Most of Sharanalayam’s children have ‘V’ as their initial. The ‘V’ stands for ‘Vanitha,’ the founder of the NGO. For the orphaned and the abandoned kids, Vanitha is simply ‘Thaiamma’ (mother). One of them is V Dhanushya, 18, who is studying nursing. “Thaiamma has taken care of me since I was six months old. Vanitha has also been taking care of abandoned HIV-infected and mentally challenged kids. The first child to be brought to Sharanalayam was a baby of four, who was mentally challenged, and her mother chained the daughter when she went out to work.When Vanitha came to know about this child, she went to inquire and saw that the baby was in a horrible state. She promised the mother that she would take care of the baby. “The baby hardly had any strength. She used to be called ‘insect’ by the people in the neighbourhood. The doctor said that she might not survive beyond a month. But she did for over a year, under my care. I named her Shakthi,” recalls Vanitha.Sharanalayam has come a long way since that time, with hundreds of children being taken care of by the NGO in the last two decades. Many have become professionals in various fields, including medical care, engineering, counselling, banking, etc.Sharanalayam needs urgent support to take care of 80 children under its care. However, for much of India - the demographic dividend can be seen as the dividend declared but not paid. The ‘youth bulge ‘of the country is beginning to appear more like a challenge- with unemployment rising, economic disparities more glaring and the tinderbox of violence already for the fireworks. With recent studies suggesting that a youth bulge can lead to civil conflict, creating social conditions to ensure that youth are employed or are linked to a purposeful national or global peacebuilding or development agenda is crucial.’As uncertainty looms large across the globe and the young people in India struggle with their own aspirations, social pressures, and economic insecurities. This often results in young people living in a state of limbo- suspended animation -as Jeffery Craig observes in his book – “Time Pass: Youth, class and the politics of waiting in India– “Social and economic changes around the globe have propelled increasing numbers of people into situations of chronic waiting, where promised access to political freedoms, social goods, or economic resources is delayed, often indefinitely “. These stretches of waiting are often punctuated by instances of violent conflicts and hate crimes and conflicts around identities – religious, ethnic and caste are escalating.  Young people –those hailing from Dalit, Muslim and Adivasi communities, those from geographically remote areas and with lack of access and the ones with disabilities -are in even more vulnerable situation/s. They are often they are in conflict with their own community as well as with the ‘other’. In this context, adolescent girls and young women are the most disadvantaged with gender-based discrimination making their everyday life difficult. In this VUCA (Volatile Uncertain Complex and Ambivalent) world where the impact from the outside is inevitable - resilience is the keyword. When individuals, families, and communities proactively engage, respond to challenges and recover quickly they are resilient ecologies. These ecologies depend a lot on the way leadership is imagined and nurtured. Yes- there are islands of hope and possibilities, individuals and communities rising to respond to emerging challenges. 
 Creating effective and sensitive youth community leaders at 12 blocks in 7 districts of Gujarat states. Youth leaders from within the community can inspire and strengthen other young people and the community at large. These youth leaders can facilitate processes within the community to enhance resilience and democratization of various platforms at their local institutions of governance and other fora. Work to nurture and support the emergence of 200-350 youth leaders from 150 locations (140 villages and 10 towns) in 12 blocks from seven districts in Gujarat. These leaders would represent diversities –to create inclusive ecologies who will take up leadership around issues of their concerns and of their communities through their civic actions.Key focus areas the youth leaders would address would include challenging the dominant narrative with reason and reclaiming the autonomy to charter a life path for self and others. This will include building in them.·      Capacity for critical thinking and empowered sensitivity·      Ability to ensure financial and livelihood security·      Skills for communication, mobilization, and organizing other community members·      At least one-third of the leaders would be girls and young women.·      The success indicator for the leaders would be the following·      Demonstrate a clear understanding of the constitutional values·      Mobilizing 20 youth volunteers to organize events and build community linkages·      Enhancing the knowledge base and skill sets of these volunteers – 3 workshops/ sessions in the community with the youth facilitator·      Promote greater access to rights and entitlements·      Organize two to three community events such as sports/ cultural events·      Raise at least two or three critical questions every year – not entitlement related but challenging the basic assumptions·      Promote the culture of debate, dialogue and appreciation of diverse viewpoints and ideologies.·      Lead a public campaign on issues of social relevance  
 Sustainable community-based youth leadership that is taking up leadership and addressing issues their communities/areas are facing. Also, to nurture active citizens committed to constitutional values and taking stands locally at the time of the violation of constitutional fabric and rule of law in the society; thereby contributing to a process of nurturing a violence-free, equitable and peaceful social life for all citizens irrespective of their socio - eco-cultural backgrounds.
