Human trafficking in India is a horrifying crisis. Thousands of victims, primarily women and girl children, are exploited in red-light areas. Over 10,659 cases were reported between 2018-2022, but experts say that these numbers are likely a fraction of the reality due to underreporting, yet they still do expose the magnitude of the crisis. Girls make up 71.4% of missing children in India and a large number of these girls end up at red-light areas. Sex trafficking is particularly gruesome, with girls as young as 12 sold for as little as a few thousand rupees.

Infant India runs a home called Anandgram that cares for 60 HIV-positive orphaned children from underprivileged backgrounds. Through no fault of their own, these orphans contracted HIV, a serious disease. Without parents or guardians, these children have no access to medicines, doctors and the HIV treatments needed to stay alive. Infant India is an NGO that takes in these orphans and provides them with a home, nutritious food, medication and education for the rest of their childhoods and sets them on a path to have better and healthier futures. HIV-positive orphaned children face harsh discrimination and are outcast and shunned by relatives, neighbours, schools and society as a whole. The NGO has even come across children who have been forcibly thrown out of their schools, once it is discovered that they are HIV-positive. But these children suffer from more than the lack of medication or even access to education. By focusing on holistic and long term care, the NGO provides all that a child needs. Infant India’s safe and loving shelter, food and medical care tends to the children’s basic needs and keeps them safe and well fed and gives them the vital medication their bodies require to fight the disease. The NGO also provides education and skills training to give the children a future in which they can be self-sufficient, financially independent and live dignified lives. But the NGO does not want the children to spend their lives alone, after having been abandoned at such young ages. So when the children become adults, the NGO arranges marriages with suitable partners, something that would be difficult to do on their own. Because of this thoughtful care, these marriages have resulted in the births of around 34 babies who are HIV-free. Each of these children contracted the virus through mother-to-child transmission. But through the NGO’s care, these children are able to become parents to HIV-negative children and live a full life.<img src="https://cfstatic.give.do/f0af0c9f-eb76-4f7c-a576-76eb7c9cc0da.webp" />The founders’ personal connection to HIV-positive orphansDatta Bargaje was working as a lab technician and came across two blood samples in the lab of a woman and her child, which showed an HIV-positive result. In a few weeks Datta Bargaje learned that the mother died, leaving the child orphaned. Without care or guardians, this HIV-positive child was doomed to discrimination and death. Help Datta Bargaje care for 60 orphans with HIV and give them a home, urgent medicines, food and education

One evening in September 2018, Nethra’s alcoholic husband doused her in kerosene, set her on fire, locked the door from outside, and walked away. Hearing her wails, neighbours came to Nethra’s rescue and took her to a government hospital. Despite third-degree burns, Nethra survived after months in the hospital. But she became almost immobile. She could hardly move her hands or head as her chin was almost fused to the neck. She survived on liquid and semi-solid food as she couldn’t chew or close her mouth. “My face was so severely disfigured that my mother hid all the mirrors at home so that I would not see myself,” recalls Nethra. As the low-income family couldn’t afford proper after-care or reconstructive surgeries, Nethra was getting suicidal when Agni Raksha, a Bangalore-based NGO came to her rescue. After multiple surgeries at the NGO’s ‘Safe Haven,’ its critical care unit, Nethra is back on her feet. She is trained in tailoring and now works odd jobs and takes care of her two children.Like Nethra, most burn victims who come to Agni Raksha belong to low-income families and almost 95% of them are women. While some are victims of severe forms of domestic violence by husbands, others try to commit suicide by immolating themselves because of constant harassment. But due to the pandemic and lack of funds, Agni Raksha run by Dr Prema Dhanraj, a burn victim herself, had to shut its free critical surgeries unit. It has been a huge blow to burn victims from low-income families. You can help Dr Prema reopen her free burn surgeries unit. Agni Raksha- A beacon of hope for burn survivorsHeaded by Dr Prema Dhanraj, the NGO has treated over 18,000 burn victims in over 15 years. While the NGO continues to provide out-patient facilities for burn victims it had to shut down ‘Safe Haven’ its critical unit, because of a lack of funds after Covid.“Covid was a body blow for us as we had to close Safe Haven. We have the building, beds and other facilities, but we don’t have funds to pay doctors and support staff or buy critical care equipment and medicines. I feel very bad for victims who require emergency treatment, reconstructive surgery and post-operative care. The most heartbreaking thing for me is when some burn victims are brought here first thinking that we still run Safe Haven,” says Dr Prema.Help Dr Prema reopen Safe Haven and start providing critical care and carry out surgeries on burn victims. I wish I could provide all the care they need at Agni Raksha,” says Dr Prema.Lifelong disability and disfigurements because of burns can also cause emotional problems such as depression, suicidal tendencies and nightmares. Founded in 2023, Imaara is a Chennai-based nonprofit on a mission to prevent gender-based violence (GBV) and restore survivor agency.Why GBV survivor support and prevention?In India, 98% of GBV survivors do not seek medical or legal support (NFHS-5, 2019-21), and the National Crime Records Bureau reveals only 4.4 lakh rape cases and 1.4 lakh domestic violence cases were officially reported (NCRB, 2022) — indicating only a fraction of the actual, given underreporting due to stigma and systemic barriers. The most devastating implication of them all is economic exclusion: survivors face 3x higher unemployment rates than non-survivors (World Bank, 2021). Stigma and victim blaming/shaming along with cost incurrences pushes survivors to stay silent and not seek timely help. Untreated trauma affects their ability to fully engage in life, impacting educational pursuits, career growth, and relationships.
