“We received a distress call saying that a blind girl is being held captive by a woman and is being forced to beg. Our volunteers were able to rescue that girl and bring her to the Blind Welfare Society home for girls. We cared for her and educated her. Today that girl is a senior government official”, says Asha Bhola, President, Blind Welfare Society (BWS) as she recalls how her organisation has been able to transform lives.BWS has been a ray of hope for 40 such blind girls, many of whom have been abandoned by their families owing to their visual impairment. Sadly, the care, shelter and education for blind girls come at a cost, and BWS is unable to keep its work going. “The major problem in society today is the stigma against mentally ill or mentally disabled people. Families feed and care for men who are mentally ill and keep them at home. But no one wants to help women with mental illnesses,” says N Vanitha Rengaraj, chairperson of Sharanalayam.Sharanalaym’s ‘Jothi’ is a sanctuary for over 100 women facing mental challenges. The Hyderabad, Karnataka area consists of 6 districts of Gulbarga, Bidar, Yadgir, Raichur, Koppal and Bellary, which, as a whole, is considered a backward region. Lack of basic amenities, illiteracy, and starvation are the major problems faced by the people here and the disabled community is not an exception to it. The social, educational and economic conditions of the disabled people are alarming. They are neglected by society, as well as by the government.Our association believes in the principle that “self-help is the best help”. Based on this theory, some like-minded handicap people came together in 1990 to form a registered society for themselves and hence, the “Hyderabad Karnataka Disabled Welfare Society” was established on 6th November 1990 under Registration of Societies Act, 1860.1.	Vision -The Hyderabad Karnataka Disabled Welfare Society believes that all people with disabilities can live with self-respect and dignity. Better facilities for education and training shall become available at the village level. No disabled person shall strive for employment, food clothing and shelter. Their human rights shall be protected, and a good quality of life shall be ensured.2. Mission -Our task is to achieve set goals by providing appropriate education, rehabilitation, intervention, training and advocacy which will lead to awareness, empowerment and employment of people with disabilities with the help and support of trained staff and caregivers.

Chhaya has been with us since she was 7 years old. Always a bright and curious child, she has blossomed into an academically gifted and multi-talented individual and is currently studying in the ninth year. She comes from a family of 6, and is of modest means, though this has not stopped her from pursuing anything to her interest such as sports, drama, debating, and other activities that shape a person's character. But Chhaya is different from most other girls her age! She suffers from visual disabilities that would normally impede her development. Hyderabad Karnataka Disabled Welfare Trust ensures her disability does not get in the way of her academic and professional journey. With the help of our donors, we provide the supportive environment required to prepare countless little girls like Chhaya for the real world. Not all credit is due to us! Chhaya draws inspiration from her older sisters, both of whom also suffer from visual disabilities. One of them is working in a bank while the other is pursuing her higher studies. Located in a facility that currently houses both a school and a hostel, HKDWS offers education up to the 10th grade for girls from underprivileged rural backgrounds. The selection process for these beneficiaries is meticulous, involving application scrutiny and home visits to ensure that those most in need are allowed to study and thrive. The school employs five teachers, including a physical education instructor who proudly noted the girls' participation and success in district-level sports events. These activities, along with annual cultural programs, not only showcase their talents but also build confidence and a sense of community among the students. During our visit to the construction site, we observed that the ground floor is already constructed, featuring essential facilities that promise a better learning and living environment for the girls. The move to the new building is eagerly anticipated by both students and staff, symbolizing a new chapter of opportunities. HKDWS construction update

Ayesha (name changed) is a little girl from Hipparga village, Kalaburagi district. Like two of her siblings, she is blind and perceived to be a burden on her family by society. Her parents, being underprivileged agricultural laborers, were not in a position to allow her to prove her capabilities and explore her potential. When Hyderabad Karnataka disabled welfare society learned of her situation through a survey, she was asked to enroll in our school; an offer her parents eagerly accepted so that she could be provided the care she needed to live a fulfilling and meaningful life. Although cautious initially, Ayesha has blossomed into an intelligent and zealous young girl. Proficient in Braille, singing, and playing chess, she has a bright future ahead of her and is eager to pursue her education at our school. However, Ayesha is just one among the many children who need our school to uplift their lives. Most blind children are simply abandoned by their parents, especially in rural settings. Through no fault of their own, little boys and girls are made to live a wretched life, abandoned by their caretakers and condemned to a miserable existence. Hyderabad Karnataka disabled welfare society needs a new building to extend its reach and give these poor children the life they deserve. Their own space to explore and learn is tantamount to giving the children what they need to develop their abilities to the fullest. HKDW Society has established a residential school for blind girls. The school is sheltering about 75 students currently, and as this is the only school in Gulbarga Division of Karnataka for blind girls, the influx of students is increasing year after year. In order to meet the requirements of increasing strength, additional classrooms, dormitories, playgrounds etc. are needed. At present, the school is functioning in a rented two storey building at Sundar Nagar locality, Kalaburagi (Gulbarga), Karnataka, India. This is an old building, so our priority is to ensure the safety and security of the children. Hence, we are constructing a new school building to accommodate more children to provide a visually impaired friendly environment with spacious dormitory, dining hall, high-tech classrooms, audio and Braille books library, Braille printing press, office rooms, playground, visitors’ hall etc. 
 Hyderabad Karnataka Disabled Welfare Society continues to be at the forefront of work in rural areas. Eye check-up camps and general health check-up camps for the disabled, with the help of Retired Medical Officers Association, Gulbarga, are being conducted regularly.The organization feels that lack of awareness among the public about the skills and potentialities of the disabled is the main cause of backwardness. Therefore, we organize awareness camps at the village level, taluk level and district level periodically. Apart from this, we are taking the help of mass media to educate the people about disability.The organization is working for the empowerment of visually impaired women. Keeping this in view, a free residential school for blind girls was started in 2007 at Gulbarga. 
 To be born as a girl is considered as a disadvantage in Indian families, and if the girl is born blind or loses eyesight due to any medical condition while growing up, her agony will be doubled. Realizing this fact the Society has started the residential school for blind girls to empower them to lead an independent life. We consider it our primary duty to provide a safe, secure and conducive environment to learn so as to nourish them to be responsible citizens of our country and contribute to the nation's economy. Hence, the Society is venturing to construct a well-furnished school building. After its completion, it will accommodate more than 100 blind girls where they can get quality education, skill development training, and many more talents.
