“The major problem in society today is the stigma against mentally ill or mentally disabled people. Families feed and care for men who are mentally ill and keep them at home. But no one wants to help women with mental illnesses,” says N Vanitha Rengaraj, chairperson of Sharanalayam.Sharanalaym’s ‘Jothi’ is a sanctuary for over 100 women facing mental challenges. It slowly started taking care of mentally challenged women. Sharanalayam has come a long way since that time, with hundreds of children and women being taken care of by the NGO in the last two decades. Many women were rehabilitated by the NGO, thanks to its facilities.Sharanalayam needs urgent support to take care of over 100 women. The organisation also aspires to take care of many more mentally ill women in the coming months and years. “We received a distress call saying that a blind girl is being held captive by a woman and is being forced to beg. Our volunteers were able to rescue that girl and bring her to the Blind Welfare Society home for girls. We cared for her and educated her. Today that girl is a senior government official”, says Asha Bhola, President, Blind Welfare Society (BWS) as she recalls how her organisation has been able to transform lives.BWS has been a ray of hope for 40 such blind girls, many of whom have been abandoned by their families owing to their visual impairment. Sadly, the care, shelter and education for blind girls come at a cost, and BWS is unable to keep its work going. If they don’t receive education, they will remain uncared for. They will continue to be ignored by not just their families but even by society at large. Whatever I am today is only because of the education I received. But sadly, every blind girl is not as fortunate. Indian Association for the Blind (IAB), based in Madurai, South India, is a well-known non-profit organization working at the grassroots for the rehabilitation of people with visual challenges.It was established in 1985 by visually challenged activist S.M.A Jinnah and a group of like-minded visually challenged people with a vision to empower visually challenged people become self-reliant by providing comprehensive rehabilitation, education and employment opportunities. IAB has a special focus on the socio economically disadvantaged visually challenged children and adults, particularly those from rural areas. .Since its inception, IAB has educated and rehabilitated more than 30000 visually challenged children and youths mainly from rural Tamil Nadu. At present more than 2500 visually challenged children and youths, are being supported by IAB to pursue their dreams of self-reliance and life of dignity.IAB has been the pioneer in empowering the visually challenged towards self reliance through the initiatives in the field of Education, Career and Skills Training, Residential and support services.In recognition of its exemplary work in the field of disability, IAB was conferred the “National Award for the Best Institution” by Government of India.

The visually challenged children in rural areas are being deprived of appropriate education, food and proper living conditions because of their weak economic status and lack of affordability by their families. Their parents are unable to support their needs due to their less awareness about education and poverty. Also, the standards of education, living and food in their villages is very poor. The surroundings and the environment in which they live, is not suitable for them to lead a good life. They are struggling for their basic and essential needs. 
 This project will help solve the problems of lack of access to education, proper living conditions and healthy food. Your valuable support can help us to provide special care for visually challenged students to reach their goals. We will focus on their skill building which will in turn boost up their self-esteem. With utter dedication, they will be able to become educated, competent and self-reliant individuals leading a dignified life. 
 The long term impact of our programme is imparting behavioural and attitudinal change in the people. People in rural areas still consider any disability as a curse of god and they shun the diabled child away, considering him/her a liability.
