But this is a common story among the elderly residents of the Guru Vishram Vridh Ashram. “I’ve seen mothers in old and torn clothes, their bodies smelling and their hands and feet rotting and covered in maggots,” shares Dr. G.P. ﻿·       Street dogs are estimated to be 30 million in India. The challenges of their co-existence with people includes conflicts, diseases such as rabies, bites, chasing, barking, creating a mess and generally viewed as too many in areas. ·       There is no comprehensive, scientific and humane dog management program across India. The Animal Birth Control (ABC) is implemented ad hoc based on a city’s decision to undertake such a project. ·       Most ABC programs are unscientifically, haphazardly implemented, often leading to more suffering for the dogs. ·       Street dogs face abuse, relocation, killing, poisoning and various forms of torture despite their protection under Indian law that gives them the right to live where they are born. 
 ·      Humane Society International India is working on several aspects of animal welfare amd protection. One of the core focusess is on reducing human-dog conflict by sterilizing and vaccinating street dogs and building community awareness. ·      HSI/India is implementing mass sterilization and vaccination (ABC) projects in Lucknow in addition to Vadodara, and Uttarakhand – Dehradun and surrounding areas (Doiwala, Vikasnagar, Herbetpur) , Mussoorie, Nainital and surrounding areas (Bhimtal and Bhowali). ·      Our ABC projects are implemented by doing scientific surveys at the beginning and throughout a project. Our protocols for all activities are developed and followed keeping in mind a street dogs' welfare. Every dog that goes through our program is marked through an app that has its exact street location. We provide transparent data to the government about all our work. ·      We focus on reducing the dog density and population over a period of 3-5 years by sterilizing and vaccinating at least 80% of dogs, which has an impact on their population growth, rabies and other welfare indicators of the dogs. ·      Communities are a crucial part of the process and are involved and invited to see the work being done first-hand at our facilities.  
 HSI/India has successfully sterilized over 1,50,000 and vaccinated 3,30,000 dogs across India since 2013. We have been able to sterilize 100% of dogs in Nainital, 92% in Mussouries, 73% in Dehradun and 80% in Vadodara. In Luknow, a project started just a couple of months prior to onset of COVID19, we have sterilized and vaccinated 23% of street dogs. We aim to reach 80% soon to help:<ol><li>Curb the overpopulation of dogs</li><li>Reduce the prevalence of rabies and </li><li>Mitigate human - dog conflict.</li></ol> Your funds will go to sterilize and vaccinate street dogs in Lucknow. Do you know that research has shown that cruelty to animals is directly related to violence towards humans in the long run? Almost all of the world's most wanted criminals (murderers, rapists and serial killers) have had a history of animal abuse. Yet, none of the law enforcement agencies pay heed to this which makes it even more difficult for the common public to identify violent tendencies in children and youth and prevent crime. Animal welfare is often seen as an isolated issue in spite of research and experience showing otherwise it is interlinked with human welfare very closely. In spite of the Constitution of India making it a fundamental duty to protect animals and India being home to two important laws to protect animals (Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960 and Wildlife Protection Act 1972), it is disheartening that animal cruelty is neither considered a mental health issue nor a threat to society. With strong legislations and more awareness amongst stakeholders from all walks of life, India has the potential to be a more humane and compassionate society. 
 HSI India works to protect all animals and are the country's experts on animal laws and policies. Our aim is 1.   Sensitize law enforcement agencies including police, animal husbandry dept and judicial magistrates in each state of the country 2.   Conduct workshops on the importance of animal welfare as an indicator to violence against humans for child and women’s rights organizations (grassroot and grasstop)3.   Train students and youth on animal law and the basics of law so they can take legal action against animal cruelty – Have ambassadors from each district4.   Run a cruelty helpline in all states to streamline and expedite action against cruelty to animals be it on the street or against pets.  
 We want to make India a better nation for animals. We aim to achieve the following with your support:-      Research on the current state of animal cruelty cases filed and convictions obtained-      Create a database of complaints of animal cruelty instances, police action and appropriate prosecution, cases that achieved justice for animals-      Partnership with child help and organizations who work against domestic abuse to recognize indicators of violence in households and to prevent both cruelty against animals and humans alike-      Develop policy in coordination with allied partners and law enforcement agencies which can help animals and human beingsWith HSI India's initiative in a few states, this could then be spread across all states. Saving the owl through strict law enforcement & education! The largest danger to the population of wild animals remains large scale habitat destruction and fragmentation, illegal wildlife trade is a close second. Illegal bird trade in India is a thriving “business” and one that has unfortunately grown in size with time and technological development. In the past many years, a sizeable percentage of trade in owls has been recorded. Unfortunately for owls, their adaptations to survive that render them so successful have also led to them being associated with many myths, superstitions and misbeliefs in India. Owls in India have historically been associated with multiple superstitions and false beliefs ranging from myths, folklore, black magic, witchcraft, prophecy, birth, death and many other natural and unnatural phenomenon (Bruce 1999, Marks et. al., 1999). In Hinduism, it is firmly believed that an owl is the vehicle of goddess Lakshmi (goddess of wealth) and hence having one at home will bring more wealth into the house. In Kerala for example, farmers place tree stumps in paddy fields when the crops are about to ripen, praying to goddess Lakshmi to increase their yield. The stumps act as perches for owls, which then hunt rats and mice in the rice fields. Meanwhile, there are several other communities that consider them an ill omen and drive them away. Of the 30-odd species of owls found in India, over 15 species have been observed in trade so far. The most common of them all being the Spotted Owlet. 
 To map the supply chain of owl trade across Peninsular India, devise intervention to end this trade by strengthening enforcement mechanism and reducing demand in key locations such as Crawford Market, Mumbai; Murgi Chowk, Hyderabad and Russell Market, Bengaluru. 
 Conservation of owls and prevention of cruelty to these species in addition to educating the public about the welfare of these animals and other animals.
