Cattle, bred for profit and abandoned after they stop producing milk, are often found malnourished, injured or sick on city streets. Many face bitter winters, starvation and death in road accidents - a sad fate for cows in a country where they are revered by lakhs of people. To save cows from such a sad end, Swami Ishwar Das started Shree Krishnayan Desi Gaushala, currently home to 18,000+ abandoned cows. But with the rising costs of fodder and medicines, he is struggling to provide the quality of care such mistreated animals deserve. “It was in 2010 when I witnessed abandoned cows from the streets in Uttarakhand being transported in a truck. The cows were administered anesthesia and stacked one above the other like lifeless goods. When me and a few of my acquaintances brought the cows off the truck, two of them died before my eyes and that sight shook me to the core. It was then that I started Shree Krishnayan Gaushala with 11 abandoned cows in a small donated land,” says Swami Ishwar Das.Swami Ishwar Das is unable to bear the rising cost of nutrition and medical care for injured cows and needs support to continue to save these voiceless animals. Darshan, the founder, started Prayas in the 90s when he saw the atrocities committed against helpless animals that went uncared for. Since then, his tireless leadership has inspired a close-knit community of volunteers who make sure the animals of Surat are looked after. Prayas uses advanced technology to streamline the rescue process, minimizing the time required to save animals. These modern tools enhance their ability to respond to cries for help and efficiently coordinate volunteers' rescue efforts. A WhatsApp link is also available to speed up the resolution of problems. They also engage in animal rights awareness campaigns and hold training programs to educate pet owners. Darshan and his team of passionate animal lovers do not discriminate. Animals of all kinds including but not limited to birds, cows, snakes, and monkeys are rescued. Visit Date: 27th March 2024Visited by: Nehal Negi, Senior Associate In our visit to PFA Uttarakhand's facility in Rudraprayag, we witnessed firsthand the dedication and care provided to working animals, especially equines, who have suffered from neglect and abuse.Our visit to the infirmary at Pata, Rudraprayag, highlighted PFA Uttarakhand's collaboration with SPCA to offer relief to equines employed at the Kedarnath Yatra. This facility, repurposed from a school provided by the government, is where we saw the tangible outcomes of PFA's work: from ensuring equines have covered shelters and warm, clean drinking water to providing medical care for injured animals. The team’s effort to maintain regular health check-ups and restrict equine movement to safeguard their well-being is commendable. The story of a 20-year-old equine who lost vision in one eye and was mistreated by his owner was particularly moving. This case, now in court, underscores the complex challenges faced in rescuing and rehabilitating these animals. PFA Uttarakhand’s intervention not only saved the equine but also highlighted the ongoing need for awareness and training among locals and veterinarians. PFA Uttarakhand’s work in rescuing, treating, and advocating for working animals in Uttarakhand represents a beacon of hope. However, the challenges are ongoing, and the need for resources is ever-present. The organization's work with equines during the Kedarnath Yatra and their broader efforts to improve the lives of animals across Uttarakhand require our support. There are over 2 lakh pet shops across India where live animals are traded and the transactions are also rampant on online portals. Despite the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (Pet Shop) Rules 2018, illegal trade in dogs, cats, rabbits, hamsters, Indian &amp; exotic birds, turtles and other wildlife, carries on with impunity. The enforcement of laws requires following up with the regulators and creating facilities for rescued animals to be safely housed. 
 We are working in 5 States (Uttarakhand, Maharashtra, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and Delhi) to ensure that animals are rescued from the pathetic conditions in which they are bred and sold as pets. Actions include preparing comprehensive reports of violations, taking complaints to relevant authorities, ensuring action against pet shop owners and rescuing and rehabilitation of animals. 
 The program will ensure that dozens of dogs across the country will be pulled out of slavery and given the medical attention and love they deserve.Capacity will be built within local law enforcement to tackle similar cases and ensure that the rule of law is abided by.
