“We received a distress call saying that a blind girl is being held captive by a woman and is being forced to beg. Our volunteers were able to rescue that girl and bring her to the Blind Welfare Society home for girls. We cared for her and educated her. Today that girl is a senior government official”, says Asha Bhola, President, Blind Welfare Society (BWS) as she recalls how her organisation has been able to transform lives.BWS has been a ray of hope for 40 such blind girls, many of whom have been abandoned by their families owing to their visual impairment. Sadly, the care, shelter and education for blind girls come at a cost, and BWS is unable to keep its work going. According to the nonprofit office bearer, “Many parents neglect their blind daughters and at times even sell them off for begging, etc. Even if the girl is from a well-to-do family, they feel providing education and care to a blind girl is a waste of money”. “What is the fault of an innocent child?”, she asks.Education, the only hope “These girls have no future without education. If they don’t receive education, they will remain uncared for. They will continue to be ignored by not just their families but even by society at large. Whatever I am today is only because of the education I received. But sadly, every blind girl is not as fortunate. “The major problem in society today is the stigma against mentally ill or mentally disabled people. Families feed and care for men who are mentally ill and keep them at home. But no one wants to help women with mental illnesses,” says N Vanitha Rengaraj, chairperson of Sharanalayam.Sharanalaym’s ‘Jothi’ is a sanctuary for over 100 women facing mental challenges. Many women were rehabilitated by the NGO, thanks to its facilities.Sharanalayam needs urgent support to take care of over 100 women. The turmoil had hit the life of one and all and Javed (Founder of HWOHL) wasn’t an exception!Javed was pursuing his college-level education when he became a victim of armed conflict in Kashmir. He was hit with a bullet that passed through his spine and left him wheelchair-bound for a lifetime. He was hospitalized for more than two years and multiple surgeries were performed during the stay. The young blood was now left at the mercy of God, the doctors gave up and raised up their hands; and asked Javed’s mother to wait for some miracle if he could move around.The transition from independent living to a dependent life had bothered Javed too much! His freedom had come to an end and was striving to see the life of others like him through their lens! Despite all the hardships, Javed didn’t give up and continued his education. He started free classes for the less privileged children of his neighborhood. People started to appreciate the courage of Javed and would remain available for any service. Years passed and people met Javed; who turned his dream into a mission i.e. to uplift the status of Persons with Disabilities in society through imparting education. A special school for children with disabilities was initiated in 2007 with just two blind girls in a rented room. Gradually, the blood and sweat of Javed paid off when the school was expanded into a developmental center focusing on the all-round development of Persons with Disabilities. The center is operational in a self-owned accessible building imparting education and other rehabilitation services to PWD across south Kashmir &amp; currently, more than 160 Children with different types of disabilities are getting education and rehabilitation services under one roof.Additionally, we are equally concerned about the protection of children under all circumstances. We have operated Child Helpline-CHILDLINE 1098 and have provided emergency response to 3147 children and many of them have been linked to long-term rehabilitation services as well. Moreover, we conduct awareness and sensitization programs/trainings/workshops with children, parents, stakeholders, and allied departments concerning children regarding child rights, issues about children, techniques of handling the situations/disclosure, referral pathways and linkages, etc.Currently, we are working in 50 villages of twin districts i.e. Anantnag and Kulgam wherein children are empowered with life skills, child rights/protection, and Mental Health and Psycho-social Support. Simultaneously, equal emphasis is laid upon parenting skills, Child Rights/Protection, Mental Health, and Psycho-social Support of communities in general and parents in particular.Javed’s contribution in the Social Sector has caught the attention of all and he has been felicitated many times.
