I had even seen my friend’s 15-year-old sister and 70-year-old grandmother being forced to do sex work for the price of a cup of tea”, recalls Girish. “I started by merely feeding and teaching children of sex workers initially with the intention of giving them some respite from the horrors of life of abuse in red-light areas. Gradually more and more mothers started coming to me and asked me to take their children away, even if it was just for a couple of hours,” he further adds.The work that Girish started in his youth gradually grew to become a movement, with many more joining his cause. “I saw a girl, barely 7 or 8, being pushed into flesh trade. Her cries for help still echo in my ears. There were men as old as 60 r*ping the innocent child. The India Sponsorship Committee was established in 1967, and since then has continued to evolve in the sphere of nurturing the underprivileged children in Pune and Lonavala and work for their holistic development.Its flagship project, Antar Bharati Balgram, was established in 1972, and today boasts of 10 sadans (homes) where nearly 100 distressed/deprived children (in need of safe shelter and a conducive environment for academic and holistic pursuit) grow up in an abode similar to normal familial homes.Today the Balgram campus includes the Antar Bharati Balgram School, from KG to Std.X, following the state SSC Board. It is a State of Art English medium school and conforms to the guidelines laid down by the RTE Act.The Technology integrated campus is a perfect place for children to explore and expand their horizons. To ensure the complete rehabilitation process of the Balgram children, they are inducted in the Sarathi program which prepares them from the age of 13 years towards meaningful employment opportunities by engaging in career counselling, aptitude test  and skill based workshops etc.In 1980, the Pune Urban Community Development Project was established in Yerwada. The main focus was to ensure that the children of migrant labourers on the periphery of the city were given an opportunity to study and did not enter the world of child labour in the brick kilns where their parents worked. Today more than 8000 children have had the opportunity of education and lead a better life.Pune project has thereafter focused on areas of Child Rights, Gender Sensitization, Women Empowerment and Early Childhood and Nutrition programs, and continue their success in all these areas each year.Currently there are two programs running in Pune namely Aakar- for the wellbeing of Brick kiln workers’ children and Saksham - for creating livelihood opportunities for young women of slum communities.Upon achieving a milestone of completion of 50 years in the field of ensuring education for the underprivileged, we are assured that every child who has been in our fold is living a life much better having been given the opportunity of Education. Our multifold approach which is child centric ensures that a child or youth develops to his/her full potential and becomes a contributing member of the society.This forms the base of a rapidly growing nation.

Towards ensuring them a complete education and preparing them for the future, we also have on the same campus, the Antar Bharati Balgram School, which is a government recognised English medium school from KG to Std.X, under the state SSC Board. We also have a government ITI which imparts training to the rural youth in the trades of welding and electrical fields.In Pune, we are the pioneers in establishing educational classes for the children of migrant labourers of the brick kilns on the periphery of the city. Here basic education is imparted to the children, and efforts are made to enroll them in mainstream schools nearby since more than 30 years. Other activities include, gender sensitization, rights of the child, women empowerment and early childhood awareness programmes. Today, over 1000 children of Balgram are settled well in life, earning a good salary, and settled in society. We try to ensure that the children complete their school education, and thereafter they choose their future, either with further studies or with vocational career choices, till they are financially stable.In Pune too, over, 500 children have completed basic education and have been guided in a choice of careers.Gender awareness and child rights is a more recent endeavour and the children are today aware of their rights, and ensure a life free of sexual and drug abuse, child marriage and other social evils.Women empowerment ensures that the women are financially independent and can make choices to their liking. We plan to introduce more career choices in the near future.
