And the worst affected are the children who grow up in red-light areas and are subjected to constant abuse and violence. “The sight of a 12-year-old girl being gang-raped by a group of men near a house l haunts me to this date. I was filled with anguish and resolved to do something,” says Girish Kulkarni who has made it his life’s mission to rescue children from red light areas and give them a safe and secure childhood. In the last 3 decades Girish has saved over 1100 girls from a life of abuse in red-light areas, giving them a loving home, education and medical care. I had even seen my friend’s 15-year-old sister and 70-year-old grandmother being forced to do sex work for the price of a cup of tea”, recalls Girish. “I started by merely feeding and teaching children of sex workers initially with the intention of giving them some respite from the horrors of life of abuse in red-light areas. Gradually more and more mothers started coming to me and asked me to take their children away, even if it was just for a couple of hours,” he further adds.The work that Girish started in his youth gradually grew to become a movement, with many more joining his cause. That was the day I knew my mission in life was to get these children out of the hell-like conditions in red-light areas. The incidences of child sexual abuse are on the rise. The NCRB data shows that there has been an 82% increase in child rapes cases in the last 2 years and most of the time, abusers are known to the child. Children who have undergone sexual or aggravated sexual assault are often in need of trauma counseling, care, support and protection. The victims are blamed and shamed, they are pressurized to change statements. There are also such girls who had become pregnant and had to undergo extreme traumatic conditions of delivery and surrendering their children at such a tender age. Unfortunately in India, we do not have enough effective support systems which cater to the need of survivors of abuse. Children who are victims of abuse are placed in child care institutions which lack professional expertise to deal with complex issues of trauma, moral and legal support. Therefore, Inchara, besides creating awareness on child sexual abuse, also decided to start a home for such children with an objective of trauma counseling, therapeutic interventions, education, legal and other necessary support systems. Inchara Home for Children caters to exclusive needs of the children who have undergone sexual abuse, benefitting not only the children in Mangalore but also from surrounding districts. 
 Inchara Home For Children was established in October 2017 in a rented premise, The necessary permissions have been taken from the department of women and child to run this as a child care institution. The home has a capacity to accommodate 25 children. The center has catered to over 50 children (girls) and currently 20 children(girls) are residing in and continuing with their education. Children are provided with nutritious food and are enrolled into private convent schools for their education. Activities such as trauma counseling, dance therapies, art therapies and crafts classes are conducted on regular basis to overcome trauma and normalize their lives. Life skills, soft skills and vocational training is also being provided to keep the children engaged. 
 This first of its kind intervention in the city, Inchara has bagged appreciation from the child welfare committee and district child protection units. Children are being referred from other districts as well. Children who have discontinued education have started their education again. Talents of these children are being nurtured and their energies are diverted towards productive activities such as arts and crafts. Their dances performances, street plays at public events organized by the district administration indicate the changes brought about by the organization's intervention. The center is also attracting young volunteers to contribute their time and engage the children further.

Inchara Foundation is working towards rehabilitation of girls who are in need of care and support especially who have undergone various forms of violence and abuse. Girls who have faced violence need our support for a long term intervention, one of the interventions proposed in to make them self-dependent.Project SUI DHAGA by Inchara Foundation is to create sustainable livelihood for our beneficiaries (Girls)and empower them with regular income. In order to build their skills and help them to become self-reliant we are setting up a tailoring unit, where girls will be engaged in producing masks, cloth bags and other items. 
 A tailoring unit is being set up in order to impart the skills to these girls. Currently we have two machines and we need two machines. We also need to support them with raw materials and an instructor to train them. The income generated through this project will transferred to these girls’ bank accounts for their future. This will not only help them be independent but also be helping to sustain their families 
 COVID 19 has indeed brought us distress, however it has given us also some opportunities for reflection and action. The girls will be empowered and made independent. Once they turn 21 years they can be self-sustained with a tailoring unit of their own. Inchara shall help them to market their products. Through this training they will not only be able to change lives of themselves but also impact their families in the long run
