For a mother who has spent her entire life loving and raising her child, being beaten and mercilessly thrown out onto the streets by her own son is too heartbreaking to overcome. But this is a common story among the elderly residents of the Guru Vishram Vridh Ashram. “I’ve seen mothers in old and torn clothes, their bodies smelling and their hands and feet rotting and covered in maggots,” shares Dr. G.P. Bhagat, founder of the ashram. These abandoned elderly men and women lay starving on the streets hoping for someone to rescue them from their suffering. “What will happen to them after me? I am 80+. I spend sleepless nights,” worries ex-Air Force officer, Group Captain AC Barua while talking about the future of the 28 destitute women under his care. “They have nobody in this world, sometimes they don’t remember their own names. They are absolutely alone,” he informs us as he goes from one room to the other meeting all the women who live at Seneh, the only home where they are loved and taken care of. After fighting for his country all his life, this octogenarian is now fighting to rescue homeless and abandoned women from dying on the streets. But he cannot do it alone. “Everyday I keep on getting calls from here and there. ‘Oh! there’s a woman lying here. Can you help?’ But I don’t dare to go and help because I don’t have the money. I don’t have the resources, our resources are very limited,” explains Gr. Capt. Many times these are women with mental health conditions and considered being a witch due to superstitious beliefs and beaten up as a result. Group Captain Barua has not only rescued them from critical conditions, he has provided them with urgent medical care, food and above all, a free safe shelter where they can live with love and care. Among these residents is Sarala Kalita who fled to save herself from the tortures of her alcoholic husband only to face neglect and trauma from her brothers- and sisters-in-law. “Both my brothers and their wives urged my father to leave me somewhere as they didn’t want to take care of me anymore. One day my brother’s wife didn’t even let me have food at home. She just wanted me to leave and go away. So that’s why, my father got in touch with Seneh through someone, and handed me over to Sir to take care of me,” says Sarita who has found joy in living at Seneh. “Coming to Seneh, it felt like I got a new life altogether. Sir has given me a harmonium. I love singing. It makes me forget everything and takes me to someplace else entirely,” she adds. More women like Sarala can find their way to a loving home like Seneh. All they need is a little bit of your kindness. “It is difficult to make both ends meet”To sustain their daily expenditure, Capt Barua needs approx ₹3 lakh a month and arranging the funds is a mammoth challenge for the NGO. “Our expenses are growing day by day. Residents are growing older, their sicknesses are increasing. At times we have to give them special food. They require more care so we have to get more employees. About half of them require leading around, 1-2 has to be fed also. COVID-19 assistance at the frontline to vulnerable communities

HAI is working on the Techno-Humanitarian space to ensure use of technology to find efficient solutions during humanitarian crisis. COVID-19 pandemic is the biggest humanitarian crisis in the history of the mankind today, and access to oxygen has become the greatest need for India. Although, the Government of India has definitely taken concrete steps to procure oxygen generators to cater to the shortage of oxygen in the country, the needs are growing and urgent. HAI is determined to contribute towards to this massive crisis situation and has already begun its groundwork. We are bringing together the best of talents, individual and institutions of the country, to come up with an affordable and efficient solution to confront the oxygen shortage. The objective of this new initiative is to provide uninterrupted medical-grade oxygen to mid-sized hospitals in semi-urban and Rural-Indian setups. We intend to reach the masses by setting up 1000 generators at multiple locations throughout the country. Currently, we have about 10 generators and looking to acquire 990 more. Looking at the severity of the situation, we need to act fast.

Facing religious persecution, the minority Hindu population from Pakistan has been fleeing and seeking refuge in India since the time of the partition. With the increasing incidences of religious persecution, the number of people escaping atrocity also increases in the same proportion. It is estimated that approximately 5,000 people of Hindu faith are fleeing every year to India in search of safer future. Most of them come from the Sindh province of Pakistan where the Hindu population is concentrated.Refugees, living in the Majnu ka Tila and Signature Bridge camps, started arriving to India since 2013. While being in Pakistan, the girls felt unsafe and all of them faced pressure to convert. Most of these people owned land and did farming in Pakistan, which they found increasingly challenging due to obstructions from the radical groups. As of now 140 families with a total population of 700 people live in the Majnu ka Tila camp and 85 families with a total population of 350 people lives in Signature Bridge camp.Given this situation HAI is focusing on five areas while working with them, and these areas of activities are; health, education, vocational training &amp; income generation, basic amenities and legal assistance. This project focuses on two, out of five, areas, i.e., education and vocational training &amp; income generation. 
 Proposed action plan:Education: At Majnu Ka Tila camp and Signature Bridge camp more than 180 children are receiving basic education at the local government schools. After arriving in India, the children were assigned to classes according to their age and not their academic level. This was problematic since many of the children had never received any formal schooling in Pakistan. As a result, many children fail their classes and chose to drop out of school discouraged and unmotivated to learn further. Remedial education classes and extracurricular support can bridge the gap between the class and comprehension of the student and ultimately improve academic performance, attendance and enrolment rates of the children.Proposed activities: ·        Rent site for education centre or construct semi-permanent centres ·        Identify children of school-going age (6-18) in the camp.·        Identify children enrolled in school ·        Identify children below 18 years who have dropped out of school in the camp·        Conduct assessment tests for children, refugee youth and adults to determine their academic standing ·        Prepare educational materials, content and modules based on the academic level of the students·        Enrol every school going child to remedial education centre·        Enrol every dropped out child to non-formal education centre   Vocational training and Income generation: Refugee women within the camp remain unemployed and restricted to household work. Women are skilled in traditional Sindhi embroidery (kadai) but limit their work for household purposes and have so far not been able to convert these skills into full scale income-generating activities. Those women that engage in providing tailoring services, confine the same to the camp limits due to lack of market linkages, resulting in limited, irregular and low income. There is a need for support (post completion of sewing and tailoring classes) for entrepreneurship &amp; business training, establishing market links for sale of products and establishing a group of women producers. Proposed activities: •         Continue training more women through the existing sewing centre of HAI•         Identify refugee women to operate the production centre – the project will primarily target refugee women who have completed or are enrolled as trainees in the HAI sewing and tailoring centre. The trainees will be grouped according to skill level (beginner and advanced learners)•         Arrange material resources (fabric, needles, thread, etc.)•         Arrange and assemble machinery (embroidery sewing machines) 
 In terms of education•          Achieve universalisation of education in both the camps in 2021•          Increase the number of children graduating to a higher class •          Decrease the number of children dropping out to zero by 40% by 2021In terms of vocational training &amp; Income generation·        At least 90 women will have upgraded their skills on sewing, embroidery, designing and marketing ·        At least 90 women will have acquired numerical literacy and skill on basic bookkeeping. ·        Women will have their own self-help group linked with a local bank ·        Refugee women will be able to set-up business ideas·        At least 50 women will become economically productive members of their families and the community ·        Micro financing will start in the camp

Improved quality of life of the migrants through focussed support on education and vocational skills

Seventy-five refugee families reside in the Signature Bridge refugee camp, Delhi and are living in the deplorable condition on the banks of Yamuna, lacking almost all basic amenities, including water, toilets and electricity. This camp is located in a forest, which makes them unsafe even during the daytime.Since there are no toilets, everyone is compelled to go to the forest to relieve themselves. Women and children especially are exposed to personal safety risks and open defecation takes a toll on their health and the environment.Another major problem is the access to drinking water. There are only three functional hand pumps in the camp and this water is contaminated. Camp residents are compelled to use water from the hand pumps due to the lack of other options. Due to using the contaminated water, health and skin conditions are rampant especially among women and children. Skin diseases including scabies and kidney stones have become common health issues due to the poor quality of water.  
 Access to clean drinking water and a hygienic sewage system are human rights and basic human needs. The lack of functioning toilets and inadequate hygiene pose a major health risk especially for an already vulnerable population. In order to address these problems, HAI is constructing nine, self-sustaining Ecosan toilets and installing three water filters to ensure basic human dignity and reduce health risks. Water filters will reduce the risk of water-borne diseases and allow for adequate clean water for consumption, cooking and hygiene requirements. Objectives:1.     To install at least three water filtration units to ensure access to safe water for drinking and other purposes2.     Construction of self-sustaining, eco-friendly nine ECOSAN toilets in the camp to ensure basic human dignity and reduce open-defecation and related health and hygiene risks3.     To ensure dignified access to sufficient and safe WASH services 
 Following impacts are expected:Construction of toilets will make the refugee camp open defecation free, and also significantly mitigate the protection risk to women. This activity will restore dignity among everyone's life, particularly among women. This will also help improve the overall community health in the camp. Installation of water filters will ensure reduction in water borne and skin diseases. It will also ensure availability of drinking water around the year.

Support refugees with clean drinking water and toilets

Facing persecution, discrimination and denial of human rights, portion of the minority population from Pakistan has been fleeing and seeking refuge in India since the time of the partition. The girls particularly felt unsafe and pressure to convert. One immediate negative coping mechanism was to drop out from schools. Most of these people owned land and did farming in Pakistan, which they found increasingly challenging due to radical groups. Generally, these refugees arrive on valid pilgrim visas, then seek extensions through long term visas with the intention of permanently settling in India as citizens. There are almost 400 such refugee settlements scattered around India. Delhi and Jodhpur have maximum numbers of the refugee population that have arrived in the last two decades. About 1,200 people are housed in five camps in Delhi. In Delhi, as of now 140 families are residing in the Majnu Ka Tila camp and 85 families are residing in Signature Bridge camp. In Jodhpur there are 21 camps in which around 18,000 non-citizen migrants and 12,000 citizen migrants have been staying. Out of these all camps in Jodhpur, the five camps are in dire need of support in means of livelihoods, education and legal aid.  
 <ol><li>Creation of training cum production centres for women</li><li>Skill training for adult refugee men/youth through skill training schemes and programmes </li><li>Marketing support to refugee businesses along with entrepreneurship &amp; business training </li><li>Creation of a remedial education centres for children of school-going age</li><li>Higher and tertiary education support programmes for refugee youth and adolescents </li><li>Adult education classes for refugees on language, literacy, numeracy and financial literacy </li><li>Creation of legal aid, awareness and documentation support centres in each camp </li></ol> 
 The proposal aims to work across five domains, i.e., education, health, livelihoods, basic amenities and legal assistance. Each child will be provided with the opportunity of primary, secondary and tertiary levels of education, so that they could get integrated as healthy citizens. Since men are unskilled and women, though highly skilled on traditional embroidery, have never used their skill for productive work, remain economically fragile. The project will introduce a range of skill building and income-generation opportunities for their economic self-reliance. For the other domains, the project will follow rights-based approach, so that the existing policies of the government create entitlements for them as well or come up with new policies. HAI has already established good linkages with the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) and National Commission for Scheduled Castes (NCSC) for this purpose.The project aims to ensure their comprehensive development through service delivery and policy reforms and also mitigating tensions with the host communities, so that they don't reman vulnerable with their refugee status, and eventually get integrated in India as healthy and productive citizens.
