“We received a distress call saying that a blind girl is being held captive by a woman and is being forced to beg. Our volunteers were able to rescue that girl and bring her to the Blind Welfare Society home for girls. We cared for her and educated her. Today that girl is a senior government official”, says Asha Bhola, President, Blind Welfare Society (BWS) as she recalls how her organisation has been able to transform lives.BWS has been a ray of hope for 40 such blind girls, many of whom have been abandoned by their families owing to their visual impairment. Sadly, the care, shelter and education for blind girls come at a cost, and BWS is unable to keep its work going. According to the nonprofit office bearer, “Many parents neglect their blind daughters and at times even sell them off for begging, etc. Even if the girl is from a well-to-do family, they feel providing education and care to a blind girl is a waste of money”. “What is the fault of an innocent child?”, she asks.Education, the only hope “These girls have no future without education. If they don’t receive education, they will remain uncared for. They will continue to be ignored by not just their families but even by society at large. Whatever I am today is only because of the education I received. But sadly, every blind girl is not as fortunate. “The major problem in society today is the stigma against mentally ill or mentally disabled people. Families feed and care for men who are mentally ill and keep them at home. But no one wants to help women with mental illnesses,” says N Vanitha Rengaraj, chairperson of Sharanalayam.Sharanalaym’s ‘Jothi’ is a sanctuary for over 100 women facing mental challenges. Many women were rehabilitated by the NGO, thanks to its facilities.Sharanalayam needs urgent support to take care of over 100 women. In the recent past, we have seen a lot more parents coming forward to talk about their children with neurodevelopmental disabilities and wanting to receive help in tier-2,3 cities. Although awareness is improving, the lack of well-trained professionals is hindering the process of providing quality support to these individuals. The capacity building program - Samarthya aims to further empower the trainers and caregivers to identify and train these individuals and provide a source of livelihood for them. 
 We aim to set up a unit of trained professionals who will in-turn train teachers and parents to cater to the needs of neurodiverse individuals. The team will work towards creating content, train, monitor the progress and also provide continued support. Apart from direct training programs, we also aim to provide them with digital learning aids in the form of videos, documents, and processes to help them train better. (10-12 schools in Rural Karnataka to begin with) 
 1 Year: Continue the capacity building training with the organizations with whom we have already started the training programs with. We want to gather feedback and enhance the training content.3 Years: Expand the program to at least 10-15 tier2,3 cities/districts in Karnataka and possibly other parts of South India. We also want to further enable the educators who get trained during this program to create their own mini-groups and expand the training5 Years: Set up district level help and knowledge transfer centers specifically for neurodevelopmental disabilities which can act as a first point of contact for any query/assistance and training.

SAMARTHYA - A Capacity building initiative

Ishanya follows a strength based model that fosters agency, workplace competencies and skills in people with ND, thus making them independent, empowered along with opening up more opportunities for the community. Through our programs we aim to create persistent, empowered and self advocate individuals who strive to achieve an inclusive society.There are 2.68 cr individuals with different forms of disabilities in India(Census, 2011) out of which, a workforce of over 4.7 million individuals with neurodevelopmental disabilities are not even contributing to the economy, leading to an overall 7% loss to India’s GDP. To ensure that the country runs on its full potential, it is essential to make the workforce more inclusive. We have built a series of programs over the years to create a pipeline of candidates for the inclusive workforce. However, we have realized the importance of having a dedicated transition program that focuses exclusively on building the employability skills in Persons with Neurodiversity(PwND). It equips them to face the challenges of a work environment, identifies the vocations that suit them &amp; trains them to acquire the required skill set.  
 Employability training aims to make the individual employable. This primarily includes building the right skills and attitude to get employed, managing the work environment and growing in the job.Employability training is a process which will enable candidates to become employable by increasing their awareness about the various job roles, identifying their interests/abilities &amp; areas of improvement, set goals for their career, find and practice solutions to overcome disability and help them attain the right attitude and skills required and work towards developing them further. This training program is also in tune with the Government of India’s ‘Skill India’ initiative &amp; it works towards the overall development of candidates which empower them to find jobs on their own or collaboratively and become a self advocate.

<ul><li>According to India's census, there are 26.8 million persons with impairments, both intellectual and physical. Disability has long been stigmatised by society, and differently-abled people have yet to be fully integrated into mainstream society in many nations throughout the world. India still lags behind in a big way when it comes to removing infrastructural, institutional and attitudinal barriers for persons with disabilities. With such a large population of people living with impairments, they are more likely to face difficult socio-economic circumstances - such as poorer health access, lower education achievements, difficulty in solving problems on their own, less social and economic participation and less rates of income than others.</li><li>People with disabilities have a difficult time finding fulfilling work. They find it difficult to work independently because they are reliant on family members for simple jobs. In underdeveloped countries, education for people with disabilities, particularly for children with disabilities, is scarce at best.</li><li>PWDs can now easily enter businesses and entrepreneurship - thanks to the internet revolution. According to studies, people with disabilities have reduced absenteeism, turnover, and misconduct rates. At work, they have been reported to be more productive and engaged. Unleashing the potential of this vast segment of the global population will have a significant impact on national progress</li></ul> 
 <ul><li>The Spruha program began in 2018 with the goal to provide a firm foundation of skills upon which the student can further build and generalize their understanding. The skill development transition program addresses all phases of the learning process and grows in complexity with time. The program is arranged in such a way that each student can develop at their own pace in a facilitated environment.</li><li>The objective of the Spruha program is to empower students and facilitate their successful transition to life after school. The program aims to provide skill development as part of their individualized plan and to provide them with real-world, hands-on training to improve future opportunities.</li></ul> 
 <ul><li>SPRUHA began in 2018 as a skill development transition program to equip individuals with special needs/PwDs with the skills required to become independent, employable &amp; an integral part of the community. The core skill areas include cognition, communication, social behavior, personality development, computers &amp; functional life skills. The vocations include data entry, teaching assistance, graphic designing, web designing, photo editing, office admin and video editing.</li><li>Today we have 20+ individuals enrolled in the program who are embarking on this journey towards inclusion &amp; independence. Every day, they move one step closer/forward to employability by learning new skills in the areas of cognition, communication, computers, functional life skills &amp; social behaviour. They are working for an opportunity where they can contribute &amp; be an important part of society. They are getting trained in different vocations like digital empowerment, graphic designing, office assistant, website designing, video editing, teaching assistant etc.</li><li>Our 12 candidates have got an opportunity to work in a multinational media consultancy and 7 candidates are in pipeline to join a multinational bank.</li></ul>
