"My son used to kick me when he was in my womb. Why make an issue when he kicked me in my old age?" reasons a very forgiving Shakti Dasi. The widow travelled 2300 kms from Tripura to Vrindavan after her only son violently beat her with a burning plank of wood and broke her knee one evening. She had to leave behind the business she had built with her husband who had died a few years back. Shakti ended up on the streets of Brindavan begging for food and shelter. But when Winnie Singh of Maitri saw Shakti in a frail state in tattered clothes, she brought her to the shelter home where Shakti gets food, care and medicines. What more, with Maitri’s intervention, Shakti reconciled with her son - and daughter-in-law, and now travels home to Tripura twice a year to spend time with her grandchildren. But she is not leaving Maitri, as this has become her family.Not every elderly widow who comes to Vrindavan after being abandoned by her family gets as lucky as Shakti. Many of them often end up living a lonely life and begging to survive on the streets. After being thrown out of their often abandoned by their own children and are forced to beg for food and shelter. “Through Project Jeevan, Maitri houses aging widow mothers in two ashrams in Vrindavan and Radhakund (Mathura), providing them with wellness and well-being. The programme also reaches out to widow mothers beyond the ashrams with fruit, milk and healthcare services,” explains Winnie Singh, co-founder and executive director, Maitri India.Save homeless elderly widows from begging on the streetsMost widows who make their way to Vrindavan are abandoned by their families, often after years of abuse. They come here hoping they will spend the rest of their days in prayer and devotion. But most live in impoverished conditions on the streets and in dingy rooms. In India, the issue of Out of School Children is a major challenge and complex social problem. Despite education being the fundamental right for 6-14 years children, the shocking number of millions of out-of-school children is a harsh reality. These include children who have never been to school and those who have dropped out of primary school's early classes. When the children have enrolled in school again, in age-appropriate classes, they exhibit learning gaps, which impedes their learning and undermines their confidence. As schools begin to limp back after the prolonged disruption of the Covid-19 pandemic, India’s flagship national education survey has captured an unprecedented jump in government school students. A growing dependency on private tuition classes — and a stark digital divide have been seen, which carries the risk of severely affecting the learning abilities of primary grade students. Various surveys have highlighted the problem of children being unable to catch up as one of the biggest challenges in learning. 
 Learning is a progressive and continuous process, leading from one concept to the next. It is crucial to address the learning gaps of students and this also needs the immediate attention of the teacher. The more time is lost, the more difficult it becomes to undertake the task. Hence the need for Special Training Centres (STCs), which help such children bridge their learning gaps and catch up with other children at their grade level. HPPI's Kadam Programme provide complete mainstreaming support to children through an accelerated curriculum in the special training centres. A robust system of accelerated learning provides a strong foundational understanding of basic concepts, which is imperative to stop children from dropping out of the education system. The programme aims to improve children’s subject skills and knowledge, specifically in mathematics, environmental science, Hindi, and English. It blends formal learning and skill-based experiences to engage students effectively. It enhances the formal learning skills of students. It is administered as a package for learning at the individual pace and level of students in the formal education system. 
 HPPI aims to ensure that all OOSC can bridge their learning gap to join regular schools and learn with other children. HPPI is on a mission to reach a minimum of 2 million children in-school and out-of-school to bring them to age-appropriate learning levels, of which at least half are girl children over the next five years. This includes engagement of state authorities and teachers to adopt methodologies and practices that will enable children to learn how to learn with responsibility and to construct knowledge in a natural progression (being a partner with the child to build knowledge rather than being just a provider of knowledge), in a way that is truly in line with the spirit and idea of the National Curriculum Framework. Kadam- Getting children back to school

The complete lockdown of the Country first for 21 days from 24th March 2020 extending to 3rd May 2020 amidst the COVID-19 epidemic to check its spread in the communities, have predisposed these targeted daily-wagers community households to their current of food shortages and lack of income. Proxy indicators and news channels show that coping mechanisms have been stretched to the last limits with evidence of decreased daily food consumption of most vulnerable households, i.e. restricting consumption by adults in order for small children to eat and reliance on kinship support, irregular food distribution and even scavenging for food assistance. 
 With the support of our dedicated project staff, We are reaching out to the most vulnerable families across 9 states to provide them dry ration and sanitation kits. Till now we have secured food for over 26,723 ultra-poor families directly (over 1,33,615 individuals) and 12,110 hot meals across different locations in the Country and reaching out to more families every day with food rations and cooked meals during this difficult lock-down period, fighting the COVID-19 pandemic.Our aim is to reach out to maximum number of families during lockdown and help them with livelihood rehabilitation. 
 We plan to spread awareness and provide dry ration kits to another 5,000 households (and thus 25,000+ people) across 9 states in the country. We have already distributed one month of food supplies to 4496 families as on 13th April 2020; and will continue to reach out to more families everyday with your support.Donation of INR 5000 can provide one-month’s ration for two families of 4 persons each. We seek your hearty support in this initiative by supporting as many families as possible and helping us build strong response capabilities on-ground.

Securing Food for Daily Wage Workers during COVID-19 Lockdown

The International Labour Organisation estimates that nearly 170 million children across the world are engaged in some form of labour, with many working in the textile industry to satisfy the demands of consumers in Europe and the US. The fast fashion model has further contributed to these staggering figures.India is home to one of the highest concentrations of child workers in the world. Panipat district, in the north Indian state of Haryana, in particular, is famous as the cast-off capital of the world and is the largest textile recycling hub in Asia. The population in the area consists mainly of migrant families with uneducated and impoverished backgrounds who work in the textile recycling factories at minimal wages. The hazardous factory environment exposes these children to various harmful toxins that mostly lead to serious health issues. Many of the children miss out on foundational education – the only panacea available to them – as they are forced tag along with their parents to work in these factories and contribute to the family income. 
 Under its area-based approach, HPPI is creating child labour free zones in the district through engagement with the district authorities, local factory owners, parents and the school management by spreading awareness about labour rights amongst the textile workers and establishing and operating bridge-learning centres, called Sambhavana schools. After identifying the working children, the project staff brings them out of the unsafe factory environment and either enrol them into a formal school or into a Sambhavana school, where their academic and social competencies are built up before they are enrolled into a formal school. Activity-based pedagogy at the schools promotes accelerated learning among the children at the school while also providing them with a safe learning environment. 
 In little over one year, this intervention has helped to transform the life of over 3,000 Out-of-School children, some of whom were earlier working in textile factories as child labour, by providing them with the opportunity to learn and educate themselves, promising a better future. A major impact of the project has been to mainstream more than 2,000 children in formal schools, enabling them to weave a future of their own desire. Day-care centres are providing a safe learning environment to over 1,600 children who were previously exposed to unsafe and toxic surroundings in the factories. The children use this time to learn new skills and participate in extra-curricular activities like sports, art and craft and exposure visits, which helps in their overall development. The child labour free zones act as models for other European garments and textile supply chains to ensure a level playing field for the children by performing regular due-diligence in these factories.
