If they are ill or injured, they are never given treatment. They are tied up in small spaces. Where there is space barely for 10, they keep 20, 30 or even 40 buffaloes. And these animals spend their entire life in these painful conditions", says Dr Asher Jesudoss, Director, People For Animals (PFA) Public Policy Foundation, who has been fighting abuse of farmed animals.According to him, several crude, illegal and violent methods/practices are used to extract milk from cattle, which leave thousands with illnesses. “Labour pains are induced in cattle by injecting drugs; they are made to forcefully let down milk twice a day unnaturally. Their calves are pulled away and are not allowed to drink their mother’s milk. Cattle, bred for profit and abandoned after they stop producing milk, are often found malnourished, injured or sick on city streets. Many face bitter winters, starvation and death in road accidents - a sad fate for cows in a country where they are revered by lakhs of people. To save cows from such a sad end, Swami Ishwar Das started Shree Krishnayan Desi Gaushala, currently home to 18,000+ abandoned cows. But with the rising costs of fodder and medicines, he is struggling to provide the quality of care such mistreated animals deserve. “It was in 2010 when I witnessed abandoned cows from the streets in Uttarakhand being transported in a truck. The cows were administered anesthesia and stacked one above the other like lifeless goods. When me and a few of my acquaintances brought the cows off the truck, two of them died before my eyes and that sight shook me to the core. It was then that I started Shree Krishnayan Gaushala with 11 abandoned cows in a small donated land,” says Swami Ishwar Das.Swami Ishwar Das is unable to bear the rising cost of nutrition and medical care for injured cows and needs support to continue to save these voiceless animals. Darshan, the founder, started Prayas in the 90s when he saw the atrocities committed against helpless animals that went uncared for. Since then, his tireless leadership has inspired a close-knit community of volunteers who make sure the animals of Surat are looked after. Prayas uses advanced technology to streamline the rescue process, minimizing the time required to save animals. These modern tools enhance their ability to respond to cries for help and efficiently coordinate volunteers' rescue efforts. A WhatsApp link is also available to speed up the resolution of problems. They also engage in animal rights awareness campaigns and hold training programs to educate pet owners. Darshan and his team of passionate animal lovers do not discriminate. Animals of all kinds including but not limited to birds, cows, snakes, and monkeys are rescued. Prayas employs a full-time veterinarian to look after the medicines and rehabilitation of injured animals until they are fit to rejoin their natural environment. Check out the milestones we have achieved so far: ➜ Cattle Welfare in Delhi<ul><li>Visited 148 dairies and 3 unauthorized dairy colonies.</li><li>Documented conditions of over 10,000 cattle, including those abandoned or in unlicensed dairies.</li><li>Highlighted the issue to authorities, resulting in the formation of a multi-departmental committee to develop an SOP to address the issue of abandoned and unlicensed cattle.</li><li>This intervention has the potential to impact at least 20,000 cattle.</li></ul> ➜ Combating Lumpy Skin Disease (LSD)<ul><li>Carried out detailed research and analyzed the factors contributing to LSD. Around 32,00,000 cattle in India have been affected by LSD between 2019 and February 2023.</li><li>Accordingly, a comprehensive SOP was developed focusing on vector control, hygiene protocols, and cattle health monitoring to reduce the likelihood of LSD.</li><li>Proposed the use of Unique Identification Numbers (UINs) on cattle, allowing the State Animal Husbandry Department to trace cattle status and health.</li></ul> ➜ Improving Pig Farms in Uttar Pradesh and Haryana<ul><li>Conducted on-site visits to 53 pig farms (31 in UP and 22 in Haryana).</li><li>Found pigs living in poor conditions, with inadequate ventilation and hygiene.</li><li>Compiled reports that led State Pollution Control Boards to issue directives for improving conditions, impacting over 7,000 pigs.</li></ul> ➜ Delhi-Specific Handbook on Animal Protection Laws<ul><li>Initiated the development of a handbook tailored to Delhi's specific needs.</li><li>Included important statutes, court citations, and best practices for enforcing animal protection laws.</li><li>The handbook will be distributed across 18 District Headquarters, the Delhi Police Academy, and Special Branch Offices, potentially impacting over 3,22,000 cattle, 76,346 pigs, and 1,37,301 other animals.</li></ul> Your donations are making a real difference. There are over 2 lakh pet shops across India where live animals are traded and the transactions are also rampant on online portals. Despite the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (Pet Shop) Rules 2018, illegal trade in dogs, cats, rabbits, hamsters, Indian &amp; exotic birds, turtles and other wildlife, carries on with impunity. The enforcement of laws requires following up with the regulators and creating facilities for rescued animals to be safely housed. 
 We are working in 5 States (Uttarakhand, Maharashtra, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and Delhi) to ensure that animals are rescued from the pathetic conditions in which they are bred and sold as pets. Actions include preparing comprehensive reports of violations, taking complaints to relevant authorities, ensuring action against pet shop owners and rescuing and rehabilitation of animals. 
 The program will ensure that dozens of dogs across the country will be pulled out of slavery and given the medical attention and love they deserve.Capacity will be built within local law enforcement to tackle similar cases and ensure that the rule of law is abided by.
