For a mother who has spent her entire life loving and raising her child, being beaten and mercilessly thrown out onto the streets by her own son is too heartbreaking to overcome. But this is a common story among the elderly residents of the Guru Vishram Vridh Ashram. “I’ve seen mothers in old and torn clothes, their bodies smelling and their hands and feet rotting and covered in maggots,” shares Dr. G.P. Bhagat, founder of the ashram. These abandoned elderly men and women lay starving on the streets hoping for someone to rescue them from their suffering. The Guru Vishram Vridh Ashram has a dedicated rescue team that saves the elderly from the streets and gives them immediate medical care upon their arrival at the home. To tend to the multiple health complications of the seniors, the home has a medical facility with doctors and nurses, a physiotherapy unit, a pathology lab, a digital X-ray monitoring machine and a pharmacy to provide 24-hour care to older adults anytime they require assistance, even during emergencies. Did you know a child's education depends primarily on vision as 80% of what a child learns is visually processed? In India, vision impairment from refractive error is a serious problem, affecting 1 in 20 children. That's over 1 million children who need glasses. Many underprivileged children go untreated due to the lack of awareness and lack of access to eye care services. 
 This is a huge problem, but there is a solution. In most cases, a pair of spectacles is all it takes to correct a child's vision and help them see well. 'Eye See and I Learn' is a campaign to screen the vision of underprivileged school children from across India and provide FREE SPECTACLES to those who need them. 
 Preventing ‘preventable’ blindness through timely intervention remains a key priority for IVI. The project will help restore good vision to those in need, especially for underprivileged children to see better, stay in school longer, learn better and have a chance for a better future.

Eye See and I Learn

Unprecedented monsoon has wreaked death and devastation in the state of Kerala. Such flooding has not been seen in the last 100 years. It has left 12 of 14 districts of the state affected with large-scale damage to life and property. The financial burden which the devastating floods has caused is estimated to be over 30,000 crore rupees according to the initial estimate. More than 12,00,000 people are now homeless, with their livelihood means being severely compromised. With the rescue operations now giving way to rehabilitation services, it is imperative that eye health among the affected population will take a back seat because of more important aspects like home, food and getting to work that people will have to prioritize. Lending a helping hand by providing free spectacles to those who lost their glasses during this calamity will prove to be one of the important rehabilitative actions that will help them to get back to their priorities. 
 IVI has a strong track record in organizing vision screening programs across the country. We have reached out to over 200 thousand people from different parts of the country and have provided them with free glasses. We would like to organize vision screening programs to provide free glasses to the flood victims in four identified districts in Kerala in the initial stage. We seek your support to reach a minimum of 10000 people, and provide spectacles free of cost in Ernakulam, Kozhikode, Pathanamthitta and Trivandrum districts. 
 10000 people will benefit from such an initiative. With the calamity paving way to change of immediate priorities, the support will ensure one less thing to worry about for the flood victims for the near future. Not to mention the added advantage of getting free spectacles too. From the 10000 screened approximately, about 5500 people will receive free spectacles with your support.
