“The major problem in society today is the stigma against mentally ill or mentally disabled people. Families feed and care for men who are mentally ill and keep them at home. But no one wants to help women with mental illnesses,” says N Vanitha Rengaraj, chairperson of Sharanalayam.Sharanalaym’s ‘Jothi’ is a sanctuary for over 100 women facing mental challenges. It started with taking care of children in difficult conditions. It slowly started taking care of mentally challenged women. Sharanalayam has come a long way since that time, with hundreds of children and women being taken care of by the NGO in the last two decades. Many women were rehabilitated by the NGO, thanks to its facilities.Sharanalayam needs urgent support to take care of over 100 women. The organisation also aspires to take care of many more mentally ill women in the coming months and years. “We received a distress call saying that a blind girl is being held captive by a woman and is being forced to beg. Our volunteers were able to rescue that girl and bring her to the Blind Welfare Society home for girls. We cared for her and educated her. Today that girl is a senior government official”, says Asha Bhola, President, Blind Welfare Society (BWS) as she recalls how her organisation has been able to transform lives.BWS has been a ray of hope for 40 such blind girls, many of whom have been abandoned by their families owing to their visual impairment. Sadly, the care, shelter and education for blind girls come at a cost, and BWS is unable to keep its work going. According to the nonprofit office bearer, “Many parents neglect their blind daughters and at times even sell them off for begging, etc. Even if the girl is from a well-to-do family, they feel providing education and care to a blind girl is a waste of money”. “What is the fault of an innocent child?”, she asks.Education, the only hope “These girls have no future without education. If they don’t receive education, they will remain uncared for. They will continue to be ignored by not just their families but even by society at large. Whatever I am today is only because of the education I received. But sadly, every blind girl is not as fortunate. Differently Abled

Through a structured incubation process, entrepreneurs with disabilities will be provided with training, returnable seed capital assistance, procurement, branding and continuous mentorship.

Livelihood

Livelihood generation is the primary challenge for Persons with Disabilities (PwDs) in India. There is a lack of comprehensive Entrepreneur Development Programs that cater to all 21 disability types. Many PwDs, especially in rural areas, face technological and financial barriers. Some initiatives that offer vocational training cater to limited disability types, and lack accessible content delivery methods. PwDs are often denied loans, and there is no link to connect stakeholders leaving many PwDs unemployed or confined to low-paying, informal jobs with limited opportunities for growth.The Inclusive Divyangjan Entrepreneur Association (IDEA) is a social enterprise dedicated to the economic empowerment of PwDs. We focus on 1) employment for 10,000 PwDs by connecting industry and grassroots NGOs 2) Incubating 5,000 entrepreneurs through a comprehensive program. IDEA's mission is to foster collaboration among individuals and organizations working toward this goal, leveraging data and research to support its initiatives. For this we have built a platform model enabling physical and digital interaction. IDEA's Entrepreneurship Development Program (EDP) is central to its mission of economic empowerment of PwDs.Our 3D solution is designed in a structured manner and covers accessible incubation, technology, mentorship and a community-owned network that offers continuous support. The Entrepreneurship Development Program caters to all 21 disability categories, providing training, seed funding, and mentorship. A local network of EwDs (Entrepreneurs with Disabilities) fosters shared procurement and problem-solving. Through technology, we make content scalable and accessible, empowering PwDs to take on opportunities.Our solution has increased the Average Annual Per Capita Income of 1,064 EwDs by 77%. 47% of EwDs hail from rural areas and 37.3% are women. 33% of our EwDs have 80%-100% disability, their journeys are truly inspiring.The DHAN Network (community of EwDs), has grown to 700+ members and generated ₹40 lakhs in community funds.
