For a mother who has spent her entire life loving and raising her child, being beaten and mercilessly thrown out onto the streets by her own son is too heartbreaking to overcome. But this is a common story among the elderly residents of the Guru Vishram Vridh Ashram. “I’ve seen mothers in old and torn clothes, their bodies smelling and their hands and feet rotting and covered in maggots,” shares Dr. G.P. Bhagat, founder of the ashram. These abandoned elderly men and women lay starving on the streets hoping for someone to rescue them from their suffering. The Guru Vishram Vridh Ashram has a dedicated rescue team that saves the elderly from the streets and gives them immediate medical care upon their arrival at the home. To tend to the multiple health complications of the seniors, the home has a medical facility with doctors and nurses, a physiotherapy unit, a pathology lab, a digital X-ray monitoring machine and a pharmacy to provide 24-hour care to older adults anytime they require assistance, even during emergencies. Most of Sharanalayam’s children have ‘V’ as their initial. The ‘V’ stands for ‘Vanitha,’ the founder of the NGO. For the orphaned and the abandoned kids, Vanitha is simply ‘Thaiamma’ (mother). One of them is V Dhanushya, 18, who is studying nursing. “Thaiamma has taken care of me since I was six months old. She promised the mother that she would take care of the baby. “The baby hardly had any strength. She used to be called ‘insect’ by the people in the neighbourhood. The doctor said that she might not survive beyond a month. But she did for over a year, under my care. I named her Shakthi,” recalls Vanitha.Sharanalayam has come a long way since that time, with hundreds of children being taken care of by the NGO in the last two decades. Human trafficking in India is a horrifying crisis. Thousands of victims, primarily women and girl children, are exploited in red-light areas. Over 10,659 cases were reported between 2018-2022, but experts say that these numbers are likely a fraction of the reality due to underreporting, yet they still do expose the magnitude of the crisis. Girls make up 71.4% of missing children in India and a large number of these girls end up at red-light areas. Sex trafficking is particularly gruesome, with girls as young as 12 sold for as little as a few thousand rupees.

Misconceptions about HIV affect the lives of people with HIV. They are often treated with discrimination and social exclusion. Datta Bargaje continues to make every effort to give children living with HIV who are orphans a caring home with good quality education. Our NGO is situated in a remote place, 12 km away from the city on a mountain. Currently, there are 75 HIV-infected children and widows living here. There are 12 volunteers working tirelessly 24*7 providing care and support to these children. we are a NGO that functions totally on the support of public participation and yet we have not received any help from Government. But we do not have a proper residence/living quarters for these dedicated and selfless volunteers. Due to this, we may face a scarcity of such volunteers in future. 
 We plan to build living quarters/residences with all basic amenities for our volunteers enabling them to focus on our mission to provide love, support and care to these HIV-infected orphans. 
 We believe that taking care of the basic needs of our volunteers like living quarters, will provide them with security and more enthusiasm to work for these needy children.
