that 80-90% do not have any kind of medical insurance</li><li>The education level of the chief earner in the family ranges from being illiterate to at most higher or secondary education. Source: Socio economic classification by ‘The Market research society of India’</li></ul> 
 Akshaya Chaitanya is an initiative in partnership with Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) and Medical education and drug department (MEDD), Maharashtra Government to provide relief to these families by serving them a wholesome, hot meal free of cost. An MoU confirming this partnership for all BMC and DMER hospitals has been signed to serve 10,000 meals every day.Our aim is to ensure that accompanying family members are well fed to provide quality care and can save every penny for patient's medication and well-being.Highlights of our service:<ul><li>Unlimited and comprehensive nutritious meal comprising rotis, rice, lentils/cereals, dry vegetable dish and pickle</li><li>Cyclic menu with variety across weekdays suitable for local palate</li><li>Food is served hot and fresh from insulated vessels with-in 2 hour of cooking</li></ul> 
 Quantitative outcome<ul><li>1.) Enable the family members to provide quality care to patients hospitalized in 6431 beds of four hospitals i.e. KEM, Sion, Nair and Kasturba Hospital.</li><li>2.) At 3600 meals a day, we expect to serve 1.32 million meals annually in &gt; 8 hospitals</li><li>3.) At 80% bed occupancy and avg. length of stay at 7 days, we expect to support 1.28 lakh unique families every year through these four hospitals. Further, we would keep a track of the count of Patients recovering from illness and families returning to normal life </li></ul>Qualitative outcome<ul><li>1.) Physical and mental well-being of family members to ensure quality care for the patient.</li><li>2.) Family members of the patient residing at hospital be protected against a potential illness by way of good nutritious meal.</li></ul>

In a small village near Satara, there resides a woman named Hawsabai Bhimrao Sawant, aged 60. Her life took an unexpected turn when her daughter, Archana, began to struggle with severe mental health issues. With no stable income and her son working inconsistently as a driver, providing for the family became increasingly challenging.As Archana's condition worsened, her husband decided to separate, taking their children away and forbidding Hawsabai from seeing them. Amidst this heartbreak, Hawsabai found herself alone, caring for her daughter, who often blamed her for the family's troubles.Navigating the complexities of Mumbai's medical system was daunting for Hawsabai, who initially struggled to find proper care for Archana. Financial constraints added to her burden, forcing her to skip meals to afford medication. However, a glimmer of hope emerged when she discovered Akshaya Chaitanya's free meal services, providing her with much-needed relief and strength.In the beginning, she had to sacrifice her own meals to save some money for medication. But with the discovery of Akshaya Chaitanya's free meals, Hawsabai found relief and renewed strength. These meals not only filled her empty stomach but also empowered her to face each day's challenges with determination, allowing her to allocate her limited resources more effectively.Despite the challenges, Hawsabai's love for her daughter remained steadfast. Her resilience and unwavering dedication to caring for Archana, despite the accusations and hardships, exemplify the profound bond between a mother and child.Hawsabai's story reminds us of the incredible strength and selflessness found in the hearts of mothers. Let us honor her courage and determination as she navigates life's toughest challenges with grace and love.

Swasthya Ahara: Public Hospital Feeding Program and Bal Shiksha Ahara: Municipal School Feeding Program

<ul><li>It started with feeding vulnerable family members of patients at Indo American Cancer Hospital, Hyderabad in Nov 2011 and requests from several government and trust run hospitals started pouring in to expand the program. We instituted and registered a trust, HKM Charitable foundation, in May 2013 to expand the program to serve 3500+ daily in 17 public hospitals. We expanded to reach every underprivileged section in Hyderabad. And, it took us 8 years to reach a scale to feed 50K meals every day to realize our vision for Hyderabad in collaboration with several corporate partners and local municipal authorities. We have been in service for over 9 years and have served 130Mn+ meals across 200+ touchpoints supported by 4 hi-tech kitchens built and operational, so far. </li><li>Akshaya Chaitanya is a not-for-profit initiative of HKM charitable foundation to enable the underprivileged, admitted in public hospitals in Mumbai, to recoup from an illness in the family. These families rush to public hospitals for affordable treatment as &gt;90% do not have any kind of medical insurance. To add to their woes, the bread-winner loses the livelihood of being bed-ridden or taking care of the loved one.</li><li>Now, Akshaya Chaitanya wants to serve high quality, wholesome hot meals to the vulnerable families in public hospitals of Mumbai that are battling illness, poverty and hunger at the same time. We have signed an MoU with MEDD, Maharashtra government to serve in state-run hospitals. And to accomplish our objective, we have built a hi-tech kitchen in Byculla to serve 20,000 meals a day.</li></ul>
