For a mother who has spent her entire life loving and raising her child, being beaten and mercilessly thrown out onto the streets by her own son is too heartbreaking to overcome. But this is a common story among the elderly residents of the Guru Vishram Vridh Ashram. “I’ve seen mothers in old and torn clothes, their bodies smelling and their hands and feet rotting and covered in maggots,” shares Dr. G.P. Bhagat, founder of the ashram. These abandoned elderly men and women lay starving on the streets hoping for someone to rescue them from their suffering. But most people walk past them without a second glance. “Like this”, Dr. Bhagat explains, “many elders die on the roads.”Since 2003, SHEOWS (Saint Hardyal Educational and Orphans Welfare Society) has rescued over 10,000 elderly people from the streets and given them a home with care and support. The Guru Vishram Vridh Ashram has a dedicated rescue team that saves the elderly from the streets and gives them immediate medical care upon their arrival at the home. To tend to the multiple health complications of the seniors, the home has a medical facility with doctors and nurses, a physiotherapy unit, a pathology lab, a digital X-ray monitoring machine and a pharmacy to provide 24-hour care to older adults anytime they require assistance, even during emergencies. Human trafficking in India is a horrifying crisis. Thousands of victims, primarily women and girl children, are exploited in red-light areas. Over 10,659 cases were reported between 2018-2022, but experts say that these numbers are likely a fraction of the reality due to underreporting, yet they still do expose the magnitude of the crisis. Girls make up 71.4% of missing children in India and a large number of these girls end up at red-light areas. Sex trafficking is particularly gruesome, with girls as young as 12 sold for as little as a few thousand rupees.

<ul><li>It started with feeding vulnerable family members of patients at Indo American Cancer Hospital, Hyderabad in Nov 2011 and requests from several government and trust run hospitals started pouring in to expand the program. We instituted and registered a trust, HKM Charitable foundation, in May 2013 to expand the program to serve 3500+ daily in 17 public hospitals. We expanded to reach every underprivileged section in Hyderabad. And, it took us 8 years to reach a scale to feed 50K meals every day to realize our vision for Hyderabad in collaboration with several corporate partners and local municipal authorities. We have been in service for over 9 years and have served 130Mn+ meals across 200+ touchpoints supported by 4 hi-tech kitchens built and operational, so far. </li><li>Akshaya Chaitanya is a not-for-profit initiative of HKM charitable foundation to enable the underprivileged, admitted in public hospitals in Mumbai, to recoup from an illness in the family. These families rush to public hospitals for affordable treatment as &gt;90% do not have any kind of medical insurance. To add to their woes, the bread-winner loses the livelihood of being bed-ridden or taking care of the loved one.</li><li>Now, Akshaya Chaitanya wants to serve high quality, wholesome hot meals to the vulnerable families in public hospitals of Mumbai that are battling illness, poverty and hunger at the same time. We have signed an MoU with MEDD, Maharashtra government to serve in state-run hospitals. And to accomplish our objective, we have built a hi-tech kitchen in Byculla to serve 20,000 meals a day.</li></ul>

 Akshaya Chaitanya is an initiative in partnership with Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) and Medical education and drug department (MEDD), Maharashtra Government to provide relief to these families by serving them a wholesome, hot meal free of cost. An MoU confirming this partnership for all BMC and DMER hospitals has been signed to serve 10,000 meals every day.Our aim is to ensure that accompanying family members are well fed to provide quality care and can save every penny for patient's medication and well-being.Highlights of our service:<ul><li>Unlimited and comprehensive nutritious meal comprising rotis, rice, lentils/cereals, dry vegetable dish and pickle</li><li>Cyclic menu with variety across weekdays suitable for local palate</li><li>Food is served hot and fresh from insulated vessels with-in 2 hour of cooking</li></ul> 
 Quantitative outcome<ul><li>1.) Enable the family members to provide quality care to patients hospitalized in 6431 beds of four hospitals i.e. KEM, Sion, Nair and Kasturba Hospital.</li><li>2.) At 3600 meals a day, we expect to serve 1.32 million meals annually in &gt; 8 hospitals</li><li>3.) At 80% bed occupancy and avg. length of stay at 7 days, we expect to support 1.28 lakh unique families every year through these four hospitals. Further, we would keep a track of the count of Patients recovering from illness and families returning to normal life </li></ul>Qualitative outcome<ul><li>1.)
