We rescued her a few years later, but by then, she had already endured unimaginable trauma. Her stories broke my heart. Children are kept in separate apartments where multiple men abuse them and get addicted to substances”, Aaboo says. Through his NGO Purnata, Aaboo is on a mission not just to rescue the victims from red-light areas but also to rehabilitate them and give them a fresh start in life. To date, he has saved 85 children and 60 women from red-light areas, but for him, the job is far from over. Humankind, a voluntary organization that deals in strengthening the exercise of Child Rights, with a particular focus on the Right to Development. It primarily provides necessary support to the learning process of underprivileged children. It is mandatory for these children to attend regular school. Humankind provides supplementary support to them after their regular school hours. The children are also educated in matters of health, hygiene and sanitation. Efforts are afoot to create awareness and concern for the environment. Furthermore, Humankind provides guidance for higher studies and vocational training to youth who have passed out of school, and also to adults of the community. For vocational training, another initiative viz. “Saksham” is being taken up. Under Saksham, Humankind provides vocational training, to begin with, in the trade of tailoring at a centre operating in a rented place in Gandhivas, a “basti” of hundereds of underprivileged families in Sabarmati area of Ahmedabad. Besides, the children are introduced to preliminary financial literacy. Children are taught to cultivate saving habit out of the pocket money they get from their parents. It also helps them wean away from bad habits. For this purpose, Humankind has come up with the idea of Kids’ Bank. Every Sunday, children deposit some amount in this informal bank which is managed by volunteers with the help of senior students.

There is a clear lack of skilled labour in the economy. Though human resources available in plenty, many of the people do not possess the skills which can enable them to earn their livelihood. Over the last ten years of social activities, Humankind has gradually come to realise that a large part of the beneficiaries after finishing primary and secondary education are not equipped adequately for securing gainful employment. Very few of them become capable enough to pursue college/university education. In order to equip those who cannot go beyond 10th or 12th-grade, we are providing training in certain skills. With a view to setting up the required facilities for the purpose, Humankind now approaches you for its support.

Our target is to train these children. Therefore, we propose to have the training centre close to their Bastis (slums) for easy accessibility. We have identified a proven source of training material and required hardware kit in a company named ‘SkillTrain’ based out of Chennai. SkillTrain’s training module and hardware kits are available for various trades. Based on our perception of the local market initially, we propose to start training courses in the following trades:1) Mobile Repairing 2) Basic Electrical 3) Home Appliances repair 4) Plumbing 5) Tailoring 6) Basiccomputer course and 7) Computer hardwareSkillTrain also facilitates the process for the students to obtain Government of India Modular Employability Skills Certification. 
 Humankind began its journey in 2009, with merely five school children of a Municipal school at Sabarmati, Ahmedabad. Initially, the children were entertained with indoor and outdoor games/ sports on Sundays in the school premises. Gradually the children were taught to keep themselves hygienically clean with regular bath, washed clothes, cut nails, tidy hair etc. As the number of children grew, they were persuaded to study under the guidance of Humankind volunteers, if they wanted to play the games/sports.After functioning in the school premises for four years, a real estate developer saw the earnestness of Humankind volunteers, in their purposeful work. In 2013 he was kind to offer the present premises at Nanakram Super Market, Ramnagar, Sabarmati, to Humankind for conducting its activities. With the help of donations from concerned citizens, business firms and large corporate entities, Humankind has been able to provide books, school bags with necessary kit components and to acquire our teaching and learning aids, computers and audio-visual equipment, furniture and fittings and sewing machines. At present, about 150 students are registered with Humankind. They are at Humankind from Monday to Friday between 4 pm to 7 pm for studies depending upon their respective school timings and on Sundays between 9 am to 12 noon for a playful fun time.It is worth mentioning that Humankind does the above work with the help of unpaid volunteers working on an honorary basis. These volunteers are drawn from the retired or working concerned citizens, the students who passed out of school and were beneficiaries of the services rendered by Humankind and Interns from various colleges.When the children progress to the level of grade 9th and 10th, they are enrolled in regular format, coaching classes. 70% of the coaching fees are borne by Humankind and balance 30% of the fees are paid by the student’s contribution. However, the beneficiary students are expected to provide 2 hours voluntary service in Humankind for 6 days/ week to help the other younger children from their own community if feasible.
